Good source for bulk veg. oil?

I'm trying to do some comparison shopping for buying bulk vegetable oil. I believe I've found a good deal locally, but I'm trying to compare it with online vendors to see how they compare. Any suggestions?

Just be aware, some of it is from GMO sources and the price is usually reflective of that vs organic.

What type of place are you getting it from locally ??

Restaurant supply ?

I usually only get the used stuff from a local Chinese restaurant to make into bio-diesel.

The fresh oils for cooking/etc. usually go bad within 6 months unless they have a lot of preservatives.

Its from a local company that supplies restaurants.

BG,
Try adding some kero or diesel to your used cooking oil. It'll keep longer without going rancid. I don't make bio, but do use SVO.

Best regards

Preserving oils with cheap powder antioxidants from BAC

One can add his own powdered antioxidants sourced in bulk from here:
http://easycart.net/BeyondACenturyInc./

BHT by itself is supposed to be pretty good, but one could also add any number of the other fat-soluble antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein, etc.

EDIT: fixed link (thanks, Alan).

Direct link for BHT powder:
http://www.easycart.net/BeyondACenturyInc./Special_Products_A-G.html#7011

Crystalline powder. 300 grams, $7.00.

If anyone is interested in using BHT as a preservative in their edible fats I still have instructions for doing so in the food storage FAQ.

http://athagan.members.atlantic.net/PFSFAQ/PFSFAQ-3-2.html#Extending

I started to take them out the last time I updated it because I could not find any online retail sources of BHT any longer, but decided to leave them in case one came along later.

Hitssquad, I get an error from your link.

Thanks everyone for the responses, the advice on storage is certainly welcomed. I understand some of you stay away from the stuff because of health reasons. I use alot of olive oil too. But I do use veg. oil quite a bit as well. Example, I make my own corn tortillas & I like to fry them and make my own chips out of them as well. What can I say, I'm a chips & salsa junkie. If TSHTF, I'd like to still be eating my homemade chips & salsa.

It isn't oil, but I store Crisco shortening and it lasts on the shelf a very long time (I use it for tortillas also).

I don't get olive oil since the prices skyrocketed, but the stocks I still have seem to last a long while.

The veg oil I do use gets used up fairly quickly and I never have much of that in storage (I will get one large container from a restaurant supply store).

Making your own olive oil with olive-leaf extract powder

You might try making your own by using another oil as a base stock and adding olive-leaf extract powder:
http://www.easycart.net/BeyondACenturyInc./Herbals_K-O.html#8318

Olive leaf contains oleuropein (the extract linked above is standardized at 17%) which is the principal phenolic antioxidant present in olives and olive-oil.

Has anyone had luck freezing cooking oil to prevent rancidity?

I've refrigerated mine in the past, and it pops alot when used for frying.

Sunflower oil will smoke if used for frying. One of the special properties if olive oil is that it is mostly composed of fatty acid chains that are unsaturated at only one point. Sunflower oil fatty acid chains tend to be unsaturated at two points, making them less stable.

Well, turns out my deal wasn't so great afterall. The local Sam's Club had it beat by a couple of $$. But I appreciate the contributions to this thread; it has been very educational.

It takes me a long time to use up cooking oil so most of mine is in the freezer and what isn't is in the fridge except for some olive oil I store in a dark cabinet. I doubt that I could tell the difference between an unopened bottle of oil that's been in the freezer for five years and one that I just brought home from the store.

If your oil is popping it's likely because you've got condensation in it.
