Top GOP candidates support 'open carry' in Texas

Abbott says, if elected governor, he'll push to change that law!

AUSTIN – Republican candidates for governor and lieutenant governor want to allow licensed Texans to openly carry pistols in public, an idea that has failed for years to gain momentum in the state's gun-friendly legislature.

Papacub,

GOP in Texas - hope they can get a Republican in for governor. CO has Obama's buddy, Hickenlooper...wish we could recall him.

I'm interested in what the other states are doing so appreciate this info.

I keep saying that if Texas cuts loose from the Union, I'm moving to Texas (use to live in Waco and Galveston).

Now a handful of people in Texas need to vet this guy carefully and see just what kind of back ground he has and if he has a law degree chances are once in office he will sell you out in an instant

The open carry law in Alabama has been vague for decades. Our Gov Robert Bentley signed a law this year clarifying that Alabama is an open carry state. Yea!

Greg Abbott is a straight shooter and a sharp cookie... he's been well-vetted. West Virginia, OTOH has Rockefeller and Manchin. Publius, you take care of your state and let us down here in Texas worry about The Republic of Texas.

There is NO REASON to open-carry in the city. And I'm sure it's allowed when hunting or camping however. Even if open-carry were legal, I'd never be so foolish as to engage in it.

I agree.

There are a few good reasons to do so. But I feel that the negative far outweigh the positive.

My biggest concern is stirring up the public. So far, I’ve only seen one 30-06 sign. It was in Dallas (and it wasn’t a legal posting so I ignored it). As of now I haven’t seen a single sign in my AO. People don’t know and don’t think about it. They see a ‘gun buster’ sign and feel all warm and fuzzy. As soon as Susie soccer mom sees an exposed gun she will piss her pants, start shrieking to the manager of the store and a sign will appear. CCW is rather worthless when every place in town is posted.

And save me the tired old cliché about threatening the store with taking your business elsewhere. They won’t give a tinker’s damn. They are smart enough to know that about 2% of the Texas population have CHL’s. Of that about half carry on a regular basis. If you think that they are going to cater to 1% at the expense of the other 99% you are delusional.

I agree that there's really no reason to OC in an urban/suburban setting. However, if your not on your own property (even in the boondocks) you can't legally carry in Texas. You can chalk that up to the Carpetbaggers having an understandably uncomfortable attitude about all the veterans from the War of Northern Aggression wandering about armed.

I'd like to see OC passed simply so you could wear a sidearm when hunting, hiking or camping.

Um, no. I have a CHL and I can legally carry (concealed) pretty much anywhere I want. Yes, in Texas.

Chance, if Texas secedes, you won't have to come down here to be in Texas. Texas will move up there and encompass you. You see when Texas became a State in the U.S. it gave control over to the U.S. of almost twice the land it now occupies...and all of that land will *have* to revert back to the Republic of Texas when we go.

You can't 'open carry' while camping, hunting?! Wow! That means I been breaking the law all my life...and the Game Wardens never told me.

You can open carry a long gun:

Rifles, shotguns (long guns) do not have to be concealed.
But cannot be carried in a calculated way to cause alarm and do not require license.

You can openly carry a handgun on your property.
You can openly carry a handgun in the commission of a sporting activity
You can openly carry a handgun while hunting.
You can carry a handgun in your vehicle without a license but it does have to be concealed.

Another primary reason was to disarm the blacks. Whites would get a wink and a nod. Blacks would get arrested.

They went completely ape shit getting all of the anti-black laws off of the books. Funny how they ignored the carry laws in Texas.

Elza, we've come a long way...

There's Blacks here I'd trust a lot further than some whites...and one of my grandsons is one of those whites. Have you really considered the possibility of having to kill a close kin? Because of his mental make-up and his stand on things, I have. And I say to everyone, if you have not seriously considered that possibility, then you have not mentally prepped for what's coming at us.

God help us all.

Wow I sure thought Texas would have more freedom, you know the whole Dont mess with Texas thing. AZ is open carry no permit needed for concealed carry.

You know, I like the whole concept of open carry.........but, having a concealed handgun lic., I think concealed is the best way to carry.
You don't tip your hand.
Also on the "Don't Mess with Texas" anti-littering campaign, the Texas A.G. actively prosecutes those that use the term for personal gain.
And under the Motorist Protection Act, anyone (with a few exceptions) can carry concealed in your motor vehicle, or in route from house (or business) to motor vehicle, but it must be concealed.

I have indeed thought about this, Cap. As far as family I don’t have anything to worry about. Only the two boys in our AO. But there are friends and neighbors. Not as bad as the family aspect but bad enough. Will I have the strength to do what needs to be done? I hope so. OTOH God has never failed in his guidance during my 60 years. I’ll continue my faith in Him for His grace and guidance.

Wow I sure thought Texas would have more freedom, you know the whole Dont mess with Texas thing. AZ is open carry no permit needed for concealed carry.

I too, have open carried both in Arizona and in Wyoming. And carrying openly gives the possible (gang bangers)"brigands" a pause, when encountering an oldster "packing".. Especially the senior citizens who routeenly take evening walks in the surburbs of Phoenix and Tucson.

It was/ is well know by the older retired people, that they where considered "open season" for any of the gangbangers on their walks; or for that matter, just after the S.S. checks had came in.

"Easy Pickings" I have heard the gang bangers say. That is, unless the ole "dude" was a" packing"! Him or her, they soon learned to leave alone.

And open carry and yet still being forced to have a concealed carry licence - is both asinine and totally inane.
