hole in my preps.....barber advice for guys?

Hi...worst case scenario and all shops are closed...and we don't know any hairdressers to beg or barter with....

....I have a hub and four boys age 17-24 that all go to barbers and look good with "normal" haircuts.

We own nothing but nail scizzors and regular scizzors. I guess we should get some barber tools, but I wouldn't even know how to start cutting their hair (and they all love me, and I don't want them to hate me  ).

Any advice? Thanks.

I bought some electric clippers so I could cut my hair myself, it is not perfect but it is cheap and after doing it for a few years it is better than many a hair cut I paid someone else to do.

My most recent set of clippers came from the animal section of the store since they were cheaper than the human labeled ones.

I also have a beard trimmer that runs on AA batteries, but it is not made for thick hair and it does not hold up as well as the electric clippers.

If you start watching how the hair gets cut it is pretty simple. For summer time I have been known to just buzz it really short, generally sides shorter than back and the top may be a bit longer than what I used on the back.

Right now I am simply buzzing the sides and back down and I have hair on top long enough to comb this way and that way. As this hair gets longer I simply trim it to length after taking a shower so that the hair is wet and easier to comb and get cut straight.

I suspect you could start saving some money if you started doing simple hair cuts for the kids yourself, run some searches on this site to read other posts with some stories about giving family members hair cuts. In a few instances getting the hubby to trust them made for a funny post.

Now some folks want a special hair cut that is a pain to do and they are most likely better off letting a pro do that.

I only pay for a hair cut when I am doing something that requires me to get my sports coat and slacks out, and generally that is just so I know that above the ears and back are evened up properly.

Let it grow!

I cut hubby's hair but it is curly and easy to cut. I use sissors. I also use electric clippers for the hair on his neck. Of course, if there is no electricity, one can't use the clippers.

My son has very short hair and uses a barber. He would just have to accept a change in style and let it grow longer.

My brother has straight longish hair and cuts his own. He is a real thrifty guy. You really can't tell that he does the cutting.

Note:

As I was writing this, Hubby just found some hand operated clippers on eBay! Now that is a great prep item. One of you should grab it up! :)

I have cut my sons and my DH's hair over the years with just regular scissors. It is easy and you can adjust the length of their hair to suit them. Watch the way a beautician cuts hair with scissors and you will get the idea quickly.

lynnie, you can get one of the Oster hair clipper sets with all the different blade guard sizes for about $10 - $20 on ebay. They even include an instructional DVD to get you started.

So you want to cut your hair after the SHTF? Here's the easiest and simplest way to do it . I've done it quite a lot of times. Get a regular hair comb, preferably one with looong teeth...and a razor blade. Hold the razor blade against the side of the comb and just comb your hair as you normally would. Just remember...the closer the blade is to the edge of the comb's teeth; the shorter your hair will be. Slide the blade up towards the back of the comb and the cut will be longer. Oh, and try to maintain about a 15 to 20 degree angle between the comb and the part of the head you're working on.

And a tip for sharpening the razor blade...if it is a double-edged blade. Just hold it to the inside of a glass drinking glass with your pointing finger and rub it back and forth a few times.

Ok, there ya go! Enjoy!

Or worst case scenario you may want buzz cuts or shaved. Save on stored water as far as keeping it clean. No barbers, may mean no running water either. Wipe it with a damp sponge rather than shampooing.

Are those e-bay things non electric? If it is electric, it is not a prep.

caplock, that sounds good. I'll let them do it themselves!

Thanks all.

I've cut my own hair since '95. I let it grow out in the winter for warmth and buzz it short in the summer. In a pinch, a good sharp knife will shear hair just fine. If you can find one of the old scissor type hair cutters that would work too. If your husband and sons are still vain after the shit hits the fan, I'd use a big wooden mallet and a straight razor on them. Vanity is for those who can afford it. Not for the folks just trying to live from day to day. Hair styles shouldn't be a priority for preppers. It just doesn't make sense.

If you have regular scissors, you are set. Perhaps a "FloBee" if power isnt out.

There is also a trimmer out there that looks like a comb, but cuts the hair by brushing it. You can set the length on it. I dont know how it works, but the infomertial looks promising (don't they always until you buy it)

Go "Mad Max" guys. The girls will like it as long as you can keep it clean and bug free. (Which of course is the problem.)

We got this Remington buzz cutter at China Mart. It works really well, but not on batteries. It has a built in vacuum, so there's no mess. Almost as good as a Flo-bee!

Ex-hairdresser here who is married to another ex-hairdresser.........heh.......if you live in our area, haircuts here.....ha ha ha....

Ok, you can get a decent pair of hair cutting scissors from beauty supply stores....please do so......they last longer and won't pull as much as regular scissors......as to cutting mens hair....start at the bottom on the nape of the neck. you can either round it or cut straight across the bottom and then kinda rounded up towards the ears......ok, you have that part done..now for the easy part...you will need a good styling comb, not to be confused with a barbers comb.....there is a difference......if you want the hair to be short at the bottom then take the comb and comb out and away from the scalp to the length you want.....hold it and then in a snipping motion cut from the bottom up.....holding the comb steady...you want the comb to be up and down, not horizontal....you will get lines horizontally.....do this from the nape of the head up to just above the ear line.....start to tip the top part of the comb farther out away from the scalp...say about 2 or 4 inches depending on long your son, hubby, ect likes to wear his hair...do this all around the back of the head, starting on the bottom and working you way up a little bit at a time. Do not try to rush the job and take too much hair....bad lines this way......when all the hair is cut uniformly on the back you move to the sides........to clip around the ears just pull the ear down and follow the hair line in front of and up around the ear and down to the back...you dont really need the scissors for this, just snip slowly and don't cut his ear.....ok, now for the sideburns and the rest of the sides.....you will do it like the back but you have a shorter distance to the top so the bottom couple inches is short then you angle your comb out away again to make it longer towards the top....do the whole side this way then go to the other side and repeat......
Now to the top......stand in front and comb down, most guys like it a little longer in the front......make a sort of bang about an inch or two above the eyebrows....this gives you a length to judge the rest of the hair on top by......stand at the side now and pull the front hair up with the comb....you will then use your first two fingers to hold the hair between.....very slowly and carefully trim the hair to the same length as the front hair is.....you won't be able to do the whole top of the head at once but work from the front to the back....when you get to the back pull the shorter hair up and trim the top to match the back...... front hair like this / sorta and the back hair like this \ but not as steep an angle.....once you get the whole top the same length you can go to the back and bring the side hair up and make the top on the sides match the shorter hair on the sides using your two fingers as a guide.........
piece of cake....read this thru a few times then go sit outside a barber shop and watch for a few mins.......you will get it in a flash.....print this out and take it with you so you can make notes.........

I will probably now be banned forever from going back into the hairdressers business.......heh heh......

Oh, when you go buy those scissors? Pick up a cheap cloth cutting cape.....your hubby will thank you forever........heh.....

Beards and mustaches they can do themselves with the battery powered trimmers which also work great for trimming their neck and ear hair with........

One more thing........You're welcome..........and women.......you can do this.....it is very easy......very very easy.....the more you do it the better you get at it......just remember to keep you cutting even.....either use your fingers to hold the hair or the comb to cut against.....and watch you don't cut yourself....I have many wounds from working too fast and nipping myself.......(grumbles about ex-bosses who scheduled too many cuts in an hours time.....grrrrr)

Those clippers are worthless.........save your money....buy some scissors....this is from someone who had a pair......pure waste of money.......your hand will get sore from squeezing them first and they will get dull after about two hair cuts.......

Wise owl, I'm surprised at you. Who gives a shit about hair styles if you can't buy gas or eat a decent meal? I mean really. This place cracks me up.

Max, I look at it this way....for every ten or twenty bucks a person saves by not going to the hairstylist or barber they can use that in the cars gas tank now.......and it is good for the self to look decent even if you are staying at home or out on guard duty.......everyone needs a haircut sooner or later.......if you can do it yourself even better........learn now and it takes only a few mins to do it.
Look at the money people can save by not driving to the barbershop.......now.......

Just took four inches off the gray wolf's head today.....he decided he was ready for his summer cut having let it grow all winter........I actually kinda liked the pony tail......he looked a lot like Benjamin Martin in the Patriot, lol......

Oh, and what I told them to do is not a fancy cut.....just a basic short hair cut for guys....like someone said, less shampoo is needed or water to wash it for that matter..........

My (adult) son remarked one day....I'm tired of always going to the barber and it's costing me waaay too much...to which I replied, half jokingly....shave it off...so he did! looks good too, suits him, so shaved it stays :)
Definately wash 'n' wear

EEEWWWWWWW!!!!!! timbo.......keep that nasty stuff to your self.......yuk....

note to self.......make sure we have lots of shampoo or good bar soap for cleaning bodies and hair with........maybe gallons would be a good thing.....something you can also get at a good beauty supply store......and they do sell to the public...

I use an old Barber King haircutter: it's basically what Caplock was describing (razor blade held beside comb). Adjustable settings, razorcut hairdo. Cuts your own hair shortish to very short, though you'll need scissors for the face, neck, and ears.

Mine (maybe 20 years old, possibly purchased from the Vermont Country Store www.vermontcountrystore.com) calls itself Spanel Barber King. It came with 3 special size razor blades. I'm still using the first one (maybe I'm not picky).

A Google search yielded mixed results. Spanel doesn't seem to be in business. Found listings on Ebay, Amazon, etc. Someone on a message board said it was no longer being made. This place seems to sell them new, however: http://www.amerimark.com/cgi-bin/am...m_detail.html?keywords=&srcmode=&sortbyprice=

Actually, that's not quite like mine; mine has a circular dial between handle and blade, to adjust the blade. This seems to have a control in that location that slides to right or left with the blade thingie.

They are electric. I thought you guys had a generator. You do need some light oil for them from time to time. But perhaps simple scissors are fine, or a battery operated clipper that is mainly for beards and such.

You might want to check out the Seiko "Clean Cut" battery operated shaver. It does ALL areas well. ;)
