those of you that are out of country please respond.

in the US, the prices are just stupid.

I wondered if the rest of the world endures the same?

Im in the US, but i got my Phonak from Costco. 1499.00 Best hearing aid i have heard about. Answer all my phone calls through the hearing aids. I get my text and email alerts through them too. You can blue tooth to your smart tv as well. There are warranties and if you loose them they will replace for a one time loss. You can control them with your smart phone too. Every other place is 4-8 thousand that wont do what mine will do.

Please be aware that a law was passed about 5 years ago allowing "over the counter" hearing aids. They are not allowed to be called hearing aids, but rather "hearing amplifiers".

I use a "RIC" device from Otofonix.
I use the "Elite" and Encore" units. Very EASY to learn how to us them.

Their customer service is superb. You may return them after 30 days for ANY reason.

I prefer using a unit that uses batteries because it takes 6 hours to re-charge them and if you forget to throw them on the charger you are screwed for work that morning, lol. And if you travel, it is one LESS charger to pack.

Otofonix has improved my quality of life. (I have no ties to Otofonix, lol)

mine were about $3800 ---my insurance paid $2500--they were mid range price wise
I had to finally break down and get them when people started wearing the freakin masks
Without the masks I could understand about 70% (according the the tests) and usually made up the difference by reading lips
the masks stopped that

I need some, needed them for a few years now, they'll be free for life, batteries too. Don't forget to pay your taxes please. Thanks.

Are hearing amplifiers different than hearing aids? Range of freq adjustment?

Yes, there are differences. I did testing with my ENT. My Otofonix helped immensely. Not perfect, but gave me back my life for a price I could afford. I no longer heard my turn signals, and had the radio volume cranked up to level 14 in my car.
Now I hear the signals and use level 8 or 9 on the radio.

One weird thing I do notice is my device is aware of motion detectors in a room, lol!

I know exactly what you are talking about.

I consider the masks as discrimination against the hard of hearing who are forced to learn and utilize lip reading with what hearing they have to be able to compete in society.

The masks knock the legs out from under such people who depend on lip reading to be able to work.

It's bad enough that hearing loss cripples your earning capacity but the masks really go to town on your ability to function in a world where everybody takes hearing for granted.

Bad hearing is a tragic condition that affects all parts of your life. Others expect you to somehow get to their level of hearing. If they would directly talk to you and try to communicate many persons would be able to talk to you.
Communication is more than mumbling something looking the other way and expect you to hear it.
I was fortunate to have cochlear implants about 20 years ago. Now on my 3 generation and can carry on a conversation on a cafe.
If you can this is a remarkable solution.

VA has freeing aides if you were near loud "noises" in the service.
I found the quality just wasn't there with the hearing aids they gave me. Good service from the techs, but just not the best hearing aids.

Interesting report, thanks. I need to go in and get rechecked and fitted, my left ear is getting really bad, right one is getting bad and I can't hear half the voices that speak at me, the masking thing has been a killer. How many times can you say 'what?' in one conversation before the other party wants to smack you.

It is so frustrating to talk to my mom. She is practically deaf.

Her $4500 hearing aids do not fit well so she ends up not wearing them.

If I get to that level of deafness I will text people and let them text me.

I thought maybe an amplifier would work better for her, at least cost and fit wise but then she totally disrespects my conservative views somy thoughts on this probably do not matter.

I had no idea until after my Mother passed away how much she paid for her hearing aids. Miracle Ear sold them to her and she paid $7,000.!!!! I can't believe how they are ripping off old people. If she would have just asked me I could have helped her find some much cheaper. She made a lot of bad decisions without asking though.

I might add that Costco hearing aids are tuned to your needs after a hearing test.

All supposed hearing aids are basically just "boom boxes" which actually further deteriorates your hearing from excessive sounds blasted in the ear.
Would advise those to not continually wear them, just when actually needed.

If you actually want to communicate with her....

Please read post #15 above for an answer from your mom.

Not sure they would do this for someone that is 93

My hearing aids sound like I am hearing something spoken in a tin can. They said, "Well, you just have to get used to them." I know what poor sound is like.

I wear behind the ear. Have worn Sams Club, Costco. Cosco very cost effective. I am now wearing one that comes direct to me, you do self testing and then make your own frequency adjustments using app.

Probably not.
Programing hearing "aids" has made good strides in the last years, progressing from just amplifiers to changing the output to the ear to something one can recognize.
Music is still a disaster.

Best wishes to you and your mom.
Life is short at 93.
OMG.

My hearing issues have more to do with voices not being clear. I had a hearing test once and "passed" because I hear sounds but clarifying language becomes an issue if there are alot of other sounds around. I jumped off a high dive several years ago and burst both ear drums when I hit the water and they healed with kind of a fold I was told. Anyone else have this issue and would the over the counter hearing aids help with that?

I have worn hearing aids for over 10 years. There are several good brands but most important is finding a good audiologist that can adjust them to you specific hearing loss. You can have the best aides but if not adjusted right they will be no better than that $100 amplifier.

Costco will adjust your hearing aides over and over for free. Hearing tests are free. They even put an app on my iPhone so I can adjust my hearing aides. When my phone rings I hear it in my hearing aides. The phone conversation is broadcast into my hearing aides and I just use the iPhone for a microphone. A BIG improvement for me.

That is true. Way back when I was in grade school (3rd grade maybe?) my mother was told that I needed aids in both ears by hearing aid dealer. But in the end, she decided to just use one in my worst ear and save my good ear for later in life.

I'm gad she did that, now my worst ear is severely profound loss of hearing but with lip reading and without an aid in my best ear, I can somewhat still communicate as long as there's no bleeping mask to get in the way... Of course can't do sideways and behind communication...

Also very interesting is the amount of "communication" through visual means other than lip reading. I'll bet you also are aware of raised eyebrows, squinting eyes, body position in expressing ideas or moods. We can tell if a person is angry, asking a question, or even bored by visual signs. I have found myself watching movies with no sound and getting enough to follow the action.

Thanks for your reply, your mom did you good.
