EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters battled massive flames raging near storage tanks at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, which sent thick black clouds of smoke into the air.

With multiple fire agencies responding to the scene, firefighters used massive quantities of water and foam to make quick work of the flames, extinguishing them in less than an hour.

The flames touched power lines, sending off big electrical flashes and sending some lines to the ground. The fire was also threatening storage tanks at the refinery.

The fire came after a reported explosion in the area around 10:30 p.m..

With smoke blowing into nearby residential areas, the fire department asked people in the area to close their windows and shelter in place. No evacuations were ordered.

The refinery, built in 1911, is located at 324 W. El Segundo Boulevard.

According to Chevron, the refinery is the largest on the West Coast, processing more than 274,000 barrels of crude every day. The property covers 1,000 acres and has a storage capacity of 12. 5 million barrels in 150 storage tanks larger than 30 feet in diameter.

The refinery is just south of Los Angeles International Airport. It did not immediately appear the smoke interfered with flights.

Refinery officials released a statement addressing the blaze.

"Chevron's primary concern is to ensure the safety of its employees and the surrounding community and the environment. Chevron is working very closely with the local agencies to ensure that we meet those expectations in responding to this incident," the statement said, in part.

Multiple fire agencies were called in to assist Chevron and El Segundo firefighters, including Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach firefighters.

El Segundo police said Vista Del Mar would remain closed due to downed power lines. It was unclear how long the road would be closed.

Crews Douse Intense Fire At Chevron Refinery In El*Segundo

October 17, 2017 11:05 PM

EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA)*— Fire crews raced Tuesday night to an intense fire at a refinery just south of Los Angeles International Airport in El Segundo.

The Chevron and El Segundo Fire Departments were fighting the fire on the west side of the Chevron refinery.

Vista Del Mar was shut down between 45th and Grand Avenue.

Officials were asking nearby residents to shut the doors and windows of their homes because smoke was blowing into residential areas.

The largest refinery on the West Coast supplies 20 percent of gas to Southern California and 40 percent of jet fuel to nearby LAX Airport.

Crews were able to extinguish all visible flame by 11:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Funny, more and more excuses to raise the price of gas lately; Iraq/Kurds, LA platform fire and now a Cali fire. For some odd reason gas shot up 7 cents here. Don't know why. Guess it was profit time for the makers, probably - Christmas is coming and the dependents will need the latest iCrap.

L.A.B.

Goodness before greatness.
Industrial accident or sabotage?

Glad to hear that the fire was quickly extinguished.

Consider the timing... and no less than two weeks ago while my keen eye dealt with driving, my wife noticed four mil-types in camo uniform inspecting what looked like weak points of entry through a chain length fence near the fuel tank farm South of El Segundo about 1 and a half miles from the Port of L.A.

Appeared to be our people in broad daylight inspecting.

Looks like from the photos I have seen, a small area was affected possibly near one of the flares. It looked like maybe piping or a pump failed causing a leak which then lit off.
