Acute Hemorrhagic Fever Syndrome - Sudan

----------------------------------------

ProMED-mail has learned from a usually reliable source that a single suspected case of acute hemorrhagic fever has been reported from an area in Southern Sudan close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The symptoms included: severe headache, fever, and bleeding from nose, eyes, and mouth. There are no gastrointestinal symptoms. No similar cases have been reported in the area.

[The symptoms are compatible with diagnoses of Crimean-Congo
hemorrhagic fever, yellow fever, Rift Valley fever, or Ebola
hemorrhagic fever. The location for epidemiological reasons favours a diagnosis of Ebola hemorrhagic fever or Rift Valley fever. Further information is awaited. - Mods.JW/MHJ/CP]

ProMED-mail has heard from a usually reliable source that there have been 31 confirmed cases (18 deaths) in Mbomo District. Since the last update (20 Feb 2002), 11 new cases have been detected, 9 at one location and 2 at another.

15 suspected (but not yet confirmed) cases of Ebola hemorrhagic
fever, including 12 deaths, have been reported in in 3 remote
villages approximately 65 km from Kelle. The International Team (MoH, WHO, MSF and ICRC) is investigating.

[This report suggests that the Ebola hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Gabon and Republic of Congo is now more extensive on the Republic of Congo side of the border. The total number of confirmed cases in this outbreak would appear now to be 81, with 62 deaths (or 96 cases and 74 deaths if the additional suspected cases in Congo Republic are included). - Mod.CP]
