An F-35 stealth fighter jet disappeared on Sunday afternoon following a mid-flight "mishap," Joint Base Charleston wrote on X.

Joint Base Charleston continued, "The pilot ejected safely," but said, "If you have any information that may help our recovery teams locate the F-35."

We’re working with @MCASBeaufortSC to locate an F-35 that was involved in a mishap this afternoon. The pilot ejected safely. If you have any information that may help our recovery teams locate the F-35, please call the Base Defense Operations Center at 843-963-3600.

According to local media WCSC, the "incident involved a Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort F-35B Lighting II jet from Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing."

A search and rescue effort appears to be underway.

It probably crashed in the middle of nowhere and the tracking pieces are probably busted preventing easy location. It is not uncommon to take years to find crashed aircraft...

MCAS Beaufort. What a beautiful, old timey military base. GREAT seafood in the area and Gullah is still spoken here and there. The Low Country is old slave plantation territory. Lots of swamp land.
That F-35 is either in the Atlantic off the end of the runway or it went into a swamp and it will take a week to find it, much less dig it out.

I am constantly amazed at the things I learn here. Thanks.

From Wikipedia:
The Gullah are an African American ethnic group who predominantly live in the Lowcountry region of the U.S. states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida within the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. They are descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo, and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast.01 The nature of their enslavement on isolated island and coastal plantations created a unique culture with deep African retentions that are clearly visible in the Gullah Geechee people’s distinctive arts, crafts, foodways, music, and language.1 The Gullah Geechee language is a unique, creole language spoken in the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It began as a simplified form of communication among people who spoke many different languages including European slave traders, slave owners, and diverse, African ethnic groups.1 The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor was created to call attention to the historic and cultural contributions of the Gullah Geechee people.0

That transmitter has to survive the crash...
ELT's are built like bricks. They look like bricks. The one in my old Cessna was an orange plastic box-the battery was encased in what felt like concrete. For light aircraft those things weigh something on the order of 10 pounds. They can survive crashes, fires you name it an ELT will survive.

And they (at the time) transmitted on the our father channel-121.5 and 243.0.

It only works if it is in good maintenance condition...

Pilot ejected after ‘mishap’ involving F-35, search for missing plane ongoing
Pilar Briggs

1–2 minutes

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Joint Base Charleston says they are looking for an F-35 plane after a ‘mishap’ involving a pilot being safely ejected from it on Sunday.

The incident involved a Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort F-35B Lighting II jet from Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 501 with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, according to public affairs specialist Jeremy Huggins.

Huggins says the pilot was safely ejected and taken to a hospital where they are in stable condition.

The joint base also says they are working with the Marine Corps and the Federal Aviation Administration to find the F-35 that was involved. They say the focus is north of the joint base, around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion.

If anyone has any information that may help locate the F-35, you are asked to call the Base Defense Operations Center at 843-963-3600.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates

Wait. What? The sentence looks like it was written by a foreigner. Or just bad journalism. Hard to tell. Oh, I guess the pilot could be a "they" these days, even in the military.

It all makes me tired. I should go to bed and just cover my head.

At least the pilot got out somewhat safely, considering he's ? in the hospital. That's good news.

That's a heck of a request for a small plane on autopilot without it's pilot.

"The public is asked to cooperate with military authorities as the recovery effort continues"

reminds me of that earlier discussion about single pilot and zero pilot planes being the wave of the future.

..No thank You!

A story rolls around occasionally about the "tweet" ( a 2 seat trainer) . The instructor pilot ejected upon loss of control.

The newer student pilot regained control and successfully landed the aircraft. Too dumb to know to quit. Too brave to admit defeat. :)

That old story may have made its way through time-bomb. I suspect it would have happened in the 80s or 90s if true.
