Preparations for Pesach are all ready under way.

As we go into Passover I thought I would be able to finish a comprehensive look at some of the Ten Plagues. I was not able to finish but as you go through the Haggadah here is the section that I did on hail. This looks at the weather phenomena of hail from the Exodus to Revelation to geo-engineering.

More coming putting it in context, it is almost done but needs a day or two for editing and Passover is today. Too much to do, to little time.

Here is a portion of it, it is pretty long which is why I am not posting the whole article:

Hail to the Chief!

As we go into Passover I thought I would be able to finish a comprehensive look at some of the Ten Plagues. I was not able to finish but as you go through the Haggadah here is the section that I did on hail. More coming, it is almost done but needs a day or two for editing.

Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? Job 38:22-23

At the time of Creation many things were including the rainbow and storehouses of hail. Providential hail is listed four times in Scripture, as one of the Ten Plagues, at the time Children of Israel lead by Joshua were conquering the Land of Israel against the five Emorite kings, at time of the end during the Gog and Magog war, and in Revelation.

Ancient man associated the Hebrew name of hail with the dappled horses found in Zechariah 6, a time of judgment.

When Moses raised up his hand to cease the plague of hail it is said in tradition that the hailstones that had not yet fallen remained in the great celestial storehouses and the hail which was in process of raining down were suspended mid-air reserved in the celestial storehouses for the times of Joshua, Gog & Magog, and Revelation.

As impossible as this sounds the question was once asked by a Samaritan, “Is it really conceivable that the upper waters could be suspended simply by God’s Word?”

To which a response was given. Try this simple experiment! “Bring me a water-clock container that has holes in it on the bottom and a finger sized hole on the top. Fill it with water and seal the top hole with your finger, and you will find that the water will not fall out of the bottom holes; but when you remove your finger, the waters will spurt out of all the bottom holes. If my finger stays the water, though I am but flesh and blood, how much more so the finger of God. Hence the upper waters are suspended by God’s Word”. R’ Meir, Midrash Rabbah
What is hail?

In Psalm 148 the Psalmist recalls a number of destructive earthly phenomena for which God apparently deserves all the praise. Though all items mentioned in this verse can be beneficial they often occur in destructive forms, fire, hail, and snow.

Although these forces appear to be haphazardly, the Psalmist assures us that nothing is left to change. Even these forces are completely under the tight control of God. God purposefully designed them to appear uncontrollable in order to frighten the people. Ancient texts state, “God created the terrifying crash of the thunderbolts in order to humble men and straighten out the flaws in their hearts, in fulfillment of Ecclesiastes 3:14.”

Hail is caused around a nuclei. At temperatures warmer than -40 degrees Celsius, ice nuclei formation (sublimation) is NOT spontaneous. How then do snowflakes and other types of precipitation form in the mid- and lower-troposphere? The answer is pre-existing ice nuclei called “ice nucleators” such as of meteorites, dust, metal, or other biological particulates. Water attaches itself to the nuclei and begin as grauple which is about 1/5th of an inch is size. Hailstones are concentrations of layers of translucent and transparent ice with layers of white, granular ice known as rime, which are formed when the hail stone is carried up and down in within alternating warm and cold air currents, known in meteorology as updrafts. Each hail stone melts a little during each descent and acquires a new sheath during each ascent. And is formed much like the process of a precious pearl. Sometimes small hail can be liquid water with a frozen outer shell. Historically hail from dust, soot and ash needed a temperature of about -41 Celsius to form but according to Christner whose research was published in Science, February 29, 2008 biological ice can catalyze in the much warmer troposphere region of the firmament. He estimates, “100 of these particles per liter are of biological origin.”

Hail stones are ejected from a chimney-effect updraft into a descending current or when an updraft weakens. Hailstones get their opaque look from tiny air bubbles caught in the hail formation process.

A hail shaft is a storm cell which produces hail over a large area up to 200 miles, and moves at a speed of about 35 mph. One such storm in 1968 dropped 82 million cubic feet of ice.

There is an interesting phenomena associated with hail. Forested areas affect our climate. Winter temperatures and be as much as 9 degrees higher in a forest than in clear areas. Summer temperatures may be as much as five degrees cooler in the forest. Insurance companies are aware of this and offer insurance against deluges of hail that are rare in forested areas.

Death by Hail

Is it so surprising to us that in the future as the days of evil draw to an end that man would be pummeled by giant hailstones? In the Holy Scriptures the corporal punishment of stoning was instructed for those engaging in necromancy (wizardry), cursing God, and idolatry and many other transgressions we see in modern headlines. Imagine super-sized hail coming down upon the earth at the speed of light.

To date the largest hailstone is recorded from Coffeyville, Kansas weighing in at over 1.67 pounds with a circumference of 17.5 inches. Stories of hail killing large numbers of people and animals are found globally and spanning centuries. But imagine the hail that will be coming our way in the day preceding Messiah? Ancient accounts predict that the size of this Providential hail, reserved in the upper firmament for that day, will range from the weight of an infants head to a maximum of 90-100 pounds per hailstone experienced around the world!

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates normal hail causes $1 billion annually in damages to property and agriculture so you can well imagine the devastation inflicted by these Providential hailstones!

At least here is some food for thought!
