Ex-hairdresser here who is married to another ex-hairdresser.........heh.......if you live in our area, haircuts here.....ha ha ha....
Ok, you can get a decent pair of hair cutting scissors from beauty supply stores....please do so......they last longer and won't pull as much as regular scissors......as to cutting mens hair....start at the bottom on the nape of the neck. you can either round it or cut straight across the bottom and then kinda rounded up towards the ears......ok, you have that part done..now for the easy part...you will need a good styling comb, not to be confused with a barbers comb.....there is a difference......if you want the hair to be short at the bottom then take the comb and comb out and away from the scalp to the length you want.....hold it and then in a snipping motion cut from the bottom up.....holding the comb steady...you want the comb to be up and down, not horizontal....you will get lines horizontally.....do this from the nape of the head up to just above the ear line.....start to tip the top part of the comb farther out away from the scalp...say about 2 or 4 inches depending on long your son, hubby, ect likes to wear his hair...do this all around the back of the head, starting on the bottom and working you way up a little bit at a time. Do not try to rush the job and take too much hair....bad lines this way......when all the hair is cut uniformly on the back you move to the sides........to clip around the ears just pull the ear down and follow the hair line in front of and up around the ear and down to the back...you dont really need the scissors for this, just snip slowly and don't cut his ear.....ok, now for the sideburns and the rest of the sides.....you will do it like the back but you have a shorter distance to the top so the bottom couple inches is short then you angle your comb out away again to make it longer towards the top....do the whole side this way then go to the other side and repeat......
Now to the top......stand in front and comb down, most guys like it a little longer in the front......make a sort of bang about an inch or two above the eyebrows....this gives you a length to judge the rest of the hair on top by......stand at the side now and pull the front hair up with the comb....you will then use your first two fingers to hold the hair between.....very slowly and carefully trim the hair to the same length as the front hair is.....you won't be able to do the whole top of the head at once but work from the front to the back....when you get to the back pull the shorter hair up and trim the top to match the back...... front hair like this / sorta and the back hair like this \ but not as steep an angle.....once you get the whole top the same length you can go to the back and bring the side hair up and make the top on the sides match the shorter hair on the sides using your two fingers as a guide.........
piece of cake....read this thru a few times then go sit outside a barber shop and watch for a few mins.......you will get it in a flash.....print this out and take it with you so you can make notes.........
I will probably now be banned forever from going back into the hairdressers business.......heh heh......
Oh, when you go buy those scissors? Pick up a cheap cloth cutting cape.....your hubby will thank you forever........heh.....
Beards and mustaches they can do themselves with the battery powered trimmers which also work great for trimming their neck and ear hair with........
One more thing........You're welcome..........and women.......you can do this.....it is very easy......very very easy.....the more you do it the better you get at it......just remember to keep you cutting even.....either use your fingers to hold the hair or the comb to cut against.....and watch you don't cut yourself....I have many wounds from working too fast and nipping myself.......(grumbles about ex-bosses who scheduled too many cuts in an hours time.....grrrrr)
