Homeland Security to release harmless gas in NYC subway system for bioterrorism drill

Don't hold your breath, it’s only a test.

The Department of Homeland Security will release “harmless particle materials” in the city’s subway system next week.

The “non-toxic, safe gas material” will be released at subway stations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens in order to understand where hazardous material would travel in the event of a biological terrorist attack.

NYPD INVESTIGATED THREE TERROR PLOTS LINKED TO ISIS

“This is important information to help local authorities to enhance their emergency preparedness,” DHS Program Manager Dr. Donald Bansleben said Friday.

Officials said there is currently no credible threat against either New York City or the subway system.

That sounds strange. There are so many factors that could vary, including density of agent used, where the containers would be located, temperature, etc. that I can't see how this could give any good data in "how it would travel."

harmless particle materials ARE NOT A GAS.

There should be an environmental impact statement filed on this, if any of you NYers want to see what they are actually dosing you with.

They used to do this sort of dispersion experiment on Ft. Bragg, I used to get the statements in the post library and keep them on file as required.

Likely some sort of supposedly inert bacterium, the inertness is the question.

Yeah, that alone is "problematic". There was a "to do" a few years back involving old barracks/base housing at Camp Parks in the East Bay Area that had been used in radiological tests that were found to still be "hot" in the late 1990s.

Way too many thing of this sort were done "en mass" during the Cold War and during the Second World War as well involving troops and civilians.

Why are they doing this in the NYC subway system???? Seems a little too large for a "test".

I got to participate in one of these "harmless particle material" releases at the Pentagon in 2009. DOD released it at the east entrance and the front parking lots at the Pentagon. They exposed it to us, swabbed us in the ears, nose, hands arms exposed skin AND swabbed the men's and womens costume jewlery we were asked to wear. We were then bussed up up the hill to a decon site at the navy annex and deconned with water (roughest decon I've ever been through, water pressures were too high!) and swabbed again. The radio program refers to the agent released as "garden powder"-the actual agent was I believe Bacillus globigii .

When you really look at all of this, the only real difference between CBRN "defensive" research and "offensive" research is intent regarding the use of the results.
