Family pleads for answers in disappearance of Gabby Petito
Evan Axelbank reports

NORTH PORT, Fla. - The North Port Police Department is assisting agencies across multiple states to find out what happened to a woman who went missing while on a road trip with her boyfriend. The van they were traveling in was located this weekend at a home in Sarasota County.
Gabrielle Petito, 22, and her boyfriend were driving a converted camper van from Florida to New York and then to national parks out west when Gabrielle went missing.

Gabrielle’s mother said she last spoke to her daughter via text on August 25. The camper van was located at the home of her boyfriend's parents in North Port, Florida on the weekend of September 11, the day Gabrielle's mother reported her missing.

Police said Gabrielle's boyfriend is not missing but did not say where he may be or if he is considered to be involved in her disappearance.
Agencies from Sarasota County to New York to the FBI are now trying to piece together where she might have gone.

Gabrielle and her boyfriend began their trip in July, driving from Florida to New York, where Petito grew up. The couple then drove west, stopping at national parks along the way.

A little more than a month into their trip, on September 11, Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, reported her daughter missing. Schmidt said the last time she talked to her daughter was August 25.

Social media trail
The couple documented some of their travels on social media. On July 4, Gabrielle posted a photo of herself on Instagram, standing in between two rock formations in Monument Rocks, Kansas.

On July 11, Gabrielle posted a photo of herself in Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Eleven days later, she posted a photo of herself in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park.

According to her Instagram posts, Gabrielle and her boyfriend spent several weeks in Utah, visiting Mystic Hot Springs, Canyonlands National Park, and Arches National Park. One post describes the dangers of rock climbing and their experience climbing a less-traveled, treacherous area.

"We walked just a little past the arch where the rock is at such an angle, it appears impossible to walk on, but being such experienced hikers, I had confidence that I could make it!" the post read, in part. "Many people who spotted us were contemplating how we made it here, shouting things like ‘wow you guys must be crazy!’"

Gabrielle's most recent Instagram post was made on August 25. The photos appear to be taken in front of a mural called "The Monarch" in Ogden, Utah.

In a 7-minute Youtube video titled "VAN LIFE | Beginning Our Van Life Journey," posted August 19 on the account Nomadic Statik, the couple can be seen in various, unmarked locations, seeming to enjoy their life on the road.

Parts of the video feature them both, while other parts only show Gabrielle. The video is the only post visible on the Nomadic Statik Youtube channel.
Mother pleads for answers
According to Fox News, who spoke to Gabrielle’s mother, the couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, which is Petito's last known location before the pair planned to visit Yellowstone National Park.

Gabrielle's mother, Nicole Schmidt breaks down during press conference about her missing daughter

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

"I can’t say much, but she’s no longer with the van," Schmidt told Fox News of her daughter. "I don’t want to say anything more than that but for people looking for her, I want them to look for her now, not look for that van anymore."

According to police in North Port, the van was found at the home of Gabrielle's boyfriend's parents.

In a statement, North Port PD said, "We currently have no definitive information that a crime took place here in North Port. With that said, the circumstances are odd. The vehicle she was traveling in was located here in North Port. So, we are actively gathering local details and any evidence to assist in finding needed answers."

North Port police spokesperson Josh Taylor said they are not ruling anything out, including that Gabrielle may not want to be found.

"We're hopeful that she's out there somewhere. People just sometimes don't want to communicate so that's certainly still a viable option," Taylor said. "But we have to prepare for something maybe more sinister."

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department in New York, Petito's hometown, are leading the investigation into her disappearance. Anyone who has a tip about the case to submit to the Suffolk County Police Department may do so by calling 1-800-220-8477.

North Port PD says anyone who might have information about the case is asked to 941-429-7382.

The FBI Tampa Field Office is also assisting the investigation. You can also call 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit tips to tips.fbi.gov.

Petito is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

A family friend has started a GoFundMe to raise money to help in the search for Gabrielle Petito. The page calls her disappearance suspicious.

This popped up on my cell while I was waiting in my Urologist's office this AM & it just stuck w/ me all day. And now, after going dark on Social Media and not being forthcoming in any way, this:

Er...,where do you get that no agency is asking for answers from the boyfriend? That's rodiculous- the journalists aren't getting any answers because it's an active investigation where they are hoping the "victim" may still be alive. They may be acting nice and reassuring to the boyfriend (trying to keep him cooperative and talking) but they are certainly taking a very hard look at whatever his story is.

Guy needs roasted on a spit until he comes clean about where she is and what the **** happened to her.

Once verified he can be put back on the spit until well done.

ST, he came home and lawyered up instantly. The original story indicated that the van had been recovered but they didn't say WHERE... Parents' home??

Roast him on a slow fire.

I could have misinterpreted it but for him to wind up at home w/ the van but not her and no explanation just makes the hair on the back of my neck rise up.

Hopefully she ran off w/ someone or joined a commune but something says no way to me

Oh, I absolutely agree... I just didn't understand where you got the idea no law enforcement agency is looking into the story. Guaranteed *multiple* jurisdictions are busy with the boyfriend under their microscopes... it's very complex because of the number of states their travels encompassed, but that problem may also be the solution, because you've got multiple people from multiple agencies on it...better than one overworked detective in a suburban agency.

She met a guy in a bar, they established rapport and left leaving the boyfriend stranded. But she never came back so our boy bailed for home too embarrassed to tell anybody what happened. A plot for a novel.

hope you're right about 'multiple agencies' but there's been a historical issue in sharing between LEAs. Hopefully, not this time because all kinds of shitty outcomes come to mind.

The world is full of predators.

And prey.
Gotta admit, though... at first glance, that young man could fool me. (And I Hope for his sake they just got into an argument and stomped off) But it's always a good reminder that predators often camoflage as lambs.

Before I condemn him, I have to remember that college age women can be some of the most manipulative creatures on earth (and no, she doesn't *look* like that type, either). And it occurred to me long ago that a woman could make her husband's life hell on earth by doing some careful planning, staging a public fight, and then disappearing...

Neither here nor there.
Maybe change the thread title, I thought I was going to read up about a clogged septic tank or something similar, not a missing woman.

Play, Foul 1 ea.

Somebody has a screw loose or maybe they both did.

It's a 2-3 day drive from the Park to Florida, I reckon, and it's hard to imagine that someone named Gabby didn't appear to be in the van over that period of time.

If something happened on a hiking trail in the back country of the Park, though, she's been et by now by bears, wolves, eagles and coyotes. All the rangers would find would be scraps of cloth and some bones.

Even if it was purely accidental (falling down a cliff or in a geyser, for instance) and not faked to look like one, how could the guy lock up so badly that all he could do was drive home quick as he could and hide in the basement, instead of going right to the rangers and reporting her missing?

People can do really strange things under stress. It's not out of the question that he was in something like a fugue state following a traumatic event that killed her. But that's not my default explanation.

Just for comparison, remember the woman who hit a guy with her car, drove home with him embedded in the windshield, parked in the garage and left him to die there.

Now that's a plot line!

Gone Girl! Bestselling novel and movie...

Gone Girl is a 2014 American psychological thriller film directed by David Fincher and written by Gillian Flynn, based on her 2012 novel of the same title. Set in Missouri, the story is a postmodern mystery that follows the events surrounding Nick Dunne, who becomes the prime suspect in the sudden disappearance of his wife Amy.

From UK Daily Mail:

EXCLUSIVE: 'Maybe the relationship wasn't what I thought.' Mother of 'van-life' woman Gabby Petito says boyfriend and his family IGNORED her desperate texts searching for her daughter even before she reported her missing
  • Gabby Petito, 22, was reported missing by her family on Saturday
  • She was on a cross-country trip with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie in a camper van, but he returned to their home in North Port, Florida, without her
  • Brian has hired an attorney and refuses to cooperate with investigators
  • Gabby's mother Nicole Schmidt last spoke on the phone with her on August 25
  • Schmidt tells DailyMail.com that on September 10 she texted Brian and his mother Roberta trying to get in touch with Gabby, but neither replied
  • 'I knew something was wrong,' Schmidt said. 'I felt something was off and I needed to get her reported missing immediately'
  • Gabby and Brian started their road trip on July 2, driving towards Oregon, and documented most of it on Instagram and YouTube

Saw a clip of her father (parents divorced, mom remarried) on S Smith The gist of it was the BF wasn't talking to anyone in LE, period and you could tell from his demeanour & body language he'd get an answer in a very brief time span. Might not be PC but I think many here might be of a similar mind.

I’ve been following this story. It’s so incredibly sad watching the pleas of her family for her return. Boyfriend either killed her or left her stranded to die alone. It hits home having kids her age.. my heart just hurts for this poor girl and her family. :(

Brian went to his folks' home. SOMEONE lawyered up, possibly Brian possibly his folks, and the lawyers are doing the talking. We have nothing actually said by Brian, and not holding my breath. Interesting.

He's sitting there with her van. If he killed her, he had some scenario in mind, some story to tell, whereby he ends up with the van and without guilt. No such story is being put forth. Also interesting.

Yeah... while his actions actually are the smartest thing he can do, it also makes any normal person think "guilty as hell", because if he *didn't * have anything to do with her disappearance, it takes a cold, COLD "boyfriend" not to want to help her family find her.

Starting to get a real sociopath vibe here. Also, upscale family proving how untouchable their class is?

Maybe he never read any texts from Gabby's mom. Can't guess re his folks. Maybe he would have helped them if he had read any texts.

Little conflict in the story. The van was at his folks' home, but the story says he went to the home he shared with Gabby, if I read that right.

I can't think of any killer, no matter how cold, who would think he could drive home in the victim's car and not have to explain it.

Might be a psychopath, might be in shock.

Sorry....but if he is innocent of her missing/death his current actions are not helping him. DW and I saw the 60 minutes or whatever show on this......this situation stinks to high heaven. Until he can PROVE his innocence - HE'S GUILTY!! This is not a simple lovers quarrel. Something happened and he's part of it!

I'm going to guess that she is fine and will turn up in a month or so. Most of the vanlyfe girls have a SO who actually own the van. Guessing they had a nasty breakup, she took off, and he called mommy and daddy who told him to haul ass home. This day and age its just a no brainer to SHUT UP and get a lawyer.

How many times on here has a women gone missing then shown up months later from her whorecation? Meanwhile posters go on and on that the husband or boyfriend did it...

I must have missed all those posts over the years.

It was either her van or they owned it together, I have heard and/or read both versions.
They have been together for 2 1/2 years and engaged for over a year.
They spent weeks getting the van decorated/organized for their trip.
