Horses.. re-living my youth a bit

I am not sure if this a homesteading topic or not but here goes anyway..... :)
As a girl I loved to ride and train horses. I paid part of my way thru college working on the university's horse farm. I have always had the dream of working draft type horses and I have owned a Haflinger mare for several years. I have only harnessed her up a few times in the last 5 years and then only to pull a buggy around a bit. She has raised some fine colts for me-- most of whom I sold.
I have milestone birthday coming up later this week and I have decided that I am not getting any younger. As a gift to myself, I am booking a space in a draft horse farming workshop for later in the fall.
Today, I got busy and got out and worked on halter breaking one of our long yearlings. I have two that need to be worked--- badly. I have "had " to put it off several times until they are just about grown. Boy, did it feel good to be back in the round pen!! We both broke a sweat and I can't do it the way that I used to ( too fat and out of shape!) but I think that I am older and wiser. I tried some new techniques that were easier on both me and the colt. After about an hour or so, I could handle him all over, pick up his front feet and he was giving to pressure and reluctantly leading. I feel sure that by tomorrow, he will lead easily.
I have just let life get me sidetracked and other things pull me away from the farm and just as important--- lost some of my dreams. My teenage daughter asked me if I would get our old mare's feet fixed so that we could ride together. My hubby came out and leaned on the fence and asked me why I didn't do this more often..... he could see how happy it made me.

Hi Dorema,

I understand completely! :) Just got back from a nice evening drive with my good 'ol Standardbred gelding. Has been hot all day and we left just as it started to cool off. I swear, after about 200 ft. down the road behind one of the horses, I can "feel" all the cares of the day just slough off and drop behind us on the road. By the time we got back the cradle rock of the cart and the sound of hoofbeats had both of us almost asleep.

Glad you had a gooooood horsey day!:)

Dorema, I have never been around horses, but I can "feel" your relaxation and pleasure in getting back into something you love.

Good for you!!!!!

I've had horses, and like them (Haflingers are beautiful!), but what you describe is the way I feel about my goats! I didn't have any for several years due to other committments, and when I decided it was time to get some again, we went to visit a breeder; it was such a good feeling to just be in her barn with the goats that I decided I wasn't going to be without them again -- at least not for very long. DD and I have been taking our current herd for morning walks, before it gets too hot out (with the excuse of conditioning all of us for some goatpacking trips), and it is such a pleasure to be out with them. It makes the whole day go better.

Kathleen,

I have a herd of goats, too. Quite frankly, I have too many goats! They are part of why I have had to put so many other things on hold.
I have dramatically cut back on my herd and still have 10 milkers and about 20 doe kids...... :shkr:

Good for you!!! I started taking horseback riding lessons a couple of years ago (I am on a hiatus right now but miss it terribly!) I understand what you are saying!
I just LOVE being with them- feels very "natural" to be around them. Oneday I would LOVE to have a horse- maybe oneday-

Just wanted to say that it made me smile just reading your post! Please keep us updated about your horse!

* Gawd, I love Horses ! Haven't ridden in a few yrs. dur to my shoulder troubles, Anywho, went to best friends eldest daughters graduation/ going into Navy party, saturday. She has 3 horses , so a bunch of us walked down to pasture to see 'em. They came running to us like a bunch of puppies... Of course we had carrots and gave each about 10 or so each, they thoroughy enjoyed the carrots, but when their owner, my bestest, came down, (Half-lit on wine coolers) she had chocolate cake with gobs of fluffy white frosting, Well that knucklehead gave her own horse a big bite of cake and frosting, and I know, I know, :worth: but imagine if you will, MR. ED, doing the lip thing and snortin' and snufflin' and dancing around like a circus clown ! Poor horsie, did this for over 10 minutes, while we all were ROTFLOAO ! I been with horses all my life and NEVER seen a reaction like that. Dang, it was good cake too, but a couple more carrots , tamed them flailing lips, in no time ! Wish to H#ll, I had my camera or vid cam! What a hoot !
