GUNS/RLTD Getting Ready to buy an AR-15

A bird in the hand beats bangbang vaporware.

You can build a .300BLK AR pistol NOW while you wait for the JAKL to hit production. Ammo and magazines are the same plus you can add a 5.56 upper (10.5" or 11.5") for the same lower for caliber versatility.

And we do not know what laws/rulings/regulations will change by the time PSA gets production online. I have not waited, you can if you want.
Available now, brownell's AR180 pistol upper or the rock river PDS.

20" and much to big for CQB or jumping out of a vehicle. Better for fixed position defense or medium distance sniping.

When I go down to S.Ga to hog hunt I bring my 16 and 20 inch AR's along with me. It may be overkill but if I'm walking through the woods to a stand I'll carry the 20 inch slung along my back and the 16 inch in my hands as I've been surprised by hogs before and I like the mobility of the 16. The 20 as you've mentioned is more for longer distances from a stand.

I also bring my DPMS AR-10 for nite shoots when we are going for even longer distances.

Going back to DD original post IMO he should pick up a basic 16 inch AR-15. He can decide whats best for optics. I have uppers with fixed front site and removable carry handles, some which are completely flat tops with scopes or dots and with backup flip up sites. I've also got a couple with lights on them.

Since DD lives in a city and wants this for dealing with zombies I'd suggest he hangs a light off of the gun. If its a gun with a fixed front sight I'd recommend the Elzetta light mounts as they are good quality, not that expensive and easy to install. I have one on my house gun and one on my truck gun.

Hmm, well after sifting through all this data and some internet research, plus what is available at my gun store, I came up with the Smith and Wesson M & P 15 Sport 2 optics ready for $699 basic

For some basic optics, I have been pretty happy with a Burris Tac30 on their PEPR mount, and Vortex has a couple offerings in the 1-4 range that have served well for my little brother's 3 gun games with very generous eye relief.
For a red dot, I have been extremely happy with my Vortex SPARC AR. Good eye relief again, and takes normal AAA batteries instead of the 2032 or 357 disc type batteries.

Hmm, I got on the bus and tried to connect with NW Amory out in Tigard. No joy, but I did get a nice ride, sunshine, open fields and several homeless types doing the paw your head repeatedly, plus two wheelchair bound 400 plus pounds.
I mean this shit is 10 miles away from downtown. Anyhow, couldn't figure out the exact address despite taking the bus out to Sherwood, Oregon, which was worth the whole deal. Figuring out where the store is getting, there is harder than buying the AR-15.

The Ruger AR556 or the S &W MP15 Sport 2 are good choices, optics ready, scope or red dot, bi pod, beam light, better trigger and flash suppressor ?

No, I haven"t tried Curt's. I just bought 2 American Eagle gold ounces, so that will push things out closer to Memorial Day. I bought some 20 gauge out at Keith's Sporting goods back in March and was impressed with the customer service, plus it is a short walk from the end of the Max line. For whatever reason nearly all of the gun shops I tried are a stone bitch to get to using public ttansit, or have other issues. I decided to ramp up after the supreme court voided the Baker County judge decision. I am now looking at a Windham A-1 government AR-15 that is nearly the same one I trained on back in August 1973, at Fort Leonard Wood. Even has the solid stock with the storage compartment. Anyway, it is $1000 or so, but the quality is definitely there.

Dough whatever you chose, be sure to acquire - Ammo, spare mags, mag pouches & belt, cleaning gear. You can go with optics, but also have back up iron sights.

Also, since you are getting around via public transport, you should consider a guitar case, to transport your new toy incognito.

Good luck !!!

I have picked up, since 1976, and even some of my active duty equiptment, a web welt with suspenders, canteen, canteen cup, cover. M-16 20 round ammo pouch, butt pack, bandage holders, field jacket I wore back then, folding entrenching tool with cover, plus other stuff. Almost bought a Colt AR-15 for $200 when I got out. Oregon is getting ready to blow up. I just hope I didn't wait too long and Brown bans AR-15's via executive order.

PSA, the single most dangerous company in America for gun lovers.

In addition to the gun itself, one needs:

Optics
MBUS
At least 10-20 mags
Gun case
Cleaning supplies if not already owned
For an AR pattern rifle, you also need a selection of dental picks

I found that the “extras” generally run about $200-$400.

Oregon is getting ready to blow up.

Doug,

DO NOT fool yourself. The whole freaking country is getting ready to blow up and the fuse is lit.

Forget 20 round magazines, GI standard today is 30s. 20s are antiques. If you want to use GI web gear anything issued since the mid to late 1970s are made for 30s. And almost all are for aluminum GI mags only. Palmetto sells good ones.

DO NOT overthink this thing. Get a decent AR, any listed above will do. If your eyes need an optic for you to be effective (almost anyone is MORE effective with an optic than without one) then pick what works for you.

But do not lollygag around getting this done. Six month too early is better than six minutes too late.

...20 rd. Mags DO serve a purpose!
Whenever you're riding shotgun with an AR doing a driveby, the 20 rounders DO NOT scratch the paint, which would lead to an investigation otherwise!
You're welcome!

Apparently there is enough interest from retro AR builders and AR pistol shooters to keep up some interest in 20s. I doubt GI mag pouches will accept a full complement of most plastic magazines as they tend to be bulkier.

I keep a coupla short mags around.

10s for sitting in a gun rest, like the like the Lead Sled. 30s don't let it bed in the V.

20s for 300BO hunting rounds.

Okay, I am now the proud owner of a windham government model that I got for $900, including strap and carrying case. I brought my large 48 inch duffel bag to put the rifle in since the windham carry case didn' fit in my duffel bag and i ain't open carry an AR-15 on the Max. Good thing too since there was a crazy on my car, two rent a cops had to sit on him, and I am sitting there with my AR-15, 300 rounds ammo, 200 traoning and 40 556mm greentip on my other backpack. :kaid:
So, I have a bunch of my 70's era stuff. Including a M-16 20 round mag pouch 3 inside and I think the two outside ones were for the 40mm grenades rounfs for the under barrel launchers
The 5 20 round mags are used vietnam era army ones. I will keep posting but live rifle and shotgun firing require a special indoor range here. You can shoot handguns.

:vik:I am going retro here, the M-16 clone of my youth. Heck, the new plastic mags had dust covers on them that you had to mess with to get off. I am 66 years old and I am sick of new stuff, from cell phones to plastic ar 15 mags. Luddites of the world unite.

In case anybody is interested here is the link to the store's webpage that contains the info on the Windham Government Issue AR -15 I bought today. With the exception of full automatic fire ability it is one damn fine rifle. Take a look at the barrel specs for example. When XI's hordes coming storming ashore at Seaside, ole Doomer Doug will be ready and waiting. :shooter-smiley:
I paid $900 cash on the counter for it.

This is what I trained on, right down to the solid stock with the butt plate compartment I kept my pipe cleaners for the carrier hole. You would be amazed how many pipe cleaners you had to run through that damn thing to get it clean.

Besides, all I need now is a bipod, a scope of some time, a cleaning kit etc and I am done. A little nostalgia as I wait for Xi the merciless hordes to storm Portland is a good thing. None of us is getting out of this alive, amigos. And the way things are going it will be sooner rather than later. All I really need at this point is somebody with a car so I can go out and shoot up the national forest.

It's coming back faster than I thought it would. I brought it home around 1830 and already I can pull the charge handle back full, put it on safe, hit the button to send it forward. Flip the button, watch it slide forward. I remember the AR-15 being really easy to deal with, once you sorted out the parts. The only thing giving me trouble so far is the dust cover, ejection port cover won't seat correctly when you try to seat it. No fear, you tube has 35 videos on AR-15s I downloaded a year or so when they were going to ban all gun related stuff. Not sure if they ever did it, but I have over 5 videos on "beginners" guide alone. Now if I can figure out someplace to shoot a 100 rounds.

Doesnt that have a non removable carry handle? How do you mount a scope on that model?

Now put a binary trigger on it.

Disagree -

This is his only AR. Thus he needs to insure that it is as reliable as possible. With a little practice he will be able to learn to squeeze the trigger pretty fast while still keeping shots on target. Now if he ever gets another AR then I agree with the binary trigger but again not for his only one.

And DD I unless I missed it I did not see you talk about mags. You want at least 10 with more always being better. Mags do not last forever. Myself I do not trust the plastic mags to stand the test of time and aluminum mags can have the internals rebuilt. However at this time it is only a little more in price to buy a brand new d&h mag from palmetto then it is to buy a rebuild kit. Thus I just buy new mags for myself.

You do realize that a binary trigger is select fire, right? Leave it on semi and it’s the same as he currently has.

There are, or were scopes and RDS available for carry handle uppers. Cheek weld wasn’t very positive with the scopes...the scope being a bit too high relative to the stock comb. Brownell’s has a retro 4X model available now, but it seems pricey to me. Optic are doable, but DD may be better off using the large aperture as a sort of ghost ring sight.

I own one so yes I know how they work. How many shots wasn't the point. The point is that usually stock is better then modified unless the point is that the mod results in more reliability. I do not feel that a binary trigger is more reliability then a mil-spec trigger. Thus for my only rifle I would not want to trust my life on an add on part which was not installed to make the gun more reliability.

Ok now you'll be wanting to trick it out.

1) sling: double or single point? If double use it like a guitar sling. Throw the sling over your head, and let it come up under your right armpit. Can hunt all day long like that, and don't have to whip it off your shoulder to use.

2) optic's: down the center rail use a scope, I like the BDC ones. in 3 X 9, and keep it on 3. Until the 9 is needed. mount an echotech on the upper right rail. That way with a slight twist you can go to your holographic sight.

3) forward pistol grip. I like the one with the embedded bipod. In case of longer shots.

4) high lumus (sp ?) flashlight. Mounted on the left center rail. High lumus (or whatever - a lot of light) means at 3 power you can see through scope out to 100 ft.

5) get a different dust cover with something really cool on it. Like the Punisher. 2nd AD, or Rebel battle flag.

6) If its just black, you can paint it up some with some desert sand color. Hint/tip: don't use pink, gives wrong impressions.

7) save, save, save, and get a silencer for that thing. Doesn't matter if you ever shoot it, it's the cool factor. LOL

I played with it last night and got everything sorted except the ejection dust cover. It still won't seat on the carrier and flaps back down.Maybe just bang on it. I also registered online with Windham in Maine. The more I handle my AR -15 the more comfortable I am. Anyway, a fixed bipod under the barrel, a light?, scope, 400 rounds in mags. This is the M-16 I carried for three years and I have no intention of doing much to it at all. It feels good
