Has anyone planted a fall garden? I never have but would like to try it this year. I'm in south central Oklahoma zone 7. I would like to plant Turnips, beats and some potatoes. I have no idea when I should plant. Any incite would be appreciated. Garden is 50x70. Would put potatoes and beats in rows and broadcast the turnips over the remainder mixed in with a cover crop.
I am in suburban Memphis, also Zone 7.
My early fall garden was planted in the first week of September. I planted baby transplants of lettuce, cabbage and broccoli at that time.
I am harvesting one head of romaine or buttercrunch lettuce for the salad bowl every day right now. The cabbage and broccoli are still developing heads right now. I should begin harvesting these at the beginning of next week, and should continue to harvest cabbage and broccoli through the remainder of the month.
There is enough time left to put in greens to over winter. When I pull what lettuce is still remaining in the garden, I will broadcast some turnip green seeds in the soil.. They can grow over the winter, and I can harvest them in late winter or early spring.
You might be able to plant some greens or something this late.
Or just get the soil ready for an early spring planting.
