Pennsylvania Man Indicted for Assaulting a Reproductive Health Care Provider

Friday, September 23, 2022
A federal grand jury in Pennsylvania returned an indictment today charging a local man for assaulting a reproductive health care clinic escort in Philadelphia.
According to court documents, Mark Houck, 48, of Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, is alleged to have twice assaulted a man because he was a volunteer reproductive health clinic escort. The two-count indictment charges Houck with a violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which makes it a federal crime to use force with the intent to injure, intimidate, and interfere with anyone because that person is a provider of reproductive health care.
The charges stem from two separate incidents on Oct. 13, 2021, where Houck assaulted the victim, identified in the indictment as “B.L.,” because B.L. was a volunteer escort at the reproductive health care clinic.
If convicted of the offenses, Houck faces up to a maximum of 11 years in prison, three years of supervised release and fines of up to $350,000.
The FBI Philadelphia Field Office investigated the case. Trial Attorney Sanjay Patel of the Civil Rights Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Anita Eve for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania are prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Breaking - Dept of Justice Storm Troopers Haul Away PA Pro-Life Activist From His Home In The Wee Hours Of This Morning

Mark Houck is a pro-life activist in Pennsylvania and the founder/president of the King’s Men (see thekingsmen.org) He has been going to the Planned Parenthood mill known as the Elizabeth Blackwell Health Center in Philadelphia every Wednesday for four hours. On October 15, 2021, Houck was there with his young son and another prayer partner. A male deathscort, 72 years old, was there to rush women inside the mill so that their babies could be killed.

The deathscort took some time to harass the young Houck boy. Mark repeatedly told the deathscort to stop harassing his son. The boy walked down to a corner and the deathscort followed him. Houck pushed the deathscort away from his boy. At that, the deathscort pulled a dramatic flop scene then rushed into the mill. All this was recorded by Planned Parenthood’s security cameras. Soon thereafter Houck got served with papers.

The following winter, there were three different court dates. For the first one, the pro-life attorney couldn’t be there. The next date the pro-abort attorney didn’t show. The judge then said if the pro-aborts didn’t show for the third date, that he would throw the case out. The deathscort himself failed to show so the case was indeed thrown out.

That should have been the end of it, but the Department of Justice got involved. They were looking for a possible FACE violation. The video taken by Planned Parenthood showed that to be nonsensical. Pro-life attorneys have a copy of said video. Moreover, the attached Google-Earth picture also makes a lie of the FACE charge. Any possible corner where the altercation took place is far enough from the mill entrance to render a FACE charge farcical on its face.

That didn’t stop the ever-intrepid feds from borrowing tactics from the Nazi Gestapo and springing into action, as it were. On Friday, September 23, in the morning at 7:00 AM, 20-25 armed men barged into the Houck residence.

They dragged Houck out in handcuffs in front of his wife and children. They took him to the Federal Detention Center at 6th and Market and arraigned him. They put him in handcuffs and leg shackles. They chained him to a table for four hours. Afterwards they let him out on his own recognizance.

If any of this sounds vaguely familiar, it should. Recall this post from five months ago. Refresh your memories regarding the pro-life activists who engaged in a rescue at the DC mill of Cesare Santangelo on Oct 20, 2020. Armed agents of the Department of Justice burst into the homes of these pro-lifers, also in the wee hours of the morning. They too were let go after putting them through a harangue.

At the time of this writing, legal strategies are still being weighed and considered. Obviously, this is a breaking situation so we’ll advise as is deemed best.

Bet they did not have an arrest warrant for this, Yes thats correct an arrest warrant to go into someones home and arrest them for a known past event, in this case the court ruled in his favor so they could not use that for an arrest!
Unlawful arrest, yes it's a big deal.

I remember seeing the surveillance footage of McVeigh and another man pull up and park the rental truck. Soon after the surveillance footage was released it was pulled from all news and McVeigh was said to be the sole bomber with never another mention of the other man who got out of the truck. The next thing was to claim McVeigh was a member of the militia which was also another lie spread by the feds. McVeigh had only attended a few militia meetings that were open to the public and was not a member of the militia. Next thing I saw was the videotaped interviews with the first responders and explosive experts in which many publicly stated the main explosion came from inside the building at key support points (evidence showed the support beams were blown outward not inward from the truck bomb) and the blast from the truck bomb was incapable of collapsing the building. Once again, all those interviews with the first responders who did not follow the narrative the feds were pushing were pulled from the news and everybody in the media stopped talking about it. The correct and more likely term for the OK city bombing would be a "false flag operation". Much like the 9-11 attack which when researched leaves far more questions than answers. Just about every foiled "so called" terrorist attack since 9-11 has been financed, planned, and manufactured by the feds. People should wonder what the odds are that the terrorist attacks and mass shooting that did take place were also financed, planned, and manufactured by the feds but somehow were successfully implemented due to deviations from the initial planned attacks without notifying the feds informant or undercover agent or maybe to get the desired outcome the feds wanted enough death and destructions to swing public opinion in the desired direction.
And don't forget - how fast the death penalty was carried out.

DW & I just watched the Ted Nugent show on RAV channel. Ted is quite critical of Biden and much of the Fed Govt. We were pondering how long before Ted gets raided at o dark thirty, with a platoon of FBI's, then dragged out & charged with ????. Also, how long before he gets stormed by a bunch IRS, ATF, and who knows what else. Ted is popular & high profile, so he is very probable to be targeted.

The list of those Biden considers enemies of himself is growing ! I hope Ted is very careful, and stays alert. I hope he does not have any auto accidents !!!

Just done, Samuel Adams; family stuff today and I slept in.

Thanks again for the link.
I read the report just after it was released but I was up North then. The attached letters weren't available to us but certainly add some background.

Another incident (series of??) we'll never get the straight goods on because there's a strong possibility getting all the dirt into public view would drag some people down.

Actually the pro lifer father involved is a major voice in this movement

And this above all else is the threat he poses to those who are exploiting others orifices to $ell.

The obvious side effect of quitting porn was more attention focused on his wife and the inevitable children they created.

He is saying turn off the porn, turn on your own babymaker machine instead.

There are forces out there that will kill to keep the lucrative porn industry churning out product.

They don't want this guy to get a foothold at swaying the purcha$ing public as a martyr.

If the Feds want to polish their street creds, and show how " bad azz " they are, lets see them make some of these big dynamic entry raids on :
BLM,
Antifa,
Bloods
Crips
Black Panthers
Hells Angels
Corleones from Chicago
MS 13
Any gangs from Russia
Columbian Cartels
Mexican Cartels

The Feds raiding Trump, taking down Peter Navarro, this Pro Life activist, pffffffffffffffffffffft big deal.

Lets see them go macho manno a manno with those on my list ! Then they might have some bragging rights. But they might get bloodied a bit. They will find they are not as bad azz as they want to make people think they are.

You are entirely full of shit, sir. McVeigh’s beef was with the federal reserve (or the IRS; I’ve forgotten which one), but he didn’t have the stones to attack those buildings. Someone is full of shit but it aint me. His "Beef " as you say was NOT at the Federal Reserve nor the IRS.

Timothy James McVeigh (April 23, 1968 – June 11, 2001) was an American domestic terrorist responsible for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people, 19 of whom were children, injured more than 680 others, and destroyed one-third of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.[5][6] The bombing was the deadliest act of terrorism in the United States prior to the September 11 attacks. It remains the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.[7]

A Gulf War veteran, McVeigh sought revenge against the federal government for the 1993 Waco siege that ended in the deaths of 82 people, many of whom were children, as well as the 1992 Ruby Ridge incident and American foreign policy. He hoped to inspire a revolution against the federal government, and defended the bombing as a legitimate tactic against what he saw as a tyrannical government.[8] He was arrested shortly after the bombing and indicted on 160 state offenses and 11 federal offenses, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction. He was found guilty on all counts in 1997 and sentenced to death

See the Tyrants are able to set the narrative and some gullible people believe them. This was pure eye for an eye.

Say what you want , as loathsome as his tactics were he did SOMETHING.

If thinking that fighting back by any means is Maladjusted then so be it, however you might want to get facts right before attacking someone.

But perhaps you are right and I am wrong, we should just be content with calling them Gestapo and Stasi and mean names, not protecting ourselves from tyrants aggression , that would be the height of being properly adjusted, especially from the Governments point of view. Oh wait, no they don't like that either. Boy we are damned if we do and damned if we don't now huh ?

Mark Houck Pleads Not Guilty to Bogus Charges From Biden Administration

National | Steven Ertelt | Sep 27, 2022 | 3:35PM | Washington, DC
markhouck4.png

Pro-Life advocate Mark Houck has pleaded not guilty to bogus charges from the Biden administration that he violated the federal FACE law.

As LifeNews has reported, Joe Biden’s Justice Department clearly targeted a pro-life man and his family with a shocking home raid as an act of persecution.

Mark Houck made national headlines over the weekend after 20 heavily-armed federal agents stormed his home at dawn on September 23 — frightening his family, pointing guns at his head, and then arresting him in front of his wife and seven young children.

Biden’s FBI has raided the home of the well-known pro-life advocate and arrested him on a bogus charge that had already been thrown out of court. Biden’s administration is coming under fire for weaponizing the FBI and Department of Justice to target pro-life conservatives.

With the help of pro-life attorneys during an appearance in federal court, Houck pleaded not guilty in Pennsylvania federal court to violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which makes it a federal crime to use force with the intent to injure, intimidate and interfere with anyone trying to access either abortion at an abortion business or medical care at a pregnancy center.

Houck’s attorney, Peter Breen, said that the case already made its way through the state court process and was thrown out, but the Biden Department of Justice took up the matter nearly a year later as a form of “political prosecution.”

“If he was truly a danger to the community, they wouldn’t have waited a year to prosecute,” Breen, VP senior counsel of the Thomas Moore Society, said outside the courthouse. “Serious questions need to be asked of the Attorney General. What was he thinking? Why did they do this obscene show of force against a peaceful pillar of the community?”

“It put officers’ lives in danger. It put the Houck family in danger. And it was an utter waste of judicial resources and taxpayer resources,” Breen said.

As Fox News reports:
Breen said his team contacted the DOJ and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in June to inform them they had no case based on controlling precedent but if they decided to indict, defense would present Houck willingly in response to a summons. Breen said the next notice he received was that his client was in custody.
“This is a political prosecution,” Breen said. “And what’s clear from the Department of Justice at its highest levels which is directing this case that they are trying to send a message to pro-life and people of faith – ‘don’t mess with us.’ They want to intimidate — they want to cause good people like Mark to stop praying and counseling at the abortion clinics of our country. And that’s not going to happen.”
The U.S. government alleges that Houck assaulted and “forcefully shoved” Bruce Love, a 72-year-old volunteer at a Philadelphia Planned Parenthood.
Breen, however, categorized the abortion escort as “extremely aggressive,” saying Love was “harassing” Houck’s 12-year-old son before an “altercation ensued.”
“What in the world would possess the Department of Justice to send 20 or so heavily armed agents to this family’s home, violate the sanctity of that home, frighten the children and then drag their father away instead of allowing us to present him peacefully – which we had offered to do?” Breen said on Tuesday.
Fortunately, pro-life Americans have stepped up and are helping the Houck family in this battle:
More than 4,000 donations have been offered to Houck and his family, totaling $251,810 by Tuesday afternoon.
GiveSendGo, an alternative to GoFundMe, allows users to submit prayers, too. So far, more than 3,500 prayers have been offered to the family.
Pennsylvania pro-life activist Ashley Garecht and her husband Joe Garecht created the crowdfunding page. Notably, the couple’s daughters in 2019, then just 13 and 15 years old, were harassed by then-state Rep. Brian Sims (D) for several minutes as they prayed for unborn children outside a Pennsylvania abortion clinic.
Garecht told The Daily Wire over the weekend that Houck was protecting his son from an aggressive Planned Parenthood escort harassing the boy. She said the case was dismissed by a federal court in Philadelphia when the escort tried to press charges, but Biden’s DOJ picked it up anyway.
“Last year, Mark and his son were praying in front of the [Planned Parenthood] at 12th and Locust,” the GiveSendGo account says. “When one of the escorts began harassing Mark’s son they walked down the street away from the entrance to the building. The escort followed them, and when he continued yelling at Mark’s son, Mark pushed him away.”
The Garechts say the funds raised through the campaign “will go to help the family with any necessary expenses.”
“Your generosity is greatly appreciated,” the couple adds. “Let’s show the Houck family they are not alone, while we show Planned Parenthood and its militant pro-abortion allies that the pro-life community will not be silenced by fear and intimidation.”
Houck, a father of seven, is frequently seen sidewalk counseling in front of Philadelphia abortion businesses to help women choose pro-life alternatives.

In October 2021, Houck was involved in an incident outside a Philadelphia abortion business where a pro-abortion clinic escort had repeatedly bullied and intimidated his 12-year-old son who was with him to help sidewalk counsel and encourage women to choose pro-life alternatives. After multiple verbal assaults and the abortion activist getting into his son’s face, Houck pushed him away and he fell.

Houck, who regularly prays the rosary outside the clinic, maintains he was defending his 12-year-old son from the escort’s verbal harassment, a family spokesman, Brian Middleton, told CNA. The man fell when Houck pushed him away, Middleton said. The incident was so minor that charges were never pressed and a court ultimately dismissed a complaint the abortion activist filed.

However, Houck is now alleged to have violated the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, commonly known as FACE, outside of a Pennsylvania abortion facility.

But, new information for Houck’s attorney, Thomas More Society Vice President and Senior Counsel Peter Breen, indicates Houck agree months ago to turn himself in voluntarily.

In June 2022, Thomas More Society attorneys notified the Biden Department of Justice that the FACE Act does not cover one-on-one altercations like the one involving Houck, which was initiated by the abortion proponent who was harassing Houck’s son. The Department of Justice was also advised that if the decision was made to bring a charge against Houck despite lack of legal foundation, Houck would appear voluntarily.

“Rather than accepting Mark Houck’s offer to appear voluntarily, the Biden Department of Justice chose to make an unnecessary show of potentially deadly force, sending twenty heavily armed federal agents to the Houck residence at dawn this past Friday,” explained Breen. “In threatening form, after nearly breaking down the family’s front door, at least five agents pointed guns at Mark’s head and arrested him in front of his wife and seven young children, who were terrified that their husband and father would be shot dead before their eyes.”

“This case is being brought solely to intimidate people of faith and pro-life Americans,” stated Breen. “Mark Houck is innocent of these lawless charges, and we intend to prove that in court.”

The case has drawn condemnation from pro-life members of Congress like Senator Josh Hawley and Congressman Chip Roy.

If the DOJ pursue the charges, it will be going agaisnt court precedent. In June 2019, Thomas More Society attorneys won a case in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, establishing that a one-off altercation, like the one in which the Biden Department of Justice is levying two counts against Houck, cannot form the basis for a FACE claim.

As CNA reports, the incident at the abortion center was so minor that local charges were never filed.
When both the city police and the district attorney declined to file charges against Houck, the escort filed a private criminal complaint in Philadelphia municipal court, Middleton said. The case was dismissed in July when the man repeatedly didn’t show up in court, Middleton said.
Just days later, Houck received a “target letter” from the U.S. Attorney’s Office informing him that he was the focus of a federal criminal probe into the same incident, Middleton said.
Through his attorney at the time, Houck tried to contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office to discuss the case but never received a response, Middleton said.
“The next time they heard anything was Friday morning,” he said.
Biden’s Justice Department is now charging Houck with violating the FACE Act and Houck is now facing a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines of up to $350,000 for merely defending his son from being attacked.

However, Houck never blocked access to the abortion center, which is what the law is designed to stop, and the incident was nothing more than a minor scuffle.

The Houck family is now panicked about what will happen to Mark from here. A GiveSendGo has been set up to help raise funds to support them and to assist with Mark’s legal defense.
Mark Houck was taken to “the federal building in downtown Philadelphia,” his wife told the outlet.
As a result of the incident, the children were “really sad and stressed,” Ryan-Marie said. “I don’t really know what’s going to come of it when you see guns pointed at your dad and your mom in your house when you first wake up in the morning.”

Congressman Chip Roy Slams FBI Raid on Pro-Life Advocate: “This is a Brazen Abuse of Power”

National | Steven Ertelt | Sep 27, 2022 | 10:38AM | Washington, DC
chiproy4.png

Congressman Chip Roy of Texas, an outspoken pro-life conservative, is condemning the FBI raid on a peaceful pro-life advocate.

Biden’s FBI has raided the home of the well-known pro-life advocate and arrested on a bogus charge that had already been thrown out of court. Biden’s administration is coming under fire for weaponizing the FBI and Department of Justice to target pro-life conservatives.

Now, Congressman Roy is speaking out against the shocking raid.

“This appears to be nothing less than a brazen continuation of the abuse of power by federal authorities against average American citizens that must stop,” Roy told The Daily Signal on Monday.

“We owe the American people congressional hearings to provide public and transparent accountability for any and all wrongdoing,” he continued. “Even further, the FBI needs a complete and total overhaul to return primary law enforcement power to the states and to get the Bureau out of the business of politics once and for all.”

Republican Indiana Rep. Jim Banks also commented on the raid and said he’s not surprised given that Attorney General Merrick Garland is pro-abortion, condemned the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade and hasn’t prosecuted anyone for attacking pregnancy centers and churches.

“Merrick Garland sent a press release attacking the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which explains why he’s ignored attacks on pregnancy centers and attempts to intimidate Justices,” he told The Daily Signal. “Criminals are criminals, no matter who they vote for and Republicans oppose violence in all its forms. But in recent weeks whistleblowers have confirmed that partisan politics hold sway at the Biden DOJ.”

Their comments come after Sen. Josh Hawley spoke out and said he is demanding answers from Garland and wants the head of the Justice Department to testify under oath in Congress about the raid.
“If the shocking reports about the FBI arresting a man Friday in rural Pennsylvania are true, then you have a lot to answer for,” Hawley said in the letter to Garland.

“These reports state that federal authorities obtained a warrant under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act to arrest Mark Houck for allegedly committing a single count of simple assault by pushing a man near an abortion clinic,” he continued. “Houck contends that he only did so to defend his child against the man, and local authorities have already dismissed a separate criminal complaint against Houck for the conduct.”
“Not only did your office turn a local dispute into a national case, but the FBI reportedly executed the search warrant in as extreme a manner as one can image,” he said.
“As Houck’s wife said, when they saw 20 or more agents arrest their father at gunpoint, ‘the kids were all just screaming,’” Hawley wrote. “To say the least, using this kind of force to make an arrest for a single charge of simple assault is unprecedented.”
“I want to know from Merrick Garland directly why Biden’s DOJ is arresting Catholic protestors like terrorists – complete with SWAT-style tactics – while letting actual terrorist acts like firebombings go unpunished,” he said.
“The corruption & abuse of law is out of control,” Hawley stated. “Come January, the new Republican Congress must launch a thorough, public investigation of DOJ & the FBI – from their targeting of parents to religious protestors to political opponents.”
“What Biden is doing is wrong,” the senator slammed. “And dangerous.”
“I believe you must testify, under oath, before the Senate Judiciary Committee about your selective use and apparent political weaponization of the FACE Act,” Hawley wrote to Garland.
Houck, a father of seven, is frequently seen sidewalk counseling in front of Philadelphia abortion businesses to help women choose pro-life alternatives.

In September 2021, Houck was involved in an incident outside a Philadelphia abortion business where a pro-abortion clinic escort had repeatedly bullied and intimidated his 12-year-old son who was with him to help sidewalk counsel and encourage women to choose pro-life alternatives.

Man Admits Shooting Elderly Pro-Life Woman, His Wife’s a Leftist Who Threatens Conservatives

A Michigan man has admitted to shooting an elderly pro-life woman who was canvassing homes to campaign against Proposal 3, which would legalize abortions up to birth in the state. Meanwhile, his wife is a radical leftist and abortion activist who regularly threatens conservatives in social media posts.

Residents of the home at which an unarmed, 84-year-old pro-life woman was shot on September 20 spoke with a local Grand Rapids news station.

WOOD-TV’s evening news shows Richard and Sharon Harvey of Odessa Township. During the interview, Richard Harvey admits shooting the pro-life woman, who was peacefully canvassing to vote “no” on Proposal 3. He claims he accidentally shot her — even though she was shot in the back.
Michigan State Police are investigating. Ionia County Prosecutor Kyle Butler told News 8 Monday that he’s waiting for police reports before deciding on whether to file charges.
Richard Harvey acknowledged he could face charges.
“It’s always possible,” he said. “I shot somebody. It was an accident.”
The Michigan State Police investigation into the shooting of the volunteer is ongoing.

Anna Visser, Right to Life of Michigan Communications Director, condemned the shooting.

“No one should fear violence while peacefully exercising their constitutionally protected right to free speech. This 84-year old woman is hardly imposing, standing about 5-feet tall. The idea that shooting this woman is at all excusable is a dangerous claim for Americans across the country who engage in peaceful door-to-door canvassing,” she said.

Visser points out that while Harvey publicly claims the shooting was an “accident,” “Sharon Harvey’s public social media posts raise questions about the motive.”

Mrs. Harvey’s Facebook page reveals very strong opinions on abortion, the issue the volunteer was canvassing about, and vitriol for prolifers and anyone who disagrees with her. Her extensive history of demonstrated hatred for people who disagree with her draws her account into question,” she said.

Right to Life of Michigan adds:
No one should fear violence while peacefully exercising their constitutionally protected right to free speech. The 84-year old woman is hardly imposing, standing about 5-feet tall. The idea that shooting this woman is at all excusable is a dangerous claim for Americans across the country who engage in peaceful door-to-door canvassing.
Why was a gun pulled on an short, 84-year-old lady?
A look through Sharon Harvey’s public posts on her Facebook page is a sad tour of vitriolic rhetoric being repeated day, after day, after day, for years on end. This is a person who believes—like President Biden and Governor Gretchen Whitmer—that people like the victim who see things differently on abortion or other issues are a grave threat to the republic, who if not confronted and stopped will be shipping people off to concentration camps, will forever end democracy, and let women die left and right because of ectopic pregnancies. She believes people like the victim are basically the Taliban.
What could have stayed a heated political discussion that ended peacefully and was totally forgotten years down the road by these ladies instead culminated with pulling a gun on a small, elderly woman and shooting her. This recklessly irresponsible rhetoric must end, and it must end now before more people are harmed.
The campaign of violence and threats against prolife pregnancy centers has come to Michigan and affected our own organization. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been silent about these terrorist activities, except to continue to repeat “fight like hell” to her followers over and over and over. Governor Whitmer has so far been silent about the shooting and attacks on pregnancy centers.
If Governor Whitmer cannot condemn this ongoing campaign of violence or the climate of violent rhetoric she contributes to daily, she should resign in shame as the leader of our state.
Enough is enough.
The 84-year-old victim of the shooting said investigators have told her she was shot once, and the bullet passed through her shoulder to her back. She said the shot dazed her, she got in her car and drove to the police, fearing she would be shot again by Mr. Harvey.

Mark Houck’s Family Reveals Shocking Details of FBI Raid on Their Home for Protesting Abortion

National | Mary Margaret Olohan | Feb 17, 2023 | 10:37AM | Washington, DC

Mark Houck’s children were startled awake by a loud banging on their door.

The older girls looked out the window, saw flashing lights, and ran out to the landing to see what was going on.

The little boys sat up in their beds, sleepy and startled.

Mark Houck Jr. rushed to the stair railing as questions raced through his mind. “Is someone trying to break into the house? Is it someone upset with my dad? Why would someone be coming to our house to arrest my dad?”

Below them, down in the entryway, stood their father.

Their mother was on her way down the stairs.

Crowded on the front porch and the front lawn were about 15 FBI agents, with guns pointed at their parents. It was around 7 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022.

“They were all the way lined down my driveway,” the children’s father said. “I had agents on my porch with long guns.”

Eva, the oldest sister, shared that Mark Jr. tried to order his siblings to go back to their rooms. Terrified at the spectacle before her, she said she just couldn’t leave.

Little Teresa told me that she wanted to rush at them and yell, “You can’t take my dad!” She didn’t say that, though she did push past her older brother and run down the stairs to her mother.

“I woke up and the girls were outside the door crying,” remembered 9-year-old Joshua. “And I asked them what was wrong and they didn’t answer, and I looked down the stairs and I saw guns pointing at Mommy and Daddy.”

“Were you scared?” I asked him.

“Yeah,” he responded, as his little brother Augustine nodded shyly. Multiple family members shared that Augustine has had nightmares and has acted out behaviorally ever since that September morning.

“I was shaking,” said Ryan-Marie, their mother. “I didn’t even know why they were there to arrest him.”

Mark and Ryan-Marie believe they were targeted by President Joe Biden’s Justice Department in an effort to intimidate, silence, and scare the family for their pro-life work—praying outside abortion clinics for the women headed inside to abort their unborn babies.

In early February, our Daily Signal team went to the Houck’s Pennsylvania home to hear about that day when the DOJ arrested Mark, charging him with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act.

Mark pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. His legal team argued that the DOJ was violating the Constitution by engaging in “viewpoint discrimination” and “selective prosecution,” violating the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the First Amendment’s protection for the free exercise of religion.

The FACE Act charges stemmed from a 2021 incident outside a Philadelphia-based Planned Parenthood where Mark pushed an abortion clinic volunteer who was repeatedly harassing his son (Mark Jr). Local authorities ultimately dismissed the matter—until the Biden DOJ re-upped it in response to the overturn of Roe v. Wade.

When Mark found himself confronted by FBI agents, guns pointed at him (and later at his wife, as she made her way down the stairs), his first thought was to protect his children.

“Stay calm,” he said he told the agents as he opened the door and showed his hands. “I have seven babies in here. Please, stay calm.”

There were 15 marked and unmarked vehicles on his property, Mark said.

When he asked what was going on, the agents reportedly told him, “You know why we are here.”

“I had to gather my faculties,” Mark said. Then he responded.

“Oh, you’re here because I rescue babies.”

Almost involuntarily, he added: “You wouldn’t be here if the Trump administration was in the White House.”

Mark says they all “kind of looked down” at this remark, and no one said anything.

Then Ryan-Marie arrived at the door, demanding, “Do you have a warrant for his arrest?”

Mark said that agent CJ Jackson (the lead agent on the case who was present at the trial) told her, “We are taking him with or without a warrant.” Ryan-Marie continued to press the agents, as their children began crying and screaming, about why they were taking her husband.

Mark wanted the agents and their guns out of his house and away from his children as fast as possible. “What do you want?” He asked them. “What do you want me to do?”

When they told him they were going to take him down to the station, Mark says he asked if he could put more clothing on (he was wearing a T-shirt and shorts on the chilly September morning), brush his teeth, or grab his rosary. Each of these requests was met with a “no,” though he was ultimately given his rosary.

One agent finally sent Ryan-Marie, who was still demanding a warrant, upstairs to get Mark a sweatshirt. When she returned, they had cuffed him and put him in a vehicle.

“Now I’m thinking there was a possibility that they just wanted to get him away because I was putting up a fight,” she said.

“I was scared for my children who were all screaming and crying, and that was very difficult because my natural inclination would be just to go to them,” she said. “But at the same time, I didn’t know what was happening and I needed to get some information. I just knew enough that they needed documentation.”

“You can’t just take somebody away, you know?” she insisted. “We’re not living in China. You can’t just pull people away from their home for no reason.”

When Ryan-Marie came downstairs, her husband was gone. Jackson, that lead agent, yelled to her from the driveway that he was getting her the warrant. There were still officers with guns on the porch, she said, and her children were sill screaming and crying.

“I’m standing at the door and I had a child under my arm and trying to tell the other children, ‘Please be quiet,’ because I couldn’t hear.”

Jackson brought her the warrant, a copy of which was obtained by The Daily Signal, but Ryan-Marie says he ripped off just the first page. The FBI agent reportedly told Ryan-Marie that Mark would likely be arranged that day.
Then the agents left.

Ryan-Marie was shaking. But she had to be brave for the children. They were supposed to go to their homeschool co-op that day and, hoping to give the children a sense of normalcy, Ryan-Marie packed them into the car and took them there.
Mark says he chatted in a friendly fashion with the authorities who drove him to the station.

They later “tightly” shackled him at his waist and at his ankles, he said, forcing him to “shimmy” his feet as he walked. Mark also said they chained him to a table for six hours in a small room, and at this point, he “fully entered into the peace of Christ.”

“I was at the foot of Calvary,” he said. “I was there with Jesus. I was totally consoled.”

Mark’s descriptions of the ordeal generally dwelt lightly on how he was treated, often focusing on his interactions with the authorities. But he strongly emphasized that when he was brought down to the U.S. Marshals, he was “treated like a dog” and “a convicted criminal.”

“The U.S. Marshals handle prisoner transfer,” he explained. “They are used to dealing with felons and so I was treated as such. Very curt in demeanor and rude in tone. There was no humanity. You were treated less than human with no dignity. While I was only there for about 30 minutes, I felt like I was already convicted of my alleged crime(s).”

By the time authorities had finished fingerprinting him and their business, it as about eight or 10 hours later. He was reunited with his family around 3 o’clock that day.

Mark was charged with violating two counts of the FACE Act. If convicted, he faced 11 years in prison.

On Jan. 6, 2022, the DOJ offered his lawyers a plea deal. Mark described the attitude as “we’ll make this a slap on the wrist” if he plead guilty—“We can spare you the trial and you can have your normal life back.”

His answer to such an offer was “always going to be no,” Mark said. Ryan-Marie backed him. He knew his wife wouldn’t let him come home if he took such a “cowardly” deal.

Mark was also aware that the pro-life movement needed case law on the topic moving forward in order to protect the advocates praying outside abortion clinics.

“I don’t want sidewalk counselors to have to deal with this,” he said.

Represented by the Thomas More Society, Mark went to trial. A jury declared him not guilty of the FACE Act charges in late January.

“We took on Goliath—the full might of the United States government—and won,” his attorney Peter Breen said that day. “The jury saw through and rejected the prosecution’s discriminatory case, which was harassment from Day One. This is a win for Mark and the entire pro-life movement. The Biden Department of Justice’s intimidation against pro-life people and people of faith has been put in its place.”

But the ordeal has left a permanent mark on the Houck family.

“The children are the true victims,” Mark said, “and after the arrest, they were traumatized. And they’re still traumatized ’till this day.”

Each of the children described to us just how much the arrest, and their subsequent fears about their father, affected them.

“I think about it a lot. Especially when I sleep at night,” Teresa told me. “Something I do is I retrace my steps, if we had a really good day, and it makes me feel better.”

Smushed into an arm chair with Eva and her baby sister Imelda, Teresa also told me she wants an apology from the government.

“For doing this to us,” she said. “You shouldn’t just come to someone’s house like that and just do that to people. It’s not right.”

The children were scared of Fridays for a good bit, the family told me. That was the day of the week that their father was arrested. Now that it has been months since the arrest, and Mark has been cleared of the charges, they are beginning to feel better.

In our interviews, Mark Jr. dwelt on the suffering that his family has been put through in recent months. He believes that his father was targeted by the Biden DOJ for his work protecting the unborn.

“I think my Dad was targeted this way because the Biden administration doesn’t like what my dad does and is against everything my dad does,” he said.

“I’m proud of my dad,” he said simply.

Ryan-Marie doesn’t know what the future holds for her children or for her family. But she and her husband are both looking toward the future with cheerful optimism.

“There’s still a lot of healing that needs to take place,” she said of the children, adding with a laugh, “They do play ‘FBI, open up’ a lot more than they used to.”

Last week, Mark attended the State of the Union as the guest of Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa. He also took his family back to the abortion clinic in Philadelphia where this all began, and as a family, they thanked God for their deliverance and prayed for the unborn.

Those seven children watched as their father was torn from his home, and then they watched him walk free. Now they will continue to fight for life with him.

“I hope they grow up and remember how courageous their father was,” Ryan-Marie shared emotionally. “I hope they remember the faith that we had. That God did not abandon us and was with us every step.”

“I hope they just remember the truth prevailed.”
