Armed thieves are on the run in France after stealing 70kg (154lbs) of gold in a motorway heist on Monday.

The gang of four swooped on a security van in two cars, using one to block the road's exit, near the city of Lyon.

The robbers then put the powdered gold, worth €1.5m ($1.6m; £1.3m), into their getaway car, locking two security guards in the back of the van and setting fire to their other vehicle.

The two guards were rescued by police after a tip-off from a witness.

The thieves fled immediately, leaving the fire to spread and gut nearby vehicles before it was put out by firefighters.

The robbery took place on the A6 motorway, which connects Lyon to Paris.

Police said they are hunting for the perpetrators.

Other recent high-profile robberies:

In October, US reality TV star Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint at a luxury residence in Paris by men dressed as police officers. Police said a box containing jewellery worth up to €6m was among items taken.

Masked men robbed two Qatari women and their driver on a motorway north of Paris in November, taking jewellery and valuables worth €5m.

Also in November, a man in New York managed to steal a bucket of gold flakes, worth $1.6m, from the back of a truck while it was unattended.

Thieves in France steal 'dozens of kilos' of gold in armoured van raid

Police are combing fields and towns in south-east France in a search for four thieves who stole dozens of kilograms of gold from an armoured van before setting cars on fire near a major motorway.

The thieves, in two cars, surrounded the van and forced it off the A6 road between Paris and Lyon on Monday, a spokesman for the national gendarmerie said. They then seized the gold, locked the two security workers in the back of the van and set one of their own cars on fire before fleeing, according to the spokesman.

He said the flames spread to three other cars and threatened to engulf the van before police intervened to rescue the two men inside after being tipped off by a witness. The other cars affected appeared to have been parked and unoccupied, he said.

Police vehicles and a helicopter were searching the area around the town of Dardilly, the spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to give details about an ongoing investigation.

Forensic police were examining the burnt-out cars and the empty van, operated by the security company Loomis.

Big jewel thefts occasionally occur in France, including some high-profile highway heists, but it was rare to see a large-scale gold robbery such as this, gendarmes said.

The spokesman said dozens of kilograms were stolen. With gold selling for more than $37,000 (£30,000) a kg, the value of the haul could be more than £700,000.

Authorities did not identify the suspected attackers or release details of who owned the gold or where it was being taken.

Armed robbers stole £2million in gold from an armoured van before locking the guards inside and torching their abandoned car, it has emerged.

A manhunt is underway after the gang of four thieves targeted the security truck on a major road near the city of Lyon.

Police rescued*two drivers from the Loomis truck thanks to a tip-off from a witness as fire threatened to spread to the vehicle.

Four robbers used two cars to block the van at a motorway exit leading to an industrial estate north of Lyon, sources said.*

After grabbing the gold and loading it into their getaway car, they locked the two security guards in the back of their van.*Before making off, they set fire to their abandoned vehicle.

The fire gutted the car and spread to nearby vehicles but police arrived on the scene before it engulfed the van, freeing the two guards who escaped unharmed, the investigators said.

Patrol cars and a helicopter are searching the surrounding area, a national gendarmerie spokesman said.

The robbery took place on the A6 highway near Dardilly.

Calling such attacks extremely rare, the spokesman said they stole dozens of kilograms of gold.*

According to reports, 70 kg of gold was seized with a value of about £2million.

It comes just weeks after two Qatari women were robbed in a 5 million euro heist on a Paris motorway.

The two victims, in their 60s, were being driven from Le Bourget airport in a Bentley when they were targeted in a lay-by on the A1, north east of the capital.

Robbers then attacked the driver and two terrified tourists with pepper spray before forcing open the boot of the luxury vehicle.

*In March 2015, a group of around 15 robbers held up two vans carrying jewellery worth around nine million euros at a toll booth on the A6, near the central city of Auxerre.

I recall the daylight armored car robbery in Nice a while back that was videoed by the people in cars stuck in the back-up caused by the AK armed robbers from over a year ago...

Begs the question whether it is just "the Mob", or some group doing these robberies to finance "other activities"...
