So my son and I have to make a week trip to El Paso for work.

Any advice on the area from people who know the area would be greatly appreciated.

What areas to avoid? (I know just avoid the entire place all together ha ha)

We have to do some video and photo work for a company and will be on the boarder (ETA: border) working with a well seasoned boarder patrol officer.

Any suggestions on a decent place to stay? Holiday Inn is always our place of choice and almost always ends up being a decent place. I am a picky B!+$# when it comes to rooms haha. I have walked out of more than one place and I will pay extra for a good place to stay. I see a couple Holiday Inns there. Are either in a bad location?

Any advice on what places to avoid?

Also we do a lot of content creation for various companies and we do a bit of overland type gear content. Any good places close by that have awesome views where we can produce video and photos? I am guessing anything close to there is crawling with illegals That's right, I said it, ILLEGALS!!!!

Haven't been back there since 1972 driving back from Salt Lake City to Houston. We spent the night at a motel in town, left the Uhaul there, and drove in the family car across the border into Juarez to eat at a restaurant for some reason. My parents had me drive as usual. People were parking their cars in the middle of dark streets. At least no one was shooting the place up back then.

No way would I cross there in my car today. One lose bullet rolling around under the seat, and you do 10 years in a Mexican prison. If you accidentally get detoured off the highway to the international Bridge, and have guns and ammo in the car, stop and back up against traffic.

I moved from El Paso in 2019 after living there for years.
It's 90% Hispanic and basically a suburb of Juarez across the Rio Grande in Mexico. At times, there are situations where service personnel can't speak English, like the time a taxi driver we used couldn't understand our directions. The people in our experience, however, were warm and friendly but we were seeing hints of contempt from younger people, like the time a young waiter at IHOP served everybody in his section but us. We were the only whites, by the way. (Ya' think that was the reason?)

It's not a sanctuary city. (Yeah, sure. Wink, wink.) On the one hand, the Catholic church is extremely sympathetic and accommodating to these poor, "undocumented workers." On the other hand, the business community sees the recent flood of illegals as a real drain on resources and an obstacle to the long-term plan to make the city more attractive to not only business but also tourists. So the mayor walks a fine line between the two, busing illegals out as fast as possible but with "compassion."

Meanwhile, we all know that the Drug Cartel controls the border and "keeps the peace." it's actually a very safe city. If there's crime, it's usually in the northeast section, north of Fort Bliss. Recommend staying on the West side. And at Exit 11 off I 10, there are a coupla' hotels on the corner of Mesa and Bartlett Drive, across the street from Walmart and with a bunch of restaurants nearby.

One restaurant that has an outstanding reputation is *Lucys* at Executive and Mesa on the West side. Also, recommend Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino in Sunland Park, New Mexico. Mesilla, New Mexico, about 40 minutes away, has an Old Town with a coupla' exceptional restaurants, shops, and an "old west/Mexican" feel.

But the one thing that's truly unique in all the world is White Sands National Monument about 90 minutes away. And within three/ four hours driving distance are Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, (unique Hot Springs) and Carlsbad Caverns.

The weather? No need to check. It's always sunny and windy or windy and sunny. March is a windy season, by the way.

Have fun.

If you are running around close to the border, get body armour and carry a weapon the narcos are animals
and Do Not Carry ANY WEAPON into Mexico, Mexican jails and prisons are hell on Earth. 10 years sentences for gringos w/ guns are common

Second Aunt Pittypat's input. West side is (or was) residential and relatively stable. If your job takes you to other parts of the city area, check with the locals and start with the personnel at your motel. They will know and give good advice. (There are other ways to get from "here" to "there" and they can help.)

Not sure where you are from, but if you are able to and choose to carry in Texas, the rules can be a bit confusing to those from outside of Texas.

The biggest thing to know is there is:
1) Licensed Conceal Carry [Referred to as 30.06]
2) Licensed Open Carry [Referred to as 30.07]
3) Constitutional (Un-Licensed) Open & Concealed Carry [Referred to as 30.05]

The rules for where you can go and what types of signs can keep you out are are different depending on which one you are carrying under.

Not in regards to just El Paso but the best western and LQ are going south in a large way.
From pampa to junction, not the same quality anymore.
“ Guadalupe Peak “is a heck of a hike.
Cool monument at the top.
A book to sign in an ammo can too.
I know a fair number of folks that couldn’t complete it.
It’s not for the faint of heart!

30.05 they don’t allow open carry in that establishment does not apply to CHL
30.06 they despise constutional rights no licensed carry alowed in that eatablishment
30.07 No open carry period Does not apply to CHL
more details here https://www.walkertaylorlaw.com/texas-no-gun-sign-laws/

and you can and should check DPS site

edit to add CHL Concealed Handgun License operative term CONCEALED
TX actually issues a License to carry Handgun
according to the one I have
duh everyone I know calls it a CHL
