Gov. Cuomo: Trump Administration 'Failed' to Stop Coronavirus -- In 'Denial'

1-2 minutes

Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) said the Trump administration is “in denial” about the coronavirus pandemic, which they failed to stop.

Cuomo said, “I don’t think this is the second surge. We’re worried about a second wave. I think we’re still in the first wave, and this is a continuation of the first wave, and it was a failed effort to stop the first wave in the country. As you pointed out, New York is in a totally different place.”

He continued, “Look, if you listen to what the secretary said, if you listen to what the president says, what they said at the White House briefing, they’re saying what they said three months ago. They’re basically in denial about the problem. They don’t want to tell the American people the truth.”

He added, “This is a virus. It doesn’t respond to politics. You can’t tweet at it. You have to treat it. And we never did that.”

Futhermucker!!

We were NEVER GOING TO "STOP" COVID. THE OPENLY AVOWED GOAL, AS STATED, WAS TO FLATTEN THE CURVE.
AT NO TIME were we trying to eliminate the disease. If we WERE TRYING TO STOP the disease, you garbage brained futher-mucker would have had to ACTIVATE honest QUARANTINE regulations and THAT would have meant keeping people who were positive for the disease IN THEIR HOMES for a MINIMUM of 14 days UNTIL PUBLIC HEALTH NURSES had CLEARED them.

We were ONLY EVER trying to SLOW THE SPREAD, which we appear to have done.

ANYONE SHOCKED that the numbers are rising missed that salient point. And Trump did PRECISELY WHAT he NEEDED to do. NOT OVERWHELM the known facilities.
NOW we may get closer to overwhelmed but we SHOULD be able to handle it. NEXT wave, perhaps not so much.

This from man who killed many by sending Covid positive elderly back into nursing homes to infect others. And then said it wasn't brought back in by the infected. But brought in by staff workers. The blood is on your hands Cuomo.

New Orleans Redux. We are governed by a federal system. The states hold the responsibility and authority of the "police" powers to protect the general public's health, safety and morals from harm. The federal government has a leadership function to provide knowledge/guidance and, under the National Incident Management System (NIMS,) to assist and support the states when their state and local resources are overwhelmed.

The states and local governments are responsible for developing emergency plans and stockpiles and training personnel to respond to emergencies. The federal government also maintains regional stockpiles to supplement state resources.

In this case, neither the states or the federal stockpiles were sufficiently prepared for a national epidemic of this scope and its particular requirements for ventilators. PPE has an expiration date and management failed to rotate and restock both state and federal stockpiles. In addition, manufacture of such items had been allowed to migrate to a foreign communist country and was no longer under US control.

The one issue that the federal government was particularly shortsighted was the testing fiasco. The institutional response in place anticipated small local outbreaks and not a national, widespread pandemic. This was fine for ebola, but not for COVID 19. The Trump Admin inherited this shortsighted system and, when it was obviously not working, put the Pence Task Force is place to bust the entrenched bureaucracy. (Note how the CDC rapidly faded into the background and the FDA got goosed into action.)

Hind sight is 20/20, but you have to look at actions based on what was "known/unknown" at the time. In the early phase, we didn't know if this was highly communicable between humans, what the incubation period was, whether it was airborne, etc. We still don't know a lot about this disease - is it a respiratory disease? A blood disease? How long do antibodies last? Can you get it from fomites?

I would have liked to have seen a better response on testing, but Trump is not a medical guy. It would be unreasonable to expect him to come into office and reorder the entrenched bureaucracy at that level. The people he had in there were people with Ebola experience (Redfield) and were institutional, and not out of the box thinkers. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar is an attorney, a former pharmaceutical industry lobbyist and a weak link in something like a pandemic response.

In summary, although Trump had a figurehead role and too often went into the weeds with the press, who baited him, the actual response was the states' responsibility. They were woefully unprepared and foundering badly. When it came down to it, the Pence Task Force and the military leadership there pulled irons out of the fire to support the states with resources. They don't get one iota of the credit they deserve.

It's difficult or impossible to have a war of words with people who purchase ink by the barrel.

The modern version is, it's impossible to have a war of words with people who control the flow of digital bits.
