? for home canners

I have two questions that I'd like to ask for anyone that home cans. First, has anyone ever tried reusing lids? Mybe use glyercin to soften the rubber? Second, has anyone ever tried canning and how would you do it... bacon? Thought it would be nice in jelly jars... I know Hormel does it but it's rather expensive.

Deemy,

I can't answer the bacon question, but I can talk about the lids. I reuse the rings, but the flat lids aren't good to reuse. Once they go through the canning process, they lose their ability to seal properly. I asked a home economist about this once, and she said not to use them over as the food is more likely to spoil, since the seal might not be secure. I also asked the Mason and Ball people and they said they will not guarantee lids that have been reused. How they know if a lid is reused is beyond me. Perhaps someone else out there has had success, but I have not.

Happy canning!

Deemy,

I checked out the link. Quite impressive. It's the rings that you have to replace if necessary. I was wondering how they could have reusable lids; now I know!! If you decide to use these, let us know how they work out. Of course, we probably won't know until next winter. Good luck to you!

I emailed the company and asked if they really did work and she said yes but to be on the safe side for every 100 ordered get one ore two extra rubber rings...not bad. Yes, you have to have the regular metal bands which is of poor quality now. Will order some on Monday...if I had the guts I'd ask if they would ship out one for a sample but sigh I don't. These remind greatly of the zince lids and rubber seals our grandmothers used, they used them over and over and they were good enough for them... will pay for itself the second year I think!

I remember those!! They were bears to twist on and off the jars. But they were fun to play with. After the new lids came out, we played ring toss with the rubber rings. I have some trivets crocheted with these rings. Pretty impressive. Thanks for the memories.
