Gunshots fired in burglary of store at Bellagio in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police say they are investigating a burglary at a high-end retail store inside the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.

Police said in a statement Saturday that a preliminary investigation suggests that at least three people entered the store and one of them fired gunshots. No one was injured and a suspect was taken into custody.

Authorities say initial reports indicated there was an active shooter but that proved to be false. Parts of the casino property are closed as police investigate.

Las Vegas police are investigating a jewelry store robbery inside the Bellagio hotel-casino complex that sent frightened guests fleeing as the suspects smashed glass windows with sledgehammers.

One witness posted to Twitter a picture of a person wearing what appeared to be a pig mask and peering around a corner while standing beneath a Rolex sign. The witness, Twitter user Kir_Kamil, said the person in the pig mask tried to flee but was arrested.

The incident happened shortly before 3 a.m. local time, and witnesses told police the men smashed the store's windows to get inside, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

Las Vegas police confirmed a robbery occurred, saying three people were involved and one was taken into custody. Police did not specify in which store the incident occurred. The Bellagio is home to several high-end jewelry and watch stores, including Tiffany, Tesorini, Omega and Harry Winston.

“It is believed at least one suspect fired shots inside the store," the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. “Initial reports indicated there was an active shooter, however that proved to be false.”

Police said three suspects fled the robbery into the nearby parking garage and tried to escape in a vehicle. When it wouldn't start, they tried to carjack someone else's car, and then tried to run away, the Sun reported.

The Bellagio is home to an iconic water fountain show set to music that draws thousands of visitors an hour, especially during the heat of the day as shoppers browse the marble-floored shopping gallery.

Of all the places to conduct an armed robbery, a Las Vegas casino has got probably more state of the art digital CCTV coverage per square foot of any place else on Earth, including locations in London and DC. Adding to that, the watches in question these guys were after are all serial numbered up the wazoo.

Yup. The serial numbers are tracked like car VIN numbers. No one would ever be able to have the watches serviced, or sell them on the legitimate market.
