HEALTH Help! Need your tricks to calm vomiting...

My hubby and I took a nice little trip to Orlando two weeks ago to escape the polar vortex. Not my first choice, but I had a work conference there anyway. He’s still out of town on business, but I have a nasty virus. Didn’t matter how much we washed our hands and used hand sanitizer. I still caught something. By the incubation period and symptoms, my best guess is that it’s some kind of enterovirus. It started off as cold symptoms: runny/stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, canker sores all over my tongue. Now it’s progressed to my stomach. I have been violently vomiting all night, and I can’t seem to calm my stomach down. I tried peppermint essential oil, ginger tea, and neither worked. The nausea comes on so swiftly that I don’t even have time to move. I just grab a bowl and prepare for the projectile vomiting. I can feel myself getting dehydrated, but I can’t keep water down. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Have you tried ice chips? Are you drinking or just taking a sip? Sips are better. One sip, wait a few minutes, then another. Do you have ginger ale (with real ginger)? Peppermint tea might be easier on your stomach than the oil. I don't know as I've never taken peppermint oil. Pressure points on the wrists? You can buy wrist bands that gently put pressure on the pressure points for pregnant ladies and those sick after surgery. You can google it. Better yet, I'll post what I can find. Let us know how you are doing?

Acupressure for Nausea and Vomiting

This information explains how to use acupressure to reduce nausea and vomiting.

Acupressure is an ancient healing art that’s based on the traditional Chinese medicine practice of acupuncture. With acupressure, pressure is applied to specific places on your body. These places are called acupoints. Pressing these points can help release muscle tension and promote blood circulation. Research suggests that it can also relieve many common side effects of chemotherapy.

You can do acupressure at home by using your fingers to apply pressure to different acupoints. Watch this video or follow the steps below to learn how to perform acupressure to reduce nausea and vomiting.

VIDEO
Pressure Point P-6 (Neiguan)
Pressure point P-6, also called Neiguan, is located on your inner arm near your wrist. Doing acupressure on this point can help relieve nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy.

Position your hand so that your fingers are pointing up and your palm is facing you.
To find pressure point P-6, place the first 3 fingers of your opposite hand across your wrist (see Figure 1). Then, place your thumb on the inside of your wrist just below your index finger (see Figure 2). You should be able to feel 2 large tendons (tissue that connects muscles to bones) under your thumb. This is pressure point P-6.
Figure 1. Placing 3 fingers across wrist
Figure 1. Placing 3 fingers across wrist

Figure 2. Placing thumb on point below index finger
Figure 2. Placing thumb on point below index finger

Use your thumb or forefinger to press on this point for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a circular motion. Be firm, but don’t press so hard that it hurts.
Repeat the process on your other wrist.

Have you got gatorade or some type of sports drink?

Thank you so much! I’ll watch the video and try it. I’m only taking small sips. No ice chips, and no Gatorade here. I live several miles from town and am kind of stranded in the ice encrusted tundra we now find ourselves in. I put a drop of peppermint under my tongue and rubbed a few drops on my belly, to no avail. I can try making some more tea... I have lots of that. But I’m a little apprehensive of trying that again. It just didn’t sit well. I’ll try the pressure points not. Thanks again...

No popsicles... I don’t have anything like that. I have elderberry syrup as well as kombucha. But both of those scare me, too!

Saltine crackers? Best of luck to you. I hope to see you back in the morning feeling better. Oh, and if you can pinch the skin on your hand and it sticks and doesn't recover (go back down) you need to go to the ER as you are severely dehydrated. Actually, you can call your ER and a nurse may be able to give you some real medical advice, not just home remedies.

Ginger in any form. Ginger ale ginger tea.

So I started feeling that familiar rise in nausea, knowing what was coming. And I nearly started crying, because I’m so spent and have nothing left in my stomach. Desperate, I remembered suddenly I bought a bunch of fresh ginger root for a Thai soup I was going to make this weekend. I hurried to peel a slice about the size of a water chestnut, and began sucking on it. It wasn’t especially pleasant, because ginger is spicy. But it worked! My stomach relaxed a little. It doesn’t feel great, but I managed to keep things under control this time around. Funny, I had some ginger digestive tea that I made earlier, and it didn’t work. Not one bit. Probably wasn’t enough. Here’s hoping I can relax enough to sleep. Thank you all for your help. I’ll update in the morning.

My Oral Rehydration formula, for dehydration from most any reason.

ORS
6 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon Lite salt (50/50 sodium/potassium chloride)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda (not baking powder)
1 quart water
The sugar is a necessary component, do not remove/reduce it.
This gives more of the necessary electrolytes than just sodium chloride (salt) and sugar.
You can flavor it with unsweetened koolaid, just enough to make it palatable.

Thank you for this! I will make some in the morning. I don’t have light salt, but I do have pink Himalayan salt. That will have to do.

Sorry.

Have you tried smelling a bit of alcohol on a tissue or cloth?

Even a packet of the eyeglass cleaners works for me. A bottle of Spirits of Camphor is nice to keep handy. My dear Mother just asked her pharmacy to order her a bottle. They didn't know what it was until she described it. Of course, that won't help you now. It really helps soothe the waves of nausea. Put a small amount on a washcloth and hold under your nose.

Florida is notorious for the "nasties" due to all of the tourist from across the globe.

I have never been as sick on a yearly basis as when I was working in St. Petersburg's only super regional shopping center that saw an average of 10 million visitors a year. I swear I came down with both SARS and the Asian flu... Damn near died... Was coughing and puking so hard I ripped muscles in my back and in my stomach and the symptoms still didn't stop. I was near passing out from the pain every time I had to cough or puke... Easily one of the top 3 worst experiences in my life.

There is only one 100% tried and true remedy for nausea and I am sure you don't want to use it...

joints_shutterstock-52960849.jpg

I was throwing up non-stop once... 4 hours straight and once my stomach was empty, the dry heaves continued. A trip to the bathroom every 10-15 minutes at 0300 hours ( until 0700 hours ) when my room mate at the time convinced me to take a couple tokes. I was hard-core anti-drug at the time ( just fresh out of the military ) and did not want to do it but I was desperate... two puffs and I was sleeping like a baby. It sold me on the medicinal value on the spot.

Decades later I met my wife who experience extreme nausea during her monthly visits from "Aunt Flo"... A couple of puffs stopped her symptoms immediately.

You just can't convince me, after being so dead set and believing all the "reefer madness" hype, that marijuana has no benefits. I have both seen it and experienced it...

Had a similar situation when I was having an allergic reaction to a medication. The medicine was out of my system, but the vomiting continued about 3 to 4 times an hour for about 4 hours. Like you, I was totally exhausted and was considering going to the ER>>>>>which I just DON'T do!!

The only thing we had was Pepto Bismol……..I drank about 1/3 of the bottle. The vomiting stopped immediately. My poop was tarry black the next day, but oh well, I didn't die from vomiting! Poop was normal after 2 or 3 days so no worries!

Activated charcoal works for us when we have problems like this. As I understand it works by absorbing the toxins from the bug that cause the vomiting.

Prayers for you.

If you don't keep hydrated, you're going to be in big trouble - like hospitalized. Get some fresh ginger root, peel it and chew on it. Crackers is another good choice for vomiting. Eat some jello. Cannabis as a last resort.

I just woke up... managed to sleep for about 5 hours straight! I did actually do a small shot of Pepto Bismol this morning, as it now appears that my bug is moving “down” my intestines, and now I’m running for the toilet for a different reason. I’ve managed to take a few sips of water and it stayed down. But oh, the cough! Somehow it settled deep in my chest last night while I slept. It now sounds like bronchitis. Unreal. I haven’t been sick except one time in the last ten years. This one is a doozy.

I always keep ginger ale on hand and it works for me on those rare occasions I've been sick to my stomach.

Jubilee you poor thing! I can't even imagine non-stop vomiting. Lifting you up and praying this works its way out of you FAST!

What works for me (most times) is ICE COLD 7-up. Chills the stomach lining and calms the vomit reflex, at least for me. But it has to be just above freezing temperature to work.

Something you might consider:

It helps greatly with an upset stomach, and diarrhea, but don't know about throwing up. BUT seems the throwing up, might start due to an upset stomach. Don't know, so just shooting in the dark here as a suggestion.

Pure Blackberry Juice. Could start with a big tablespoon, and it's Unsweetened.

It won't hurt to take more, but just saying as a starting point.

ESFP adrift in INTJ sea
"COMBID" which is Compazine....though it has to come from a doc and pharmacy. Comes as both tabs and suppositories.

Benadryl won't hurt either as the anticholinergic effects WILL slow your stomach muscles down.

I have not tried this, but juice from canned peaches is supposed to work. Take a tablespoon every 15 minutes for an hour. If you throw up, start the count over. Several people said it works. I hope you are better soon.

Thanks! It’s been so long since I’ve been sick. Only one other time in the last ten years. We went to Disney World. It’s a cesspool. No amount of hand washing and sanitizing kept those germs away.

Like CaryC said. Plain unsweetened blackberry juice will stop vomiting and diarrhea dead in it's tracks. It's been used here many times. I keep frozen blackberries in my freezer just for this purpose.

This actually sounds really good. My mother always gave us 7-Up and saltines when we were sick with a stomach bug growing up. It will bring back memories for sure.

I didn’t know this!!! Thank you so much. What a cool trick. I don’t have any blackberries, and I'm sure our little small town grocer won’t have any blackberries or blackberry juice. But I pick them wild in the summer, and will be sure to save some just for this very reason when I’m preserving them this year.

Interesting. I’m still feeling a bit queasy, so I’m going to try a few of these tips. Thanks!

Yes doctor told me to take Benedryl for nausea. I use charcoal most of the time. Some people say to take Sambucol if exposed to it. I hope you feel better. I hate that stuff.

Yes, we grow our own for making jelly, cobblers, and for this purpose.

For me, blackberry juice from canned blackberries or flat ginger ale.

If that fails, compazine or zofran.

I once had a migraine so bad I starting vomiting and could not stop. My husband took me to the ER and his brother was on duty. He started giving me injections of whatever meds they used at the time -- I was so sick I don't really remember. Still kept vomiting and still kept getting injections. My BIL finally said "I have never given anyone this much medication." They even did a fast-scan CT of my head to see if I had any sort of brain tumor. They decided to admit me. By then, the medications may have started working and I slept it off and went home the next afternoon. I hate migraines.

If you don't improve, you really need to go to the ER one way or the other. If you cannot get someone to take you, you may need to go by ambulance.

I had an english bulldog that developed parvo, I had not money for a vet. He was projectile vomiting and diarrhea. I called a naturapth vet in Sandy Oregon and he told m to go dig up some black berry roots, wash, cut them in small pieces, boil it for 30 minutes or so to produce color. Cool, give a teaspoon at a time to stop the vomiting and a small enema of the cooled stuff to stop the diarrhea. It worked, one application and the dog never had another problem.

My son would catch stomach virus often and we could not stop the vomiting with anything. An ER nurse in Dallas told me to make some strong black tea, sweeten it to taste, let cool and give 1 teaspoon at a time every 3 to 5 minutes to stop vomiting. It works so well, my son is almost 50 today and he still keeps it in the fridge.

I advise once you have the first symptoms of a stomach bug to drink a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.

Try cup of water with a teaspoon or 2 of apple cider vinegar. Stir. Take a teaspoon of it every 10-15 minutes. If you need to sweeten it, add a liitle honey. Seems to work wonders every time we use it. I hope you recover soon!

So sorry you're ill. You took precautions, but if you were in an airplane or any enclosed space with other people (public transportation, elevator, etc.), you could inhale virus. I haven't had stomach flu for almost 20 years because I have little contact with other humans in tight spaces.

Glad to see the remedies other people have to offer. You never know when you'll need something.

This won't help you now cause you can't get to town but coke (cola) syrup will stop both ends from running. My mother used it on us when we were kids and I have used this on my wife. Needs to be made from pure cane sugar not corn syrup. The phosphoric acid soothes the stomach.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Personally, I would let the diarrhea continue. It will get the virus OUT of your body. Just make sure you stay hydrated. Add some lime SHERBERT to the ice cold 7-up when you feel a bit better. That's what my mom always gave us for nausea.

Now, for a truly bad case of the pukes>>>>try eating sauerkraut. Works like a charm! Will settle your stomach in seconds!

Be careful>>>>>if you are having a bronchial cough and you weren't before vomiting, you may have aspirated on some of the vomit. THAT can be tragic. My dad did that and had a collapsed lung and a lung abscess because of it!!
