When I was growing up in Chicago, we had a fire in our apt building on the South Side. The basement apt. refrigerator shorted out and the wires caught fire and spread upward. Our apt only had smoke damage but I remember my father throwing my Christmas gifts out the window to my aunt who lived a block over. I also remember my father standing by our brand new first tv warning the firemen to be careful. The apt next to us had more damage and the firemen cut holes in the floor to get to the wiring. I was about 4 or 5 and it was Christmas Eve.

When we were moving from Chicago to Oklahoma City in 1953, my mother and I were staying in a hotel as my father had gone ahead a few weeks before. That evening, we heard the firemen coming up to our floor and the hall had tons of smoke in. I it. I remember my mother soaking the towels in water and putting them up against the door. I was staying by the window. Turns out, the man in the room fell asleep smoking and the couch caught on fire. I don't know if he survived or not but I've had enough fires!! First couple of floors for me now in any building!!

On The Level
Has any cause of the fire been determined? Did someone die suddenly while cooking bacon? Maybe an electric bike or skateboard battery ignited?
