‘Error Rates’ For Food Stamp Payments Soar To New Heights Under Biden Admin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) erroneously overpaid in nearly 10% of food stamp benefit payouts in the 2022 fiscal year, according to new data.

The department’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) overpaid in a total of 9.84% of benefit payments in the 2022 fiscal year, as compared to data from the 2019 fiscal year which had a 6.18% overpayment rate, according to the USDA. Some states had higher rates of erroneous payments than others, with Maryland overpaying in 32.65% of payments, Tennessee overpaying in 19.04% of payments and Alaska overpaying the highest at 56.69% of the time.

“The national error rate as reported today is unacceptable and threatens the integrity of the program,” read a Full Committee on Agriculture statement from Friday. “We urge governors and administrators to promptly establish corrective action plans and continue to work with USDA to address the root causes of these errors to improve their program operations, remain accountable to the taxpayer, and most importantly, ensure that benefits are targeted to the people who are the most in need.”

An error is counted if it is above or below the target payment by at least $48.

The USDA found that the total payment error rate across all states was 11.54%, which included 9.84% of cases being overpayments and 1.7% of cases being underpayments. SNAP gave out nearly $114 billion in total assistance to low and no-income people for the purpose of food in the 2022 fiscal year.

Data from the Office of Management and Budget found that $528 billion was improperly paid by the federal government in the Biden administration’s first two years, according to a report from Open The Books. In the report, the USDA was found to have made $1.9 billion in total improper payments for the 2022 fiscal year.

The Biden administration previously gave $6 million in grants to state agencies for the purpose of advancing “racial equity” in their SNAP programs. The grant requires employees who administer food stamps to undergo training to help participants “gain skills, education, training, and experience that lead to good, stable jobs and greater economic stability.”

The USDA did not immediately respond to a request to comment by the DCNF.

I frequently run into that same problem over categorization. So much fits these days.

This latest problem with food stamps is just nuts. 10% sounds almost reasonable until you realize it's almost $12 billion bucks.

And don't forget that "normal" payments already have 10% built into the agency's yearly budget for fraud. So it's a lot bigger than this news implies. 20% (1/5th) of the food stamp program's yearly spending is likely fraud is this story is correct.

Did the feds make drugs and alcohol EBT eligible?

Muse....

Yes, even way back when they had actually food coupons/stamp books.

Works like this... many who receive EBT cards today or coupons from long ago, the exchange rate for cash has been about 2 to 1. Or higher.

Meaning for every 2 dollars+ worth of food stamps or on loaded EBT card, they will exchange for one dollar cash or one dollars worth of drugs.

Soda like mnt dew today is considered food because it has 1% fruit juice they say. So todayS EBT will buy you soda. That's as bad for you as smoking.

As soon as I saw the title, I wanted to know the definition of "error rates" but this "erroneously overpaid in nearly 10% of food stamp benefit payouts" answers some of that.

So was this data collected by external audits of the program?

More likely the JB SJW Cabal was the root cause and some "Civil Servant", worried about their income & pensions, saw the actual size of the "error" and acted to protect themselves by exposing the issue.

I think it's pretty well settled the SJW Marxists will do anything to put more $$$ into the hands of their constituents while helping to consume all available resources on income equity strategies.

That's $12,000,000,000 that should have gone to the UKR's.
Right. Since they only found a 6 Billion dollar error a couple of weeks ago. But hey give them time, it's just a matter of switching columns in accounting, and it's done.

Scuttlebutt from locals has me suspecting staffing issues. Since Covid, demand on government services spiked hugely.

One of our deputies was telling us that our courts in this area went from well-ordered to impossibly backlogged, and all they got to deal with it was new notebooks.

Our post office ladies seem on the verge of spitting on their hands, hoisting the black flag, and beginning to slit throats.

Throw in the painfully slow hiring and onboarding for gov employees, and yeah. I would be willing to bet too few people trying to get through too much work has something to do with this error rate.
