Erdogan's promised Turkish military operation in northeast Syria has begun, as confirmed by regional media and video footage. On Monday night Turkish fighter jets commenced bombing the Semelka Border Crossing in far northeast Syria on the border with Iraq.

Both Hezbollah-affiliated al-Mayadeen television channel and Israeli media are also reporting Turkish jets have attacked Kurdish targets in northern Syria.

This as the US claimed to have effectively shut down Northern Syria airspace to Turkey, and while Russian jets have reportedly been observed patrolling southern Syria, presumably to ensure the Turkish incursion comes nowhere near Syrian Army positions. The Semelka crossing since 2016 acted as a key SDF supply point between Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq and the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.

Turkey's Anadolu Agency also reports Turkish officers have been expelled from the Joint Air Operations Center which was the heart of coordinated anti-ISIL activities among the allies, meaning US surveillance and reconnaissance data are no longer shared with Ankara. In northeast Syria a rapid US withdrawal from border observation posts at Tel Abyad and Ras al Ain has reportedly already occurred, paving the way for the imminent Turkish incursion.

Citing Pentagon spokeswoman Carla Gleason, Anadolu noted, however:

She stopped short of saying that the air space has been shut down to Turkey, but noted "if you’re not on the air tasking order, it’s really hard to coordinate flights in that area."

We might note that when it comes to the Kurds, Erdogan has never suffered qualms about having to "coordinate" his actions with allies.

It appears Trump's dire Twitter warning to "obliterate" Ankara's economy, directed both at the Turks and at US hawks who accuse the president throwing Kurdish partner forces to the wolves, was ineffective, given by all indicators a Turkish aerial campaign has commenced.

Trump warned earlier in the day Monday, “As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!).”

“They must, with Europe and others watch over the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100 percent of the ISIS Caliphate,” he added. “It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!” the president finished with.

Meanwhile Turkey's military spokesman has ominously warned that the army will move forward to "correct the demographics changed by YPG in Northeast Syria" and further that "Turkey won’t allow ISIS to return in any shape or form."

Considering Erdogan already stood down US pressures on acquiring the Russian S-400 air defense system, he appears more willing to call Trump's bluff at this point.

As Syria's Kurds have warned from the beginning, and as the military spokesman's words darkly imply, it appears Turkey's campaign will be toward full-on ethnic cleansing of Kurds from the border regions.

Turkey attacks Kurds, SDF in Iraq, Syria as U.S. withdraws



The attacks come after the US announced that it would withdraw from Syria as Turkey prepares for a military operation to create a "safe zone" in northern Syria.

Turkish forces carried out attacks against Kurdish forces and the anti-Assad Syrian Democratic Forces militia in Syria and Iraq near the Turkish border on Monday evening.

Turkish forces attacked SDF positions in the city of al-Malikiyah in the Hasakah area in northern Syria, according to Syrian state news agency SANA.




Earlier on Monday, the United States announced that it would be withdrawing from Syria.

Turkey will move forward with its long-planned military operation to create what it calls a "safe zone" in northern Syria and U.S. forces will not support or be involved in it, the White House press secretary announced early Monday morning.


"The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial 'Caliphate,' will no longer be in the immediate area," said the White House press secretary on Monday morning.


The SDF withdrew from an oil field in the Deir ez-Zor area and headed towards the Turkish border on Monday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The SDF lead protests against Iranian-backed militias in the Deir ez-Zor area in September.

The SOHR recorded a high alert level among the SDF in the Hasakah area due to concerns about a possible imminent Turkish invasion.

The Turkish Air Force "neutralized" three PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) members in northern Iraq on Monday, according to the Turkish National Defense Ministry, reported the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

The attacks were carried out in the Gara region near the Turkey-Iraq border.

"Turkey’s unprovoked attack on our areas will have a negative impact on our fight against ISIS and the stability and peace we have created in the region in the recent years," said the SDF in a press statement. "As the Syrian Democratic Forces, we are determined to defend our land at all costs."

Iran's foreign minister on Monday backed Syrian sovereignty and opposed military action in a phone call with his Turkish counterpart, state media said, after a U.S. pull-back of troops in northeast Syria appeared to open the way to a Turkish attack.

"(Mohammad Javad) Zarif, opposed military action and emphasized respect for Syria's territorial integrity and national sovereignty and the need to fight terrorism and bring stability and security to Syria," state broadcaster IRIB said, about the phone call with Turkey's Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Closure of Syrian Schools: Another Bleak Sign for Christians in Syria | National Review

Militiamen expelled teachers for declining to follow a Kurdish-nationalist curriculum.

Eyala Saadi lives in Qamishli, a town in northeastern Syria that was founded in the 1920s after thousands of Assyrians fled the 1915 genocide in neighboring Turkey. Eyala is 27 years old and works as a protection programs officer for a humanitarian organization. She has a degree in law from the University of Aleppo, located about 260 miles from her town. While Aleppo, the largest city in Syria, is infamous for having been the scene of large-scale devastation and carnage that earned it the moniker “Syria’s Stalingrad” among combatants, Eyala’s much smaller hometown of Qamishli and its Assyrian Christian residents have faced a different type of conflict. Theirs has lasted since 1915 but has remained a struggle fought outside the spotlight shone on the brutal fighting in larger cities.

Qamishli is a Christian center of Syria — the Assyrian Christians are ethnically different from Syria’s Arab Christians, but they’ve suffered from similar threats of persecution on the basis of their ethnicities and religion. Qamishli’s pre-war population was about 40,000, with 25,000 belonging to the ancient Syriac Orthodox Church. Today, half of Qamishli’s Assyrian Christians are gone.

Eyala told National Review that many Christians have left Qamishli for other parts of Syria or even Europe. “They emigrated after many explosions in their own neighborhood, because no one will protect them,” she said. But Assyrians are also facing what Eyala describes as a quieter persecution, one that isn’t always as physically violent as bombs, though it could repeat the ethnic erasure that prompted Assyrians to flee from Turkey to Qamishli a century ago.

In early August, reports came out of Derik, a heavily Assyrian-populated town in the same governorate as Qamishli: The Kurdish self-administration in Syria, a self-declared governing body in northern Syria that isn’t recognized by any international state or organization, ordered the closing of schools for failing to register for a license and for rejecting the new curriculum approved by the Education Authority. A similar notice was issued to schools in the nearby town of Derbesiye.

Only a few weeks later, private Assyrian schools in Qamishli were also targeted. Militiamen from the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (the PYD, the Syrian face of PKK, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, a Marxist-Leninist group based in Turkey and Iraq that is classified by the U.S. as a terror organization) and the Sutoro (the Kurdish-aligned Christian forces) entered private Assyrian schools and expelled all administrators and teachers. When the school staff refused to turn over their keys, the militiamen broke the existing locks and replaced them. Hundreds of residents staged protests, tearing down signs that read “school closed” and breaking the new locks. Teachers were expelled, and hundreds of local residents protested that same afternoon. Children held up signs reading “Don’t deprive us of our right to education” and “We want our schools, our freedom, and our childhood.” Priests led a crowd of residents carrying Syrian flags, often chanting “We will remain Assyrians and die in this land” as the Sutoro forces fired gunshots into the sky to intimidate the protestors.

These private schools have been administered by the Syriac Orthodox Church Diocese since 1935, serving Assyrian, Armenian, Arab, and Kurdish communities. They’ve offered classes in Assyrian as a liturgical language while following the Syrian government’s curriculum. Schools run by the Syriac Orthodox Church were unable to apply for the licenses because they rejected the proposed Kurdish curriculum, which has nefarious motives, according to local Christians: The Kurdish self-administration that is attempting to foist the curriculum on students is seeking to erase Christians’ existence in order to create Western Kurdistan through ahistorical accounts and Kurdish-nationalist propaganda that isn’t recognized in higher-education institutions within Syria. Students who attended schools with this curriculum effectively couldn’t attend universities within greater Syria or beyond because this curriculum isn’t recognized anywhere outside the territory that the self-administration is attempting to govern. As a result, parents would have to leave Qamishli to enroll their children in schools that universities would recognize.

“Every Assyrian and Christian knows the self-administration is using the curriculum as a weapon to implement their ideological end goals,” Eyala said. “Bishops and their members all protested — we don’t accept their curriculum. They want to achieve a Kurdistan region in Syria like they did in Iraq by driving us out.”

With the advent of the Syrian war in 2011, Christians of all ethnic backgrounds within the country were at risk of violence, especially those who were located in territory that ISIS controlled. Since then, estimates show that nearly a million Christians have left Syria, although many are returning as conditions improve. Assyrians, unfortunately, still face discrimination and fear for their future.

According to Max Joseph, a board member of the Assyrian Policy Institute, the Kurdish self-administration is actively harming the prospects of Assyrian survival in Syria through its attempted overhaul of the education system, forced conscription in the Kurdish-aligned YPG (People’s Protection Units, a militia), parallel tax systems that double the tax Assyrians pay, and extensive harassment and intimidation of Assyrians who resist their policies.

Most recently, Isa Rashid, the education director in Qamishli, was badly beaten outside his home on September 22 by two men, supposedly from the Dawronoye, for rejecting the Kurdish self-administration’s curriculum. The Dawronoye is the leftist, Assyrian militia that operates under the PYD and PKK and likewise serves to advance Kurdish-nationalist interests.

“The PYD has proxy Christian affiliates and placeholders because it’s very important for optics, but these aren’t representative of the unrest and distrust among Christians and the Kurdish self-administration,” Joseph told me.

Caught defenseless in the tangles of another conflict, the Assyrian Christians in Qamishli are often overlooked and forgotten, their communities dwindling and their hopes for peaceful and prosperous futures receding as well.

“I think our suffering has been overlooked and the Assyrian case has been forgotten,” Eyala responded when I asked her about the history of the Assyrians in Syria since the genocide of 1915. “Maybe because we don’t have a military and are not strong financially, and we don’t have our own country or place. We’ve emigrated to different places to escape in the diaspora, and the media don’t give our experience a spotlight. All the media talk about is the Kurds, even though their self-administration has done horrible things to us.”

The likelihood that Eyala remains in Qamishli is slim. Nearly everyone in her family used to live in Qamishli, but most have now emigrated to other parts of Syria or to the United States. Her childhood friends have also all left. Only her mother, father, and two siblings remain in the town. She is considering moving to another governorate of Syria because there is no future in Qamishli for Assyrians.

“If we struggle with the ideological policies, why should we stay? It’s not our place anymore.”

The Assyrian Christians have relied on education to ensure that the genocides their people have suffered — both in 1915 and during the Simele massacre of 1933 — are not forgotten by their children and by the international community. The Assyrians in the East rely on Assyrians in the West to take advantage of their freedoms to create awareness of their plight, in hopes of pressuring leaders to consider which routes of aid would benefit these groups that are facing extinction after 6,000 years of existence.

“Western activists have an opportunity to raise their voice and demand that the public see what is happening to us,” Eyala said. “We’re afraid for our future, and we’re relying on our strength but also on the West.”

My Fellow Americans:

Four points. !). Our Commander-in-Chief (CINC) is keeping a promise that made many veterans and active duty personnel rush to the polls to support him. 2). Donald Trump is the first CINC in my lifetime who is actually telling the military/industrial complex to sod off! 3). Those of us who have spent many years dealing with many of the groups in the muslim world know the real Kurds, and know they are only allies with infidels when it suits their purposes. 4). The veterans of this nation are fast reaching a very dangerous place regarding corruption/incompetence in the political community and the media. I am afraid that not even the CINC can calm them!

Note: The message below was submitted earlier. Considering the absolutely criminal/cowardly behavior of many in political community and the media think it is appropriate to remind Americans that many of the military community are growing very weary!

America’s Military History: Never to win a war save the revolution via leadership and then only one, that being via logistics! The rest only served to enrich the elites among them with power and wealth, while stripping their youth of their lives and/or souls!

First Mr. Kennedy, then Mr. Johnson, and finally Mr. Nixon; none wanting to hear the cries of those returning to their homes un-welcomed, nor the silence of those left in the jungles! Then Mr. Bush (the younger) in revenge for his father paid us no heed as he rushed into Iraq! Next, Mr. Obama surrounded by his brilliant young advisors so blinded by their arrogance and ignorance only to bring rise to un-imagined horrors. Now comes Mr. Trump with his Commander-in-Chief tasks divided for having to fight multitudes of self-serving cowards at home, while facing an enemy sworn to serve an unseen master to the death!

The only prayer left to those of us who have shared the horrors of war is that God welcomes our brothers and sisters who’s souls have gone on to be with him, while we do not neglect those who still walk the earth today with souls just as dead!

Its time we get out of Syria. Pull the troops home from endless no win shit wars in places most of us have never heard of and can barely pronounce. When you enter a war, enter to win and not to create stalemate.

I'm with you Meadowlark. Trump should publicly say that when he sees his detractors on this issue bring their sons and grandsons to Marine Recruiting for placement on the front line he would rethink his decision. Enough of our sons' blood for these never ending Mideast wars.
