Had to take Gracie to our vet yesterday afternoon because she swallowed a small piece of razor blade. I'll get to how that happened in a bit.
Plain films showed a right triangle shaped piece about 3/8"on the longest side in her stomach. Our own vet – who's also a good friend - wasn't overly concerned about it and assured us she'd seen worse than this pass thru without ill effects but that we'd be better off to see about possibly scoping her and removing it that way – IF that was a possibility. So we left her at Up State Veterinary Specialists in Asheville last night and just now received a call from them.
She had a good night and the internist told us the piece hadn't moved. actually that's quite GOOD news. She's not in pain and isn't bleeding; there's no fluid in the abdomen, she hasn't perforated and she hasn't vomited. current plan is to scope Gracie about 1500 this afternoon (waiting to be sure the stomach is empty) and if possible remove the offending object thru the scope. If they can't get it that way they will have to open her and remove it surgically. If she's successfully scoped she'll come home tonight. If she has to be opened they'll keep her over night for at least a day - maybe two.
so how'd it all happen? the MIL passed several weeks back. We'd taken her with us to the house to drop some documents off with the realtor. He'd been cleaning a sticker off the window with a utility knife razor blade and had put the blade on the counter top. Somehow the blade got knocked off and ended up on the floor. being the one year old puppy she still is, she picked it up and chewed it. Didn't cut her but she swallowed that one small piece. That's how we got to where we are now.
In the morning she always rolls over on her back and waits for me to get down on the floor, scratch her ears, rub her belly and hug her. After she eats we go out back, sit on the swing have a cup and plan the days work. I missed all that today. the stress of her having to go thru all this is a bitch. She also has a raging UTI which was an unknown until yesterday.

If you don't mind, have the time and are so inclined, would you please remember her in your thoughts and prayers today? best case scenario would be getting that piece out through the scope – but that may be a bit of a trick. thanks so much.
