SARASOTA, Fla. – Authorities say a 14-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed by his father at a Florida gun range.

William Brumby was firing his weapon at the High Noon Gun Range in Sarasota on Sunday when a spent shell casing deflected off a nearby wall and landed inside his shirt.

A statement from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office says Brumby tried to remove the shell and accidentally fired the gun at his son, who was standing directly behind him.

The boy, Stephen J. Brumby, later died at a local hospital. The father's two other children were with him but were not injured.

Police say they are continuing their investigation after reviewing a video of the shooting and talking to witnesses. No charges have been filed against Brumby.

A terrible tragedy for all involved. Unfortunately I also expect it to exploited for political reasons. Yahoo also had a version of this story with the usual editorial BS about it being promoted as a 'Safe' range. Expect calls for 'oversight' on ranges very soon.

That happens to me a lot but I keep my shirt closed & some land in my shirt pocket. Ya gotta lay the weapon down facing down range and then proceed to remove the casing. Fricking STUPID to turn around facing son with loaded weapon AND finger on the trigger. fricking firearms 101. He also endangered everyone else at the range. People caught sweeping their weapon for ANY reason should be banned from the range.

I've had brass from an AK and .45 drop into my shirt. Yes it is hot but ignoring it is easy because it's not THAT hot.

What a tragedy and this will haunt him for life and especially each time he picks up a firearm.

And yes the poor man is in hell and will be for some time.

I've had just-expended brass go down my shirt on several occasions. Very painful, certainly, but not even CLOSE to making me involuntarily pull the trigger again. If anything, it made my finger withdraw automatically from the trigger.

Like all tragedies, about all we can do is try to learn from it. I know the next time I'm in the range, I'll be a bit more aware of safety. I trained a couple of co-workers recently, both new to firearms, and I made sure to tell them not to wear V-neck shirts or tank tops. I felt a little funny doing that talk (one is married, the other divorced) but right now I'm very glad I did.

Me too. My right eye is bad, so I have to use my left eye when shooting. When in the army, I regularly had spent M16 rounds ejecting onto my right cheek or into the open collar of my shirt. Not an enjoyable experience.

Years ago my wife (now ex) was shooting my Colt 1911 with a low cut top and one went right down the "gap", I was standing behind her to the right. The first thing I did was grab the gun! Next I tried to go for the brass... She was not receptive...

Well done, Sir. All jokes aside, you did the right thing!
