Here. Now shut up. :D

‘First Ever’ Commute in The Jetson Flying Car – CEO Says it Can Make You a Pilot in 5 Minutes

A company owner has completed the ‘first ever’ commute in an $83,000 (£68,000) space-age flying car.

Tomasz Patan is co-founder of the Swedish firm Jetson, and he just piloted the Jetson ONE vehicle from his Italian home to a company building in Tuscany.

Jetson say the trip to the Santa Maria a Monte facility is a “momentous occasion for the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) sector.”

The aircraft is powered by eight electric motors, has a flight time of 20 minutes, and can reach a top speed of 63mph (102kph).

The futuristic vehicle is constructed from a race car-inspired lightweight aluminium space frame and a Carbon-Kevlar composite body.

Running on a high discharge lithium-ion battery, the vehicle can carry a pilot’s weight of 210 pounds (100kg).

“Our long-term goal is to democratize flight. We firmly believe the ‘eVTOL’ is the future for mass transportation. We are committed to making this a reality,” Tomasz Patan, co-founder and CTO, said.

“The Jetson is built like a Formula One car for the sky and incredibly fun to fly. Most importantly, the Flight Stabilisation System we developed makes flight super easy. We can make anyone a pilot in less than five minutes,” said Peter Ternstrom, co-founder and President.

Jetson say their prototype “proof of concept” was finished in the spring of 2018, and they have since been working on a “consumer-friendly” version.

They add, “The entire 2022 production is sold out, but we are accepting orders for 2023 delivery.”

4 roter flying weed-wacker with sharp blades... what could go wrong.

WHY do people spend their month on stupid stuff like this that will never have a mass acceptance!?

I’ve watched a few videos and looks like a lot of fun; for now however, extremely low level flight in recreational areas akin to using a four wheeler. But with cars now driving themselves, I can see some potential for future use -with obvious flight training. But definitely not with those PhDs that wear a mask outside… :kaid:
Along these lines for now:

BOTH the software AND hardware are mature science. I don't doubt that you CAN learn to fly one of them thangs in 10 minutes.
Understand that *George will be doing MOST of the flying, with limited directional inputs from whatever meat-stick is attached to the controls.

*George. Often used name for the autopilot in larger planes.

If I had such a strong need to get around in the air, I’d checkout ultralights first:

I'll be honest, when I got my new Crosstrek in February, I was really impressed with the new smart safety features. They honestly make a hell of a lot of sense and are pretty incredible… :hmm:

I know no one is a fan - but it's coming. You can't hold back the future. Will there be problems, even death? Yep. But all the objections made here were almost the same objections made about the car vs the horse.

I'd rather spend $83000 on something that can fly than $55000 on a car. Not that I will have one. Definitely for the younger generation. But it's coming.

What I like about something like this, though, is its potential in winter. While that open cockpit would be downright frigid--they may be able to do something about that--it would definitely not care two hoots about icy or snow-covered roads.

Like that infernal horseless carriage.

It's a toy for the rich and will never replace the tried and true hayburner.
people can't drive well on the flat plane of earth. they crash, bump, clog, and do all sorts of stupid things. add to that the vertical dimension of height? with no lanes, signs, lights, guard rails, fog, clouds, rain, I could go on.
The premise of your challenge is quite weak.
They might sell a few hundred to people with more money than brains or enthusiasts, but to promote this weedwacker as an everyday conveyance? Not reality.

I believe some sarcasm was involved on that one. :D

But one of the big reasons people don't drive so hot is that they have to contend with everyone ELSE driving. Second-guessing all those crazy people isn't easy under good circumstances.

They want to "democratize flight", they need to add a couple more rotors and motors to get that weight up a bit. Big ole dudes like myself got no chance in there.
I'm 240'50 & the wife is 150 or so. This toy won't cut it just on capacity. A flight time of 20 minutes means it'll take a out 5-6 mos to get from 38105 to Savanah GA

Pride comes before the fall.....Pride month ended.
They will make larger one's for more capacity. It should be a six rotor machine, as they can lose a motor and still fly fine. I'm surprised they chose the four motor version. Be a fun way to travel to work, that's for sure. Battery's could be swapped out easily, I'd think.

"The aircraft is powered by eight electric motors, has a flight time of 20 minutes, and can reach a top speed of 63mph (102kph)."

Translation: When you consider landing and takeoff this thing can only travel less than 20 miles before needing to be recharged. Probably no more than 15 miles.

Fly a little lower and cut the grass on either side of that path.

The simple reason US Drivers do such a BAD JOB of driving is, that US Drivers are NEVER TAUGHT TO DRIVE PROPERLY.

Ask almost ANY European driver how long it took them to go through Driver Training.

It won't be a couple of months 2 days a week 2 hours a day.

I see the human pilot being taken out of the operation and traveling will be programmed into network software that will coordinate paths. Not very different than drone swarm software.

That is no doubt how it would be done. Allowing the passenger to actively control the craft would require a pilot’s license.
