Herbal Herbal Thyroid Meds vs Synthroid

I like the idea of using herbal thyroid supplements over a prescribed remedy like synthroid, for the mere fact of being more in control and not totally dependent on health care professionals. My question is, do herbals work as well as prescriptions and are they affordable? This is all new to me and I need to get on something pretty quick. Sure would like to hear others experiences. TIA

Natural remedies work differently than prescription medications. I think that it depends on the diagnosis whether or not natural remedies will work for you. Dh was diagnosed with hypothyroid. We are opposed to any unnecessary drugs and always look for a natural solution. We did not like the "forever" aspect of synthroid and the idea that it turns off the natural function of the thyroid. DH began taking kelp and within a few months he was no longer hypothyroid.

Thank you Spinner. I feel exactly the same way and this gives me hope. I'm going to give natural remedies a chance. Was it just kelp and how many times a day did he take it? Did your DH go on a strict diet while doing this?

My blood test shows that I'm hypothyroid, but all of my symptoms are hyperthyroid. If there is a way out of this I'll take it. Thank you.

Sorry to butt in, do you have a link for a safe source of kelp? Perhaps, kelp that didn't come from the Pacific?

Rabbit,
If I remember right it was just kelp. Knowing DH it was probably once a day, but check the bottle for recommendations. I will ask DH the details. We are vegetarians and at the time DH was nearly vegan. We always eat a very healthy diet and have eaten this way for all of our adult lives - and we are old. We eat organic as much as possible and grow as much of our food as we can. Whole grains, vegetables and fruit, beans, DH does not eat dairy as it does not agree with him.

DH is very thin, very sensitive to cold, and yet his test shows hypothyroid. Also, the numbers for hypothyroid/hyperthyroid have changed in recent years. At the risk of sounding paranoid (I do NOT trust drug companies!) I wonder if they changed to increase sales of Synthroid et al? It seems that everyone is being diagnosed with a thyroid issue.

Babs, we bought it at our local health food store. Sorry I can't do better than that for you. If you talk to the people at a health food store they can probably help you find that information.

Thanks, I'll do that. I have trouble trusting labels these days.

Have you ever considered Lugol's iodine? There is a guy, Dr. David Brownstein, that has some pretty compelling information out there pertaining to the body's need for iodine and various health issues. I think his main book is "Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It.". Or something like that. If I recall, there are some full length videos on his site that are very informative. Website is drbrownstein.com

Ok, asked DH about it and he took Nature's Way kelp, 400 Mcg Iodine, once a day. He tried another brand with magnesium and it upset his stomach so he switched to this one.

There is no source on the bottle. DH was laughing and said it probably came from the coast off of Fukushima and the radiation is what helped his thyroid ;)

One would think that the kelp itself would mitigate the effects of any radiation in the kelp, but I am no scientist, so I have no idea.
