Ground Hornets

Hi All,

What is a good way to kill ground hornets, three attempts with no success. I used hornet spray killer, oil, and gasoline. The hive is so big the ground is sinking. Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Ed

I used Vegetable Plus from my local farm and feed supply with great success. Hornets had made themselves a home in my raised garden beds and I couldn't go near it without getting four or five stings. Now I love to work in my beds!

If these hornets (yellow jackets?) have a nest actually in the ground what I have done is to shove a gopher bomb in the entrance hole and cover it with dirt. The next day you can dig up the nest.

Gopher bombs are just long cylindrical smoke-bombs that you can usually find at feed and seed stores, farm supplys, garden shops and so on.

Make a note of the exact location of the entrance hole. Go out in the cool of the evening when the insects are their least active, light the bomb, shove it completely down the hole, then shovel dirt over the top. Vacate the area until the next day.

I suppose really large nests may take several, but one would probably do it if there's not a lot of different entrances.

Pour a 5-gallon bucket of hot soapy water down the hole. Any good dish washing liquid soap will do. About a quarter to half a cup to 5 gallons will work. Pour it in as fast as it will go and not come running back out. Once you start pouring don't stop until it's all gone except for about half a gallon. Mix enough dirt into the remaining water to form a nice thick, sloppy mess and pour that into the hole for a cap. Then shovel dirt over the entrance hole. It's cheap, non-toxic and will get rid of your problem. If that doesn't work, nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. :D

Max, I laughed a good long and hard minute when I read that.

But, if all else fails that 'might' work. Remember, it failed in the movies, so it just might fail here also.

It has been said that a brand new bic cigarette lighter has the explosive power of a stick of dynamite. Use about a minutes worth of your cannon fuse. Tape it to the side of the bic lighter, light the fuse, and shove it down the entrance hole to the nest...and run like heck! That should take care of your nest of bees.

Yeah, Bert Gummer I ain't, but he ain't got much on me. My 'rec. room' might not be as extensively apportioned as his, but I'm still prepared.
