COCOA, FL -- Newt Gingrich promised Wednesday on Florida’s space coast to create a moon colony by 2020 if elected president.

"By the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon. And it will be American," Gingrich told the crowd of roughly 700, taking them to their feet in applause.

The former House speaker said the current space program in the country is a "tragedy" and believes his "grandiose" ideas can help fix it.

"I am sick of being told we have to be timid and I'm sick of being told we have to be limited to technologies that are 50 years old," he said, noting that by 2020 he wants to be capable to go to Mars.

I don't like this guy.......but I sure like the idea of getting our space program back in high gear...........

That guy is so back and forth on different subjects. he scares me. I like the idea of restarting major space programs, but not being led by that guy hopefully.

On TB every waking moment
The Country needs a common vision to unite and energize it. In the past that has often been a war, but in JFKs time, it was going to the moon that inspired science and the future. Tells you something that Newt chose that vision.

Saved, to glorify God.
Anybody cheering for this is like the family of an unemployed, bankrupt, absolute dolt cheering when he announces they are going to buy the governor's mansion and live in luxury because they WANT it.

Idiots. Where do you think Mr. Gingrich will look for the money to "go to the moon?" IN YOUR POCKETS!!
And when he pulls that money OUT of your pockets HIS (US DEBT) CREDITORS WILL SAY "Moon hell, pay US what you already OWE US."

FWIW, Newt's been in favor of a large space program for a long time. That's how I first heard of him, many moons ago...

Actually, Gingrich has stated that he wants the private sector to accomplish this by offering prizes. Like we have done for SpaceX and others.

Double or Triple the size of NASA and you still couldn't do this in 8 years.....absurd

With a mere fraction of bailouts to those thieving @$%@^$!ers, we could be on the right track to curing or severely curtailing cancer, have reliable solar and thorium reactors, AND build an H3 mining operation on the moon. We developed nukes in 4 years and went to space in 9 - imagine what we could do now with current technology, dedicated people, and without regulatory crap holding us back. Instead what did we get with our trillion bucks? Poof its gone?

As preppers, we know it's dangerous to put all your eggs in one basket. Currently, the human race is all in one basket. If we had Moon colonies and colonies at L-5 built with materials mined from the moon, we'd have a better chance of survival as a species. I guess I read too much Gerard K. O'Neill in jr. high. He was a big advocate of space colonization.

Space travel should be privatized.

We would have been out there years ago, if this were so.

Another place where gov has no business.

peetar, SpaceX is a company. The prizes are called "X prizes" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_prize) and are given for a range of technological achievements.

For example, on 06/21/2004 SpaceShipOne became the first privately funded manned spacecraft in space when it reached an altitude of 62 miles. When they did it again in less than two weeks they won an "Ansari X Prize."

Speaking of SpaceX (the company), don't forget that in a few short weeks (on 02/07/2012?) they will attempt an orbital flight from Cape Canaveral. Their unmanned Dragon capsule will (hopefully) fly to the space station and dock with a load of supplies. If successful it will be the first commercial company in history to berth with the International Space Station.

I know, it's awesome! This is the way it should have been done from the start. SpaceX does get special deals through a partnership with NASA, though. I don't see anything wrong with that either. NASA let SpaceX buy some of their old equipment for pennies to help them get started. Then they got out of the way.

Remember that NASA was the agency controller, but private companies built the ships that took us to the moon, and back. A new space race would be a big economic boost, putting a lot of people back into the work force, and at good salaries.

The thing we have to insist on in something like this, is that all contractors be US companies, and that all manufacturing been done stateside. No matter what it is. That's a lot of money flowing through the US. And that will generate revenue of it's own with income taxes, sales taxes, and a renewed consumer confidence.

And, if we hold Congress to the fire about the all US manufacturing, that just might open the door for more manufacturing jobs. I'd like to see us back on the moon. At this point, we should be thinking about building our second colony on the moon, to replace the first one which would now be deteriorating.

Instead we've got an orbital outhouse where we conduct scientific experiments that really don't have any real use, since we don't actually have a space program anymore.

If we ever want to explore the rest of the solar system, it will have to be done with ships constructed in orbit. And there are plenty of raw materials available in space to use in the process.

I really like this idea. Like some others I'm not really all that enamored with Newt. But he is better than Obama, lol.

Didn't Northrup Grumman build the first moon orbiter/lander? Correction, it was only called Grumman back then. Not sure who built the Saturn V. I thought it was the govt that built it.

Could have been. I know that the government was still operating some things back then, and hadn't yet moved to a complete contractor basis like they have now ( at least for the most part ) And yeah, I think Grumman was the one who built the lunar module, anyway. Boeing and McDonnel Douglas I think were the main mfg's in the Atlas project, though the design was done in house by NASA, IIRC.

I really think this would be a wonderful boost to the nation. And I'd much rather see us united as a nation behind a moon base, than behind yet another war. I honestly can't see Iran as much of a threat to us as a nation, so long as we're vigilant. If, IF, they try to close the Strait, then that's another story.

Even then, if we devoted even a quarter of the resources we're spending on wars to funding alternate energy, like hydrogen, the Iran could close whatever they wanted, lol. If our heavy transport still needed diesel, then I think our own domestic production could provide that easy enough. And our military would have plenty of fuel available here at home as well.

But of course that makes far too much sense, lol. Even if I am the one that said it :D

Damn near everybody. Boeing, North American Aviation (later called Rockwell), Douglas Aviation and IBM.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_V

The largest production model of the Saturn family of rockets, the Saturn V was designed under the direction of Wernher von Braun and Arthur Rudolph at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, with Boeing, North American Aviation, Douglas Aircraft Company, and IBM as the lead contractors. Von Braun's design was based in part on his work on the Aggregate series of rockets, especially the A-10, A-11, and A-12, in Germany during World War II.
