Four died when a semi struck a Saturn Outlook during a traffic stop on I-77 South in Ashland County. This dash cam video from the Ohio Highway Patrol captured the collision.

Warning: the footage depicts a violent traffic crash.

ASHLAND — “Pull off the road, pull off the road,” an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper urges the driver of a Saturn Outlook on Interstate 71 just south of Ashland.

The driver, who was being pulled over for speeding, had slowed to a stop in the far right lane of the highway. Flashing red and blue lights and the patrol car’s headlights illuminate the scene.

“Go onto the shoulder, the right shoulder,” the trooper continues over his loudspeaker.

Within seconds, just as the SUV begins to move, a semitrailer slams into the vehicle from behind, pushing it further down and off the right side of the highway through a grassy area and into a treeline.

The trooper calls for emergency medical help while the semi and the Saturn are still in motion. The semi lands on top of the Saturn.

The horrific Wednesday night scene was captured on video by the trooper’s dash camera. The footage was later released by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

Of the Saturn’s seven occupants, four died at the scene, the patrol said. The three others were transported by helicopter and EMS to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Names had not been released as of Friday afternoon. However, Sgt. Ray Santiago, the patrol’s Northeast Ohio public information officer, had said the group was from out of state. He said some of the passengers were under age 18, and that the seven travelers were not all from one family, though there were family members aboard.

The truck driver, Charles C. Hunt, 54, of Van Buren, Indiana, was treated at Ashland Samaritan Hospital.

The crash remained under investigation and no charges had been filed as of Friday.

I give up.
OMG. Well, a truck driver commenter says it's the truck driver's fault. I'm not so sure he could have stopped or moved that fast. Holy Cripe, that's a bad one.

Why did they stop IN the lane? Why didn't the trucker move over or at least TRY to stop? Both parties at fault here. This happened a week ago and they still haven't released the identities of the car's occupants.

Need to see the truckers's log. He may never have seen tbe situation.
Get fatigued enough and your brain shuts down for from several seconds to some minutes and you don't even know it.
They demonstrated the effect to experienced drivers with video an EEG. Brain waves go flat for 15 seconds and horrific things go up on the "windshield" and the driver never sees them.

As Night Driver said, and demonstrated by the video, that trucker didn't see a thing. So you likely have a negligent trucker and a car driver who was illegally parked in a roadway. Sad any way you look at it. Lives changed forever.

Both drivers at fault. Speeding at night, possibly a minor driving or at the very least someone that didn't have the driving experience they needed otherwise they would have pulled over instead of stopping in the right hand lane. Why they never even headed the cop telling them to pull over doesn't make sense either unless they were trying to change drivers to avoid even more problems.

Trucker not paying attention to the lights ahead of him, possibly speeding as well. I could tell if he tried to break before or after impact.

Tragic but multiple people at fault.

The trucker was probably watching the flashing cruiser lights, and completely missed the car in his lane. In NY, the law is you need to move as far left as possible if you see flashing police or emergency lights... this guy didn't do that. But good Lord! Who stops IN A DRIVING LANE on a 4 lane highway when stopped by the cops, especially with a clear paved shoulder to the right? Kind of wonder if the driver was impaired...

Gotta get those speeders. No matter the cost. Now the state patrol won’t get to collect a $200 fine. I can’t figure out why the Saturn didn’t pull to the berm, or even into the grass. I’ve driven that damn highway a bunch. Speeding and tailgating are a regular thing. The state patrol should probably stick to protecting the governor from Covid. Oh...wait. Sorry...but a speeding fine isn’t worth ruining four lives.

From the YouTube comments:
"We know the family. They are Burmese people visiting Ohio. My parent said they got scared and confused. Their English was no good too. It was not the officer fault. Bad luck "

Another one:
"I am a Truck Driver, so trust me this Truck Driver is definitely WRONG. First off, when you see Emergency lights in that fire lane, YOU GET OVER! This guy FAILED to get over. The closest car near him was a full five seconds behind him. Then if you notice, HE NEVER EVEN HIT HIS BRAKES! This whole thing could have been avoided. I watch other Truckers do this stupid shit all the time (mainly to other stopped truckers)."

Part of what I meant by By far enough fault to go around on that one. (#11)

C'mon now....

Did I just seriously read some comments/inferences that the cop shares some blame for this?

The Burmese driver stops in the lane, not on the shoulder...
The trucker fails to get in the far lane and then fails to use brakes at all...
The policeman is on the loudspeaker telling the driver to pull the car over onto the shoulder....

And some of you pinheads want to blame the cop? Are you all from Minneapolis? Maybe Portland?

Well....if the cop hadn't pulled them over, this probably would not have happened. [/SARCASM]

I have seen multiple instances of idiots in functional vehicles stopped *ON* 2+ lane interstates. The one that nearly got us in an acccident was a driver BACKING UP ON THE INTERSTATE to take the exit he missed.

Lotsa people are an extra special version of dumb.

Remember the old driver scare film "Signal 30"?

This looks like a 21st century update to the film. Would NOT want to see that SUV after the semi ran over it. Eww.

All factors in the equation are part of the outcome.

Yes, but not all factors carry equal responsibility. In fact, in this case we have clear negligence/error on the part of both the trucker and the Burmese driver.

The rational behavior of the policeman has no ethical bearing on the outcome. You might as well blame God for allowing nightfall on the planet since that too was a factor in the equation.

Ethics 101.
This is a slam dunk.
Do not even infer that the cop bears a shred of responsibility for what happened here.

Well, you just knew that was going to happen. Cops are always at fault, in the minds of some people.

I think one of those pinheads you refer to may have been in Plainfield, IN the other night. 100mph...

No English? How did they get a driver's license if they couldn't pass the driving test? I'm sorry, I'm not being cruel, but I see a lot of this crap in Florida from illegals, snowbirds, and tourists. If you don't speak the language then you should not be driving because you won't understand the signs and signals. Sad especially with kids involved.

The driver of the car had poor English skills, coupled with a lack of knowledge of the American rules of the road. He/she should not have been driving. The truck driver must have been asleep or using his/her phone. They should not have been driving either. Therefore, I can only deduce that it was the fault of Donald Trump. Orange man bad.

In Ohio, a driver who is a resident of another country and who is a bona fide tourist visiting the United States may drive up to one year with their own national license plates (registration tags) on their vehicle and with their own driver’s license. When US citizens visit foreign countries, they too may drive under the same conditions.(Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws)

These reciprocal privileges are made possible by the United Nations International Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva 1949). A list of the countries who have reciprocity under this U.N. Convention can be found here. Note that although China is not listed as a participant, the Republic of China did sign the Treaty in 1969 and does have reciprocity with the United States. (See Participant List, Note 3).

everyone can argue all they want about whose fault it was

there was no reason to STOP on the freeway
That's the point too. The car was in park. Didn't anyone catch the flash of the reverse lights? To someone driving along at night being dazzled by flashing lights, it would appear that the car was moving, no brake lights.

Cops are always at fault, in the minds of some people.

And cops are always blameless in the minds of statists.

If they read the U.S. driving manual, it states, "White lane markingsSolid white lines are used to mark both edges of two-way roads and the right edge of one-way roads. You should not drive to the right of the edge line."

If they took that literally and applied it to ALL situations, they might have thought they were prohibited from crossing the solid white line. :shr:

UPDATE:

ASHLAND — The Ohio Highway Patrol has released the names of the four people who died and those who were injured when a semitrailer slammed into an SUV on Interstate 71 south of the city. The July 29 crash, which was recorded by a state trooper’s dashboard camera, remains under investigation, the agency said Thursday.

Dead are: Ah RA Hin, 46, and Ma Mya Kahing, 50, both of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Be AH Cha, 41, and Onaiza Doa Be, 17, both from Houston.

The four — seated in the rear passenger compartment of a white 2009 Saturn Outlook — were among seven in the vehicle that was pulled over for speeding around 11:30 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.

The driver, 21-year-old Lukear Aisha of Houston, stopped the vehicle in the far right lane.

The trooper used his loudspeaker to instruct the driver to pull completely off the highway moments before the semi, driven by Charles C. Hunt, 54 of Van Buren, Indiana, struck the SUV from behind, pushing it off the roadway and into a treeline, according to the patrol.

The collision is being blamed on the semi driver’s failure to move around the stopped vehicle, the agency said.

Hunt was transported to UH Samaritan Medical Center with minor injuries. As of Thursday no charges had been filed.

Aisha was released after treatment from Cleveland Clinic Akron General hospital.

Two others in the Saturn were taken to area hospitals.

Be Lar Kate, 17, of Fort Wayne, was a front passenger and was treated and released from OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

Nadte Kahing, 13, also of Fort Wayne, was a rear passenger and was being treated at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Sad all the way around!

I’ll not venture who’s to blame...I just don’t know everything...

I do know that in 15 years of emergency work, a lot of things come into play...

Often, the strobe lights are the biggest distraction...any trooper will tell you (or at least they used to) the lights are like a magnet!

Also, I’ve been in a fair number of foreign countries...and while I have driven in some of them, we’ve also hired locals to drive or had a local friend driving...too many differences in customs and laws...
