Tesla has an uphill battle when it comes to expanding one of its factories to double the facility's production.

Elon Musk and Tesla have hit a road bump regarding a long-planned Gigafactory Berlin’s expansion as residents in the plant’s location fiercely opposed the move in a survey.

While the vote is non-binding, its results may throw a wrench in the electric vehicle maker’s extension plans for its German facility as it will need to secure land from the municipality, Grünheide, Brandenburg, which sits almost an hour outside of Berlin.

The community’s vote centered on Tesla’s goal to expand its plant by 420 acres. Tesla submitted plans for their factory’s extension last summer.

Since Tesla’s submission, locals and environmentalists have expressed concerns about water supply and deforesting requirements, including the electric vehicle (EV) company needing to clear over 247 acres of forest from the small municipality, Electrek reports.

Tesla would additionally:

Modernize its existing facility
Build a water recycling plant
Manufacture a second production facility
Implement a battery recycling plant
Make a freight yard, warehouses, and company kindergarten

These additions aim to double Giga Berlin’s production capacity to 1 million annual units, according to Teslarati.

An overwhelming 70 percent of locals voted against Tesla’s plans through the survey.

However, some of Grünheide’s youth feel Tesla’s expansion can benefit their futures.

Silas Heineken, 17, Moritz Tezky, 16, and Tariq Löber, 18, all told The New York Times that they’d “definitely” be interested in a Tesla traineeship or job.

Silas said: “We realized how easy it is for people to be against something, to reject something new,” according to The New York Times.

This group clarified that their municipality’s “general opposition” to the expansion was most bothersome.
