See? Every rant I’ve ranted borne out not two hours after I ranted them.

People don’t read the thread. People don’t bother trying to look up a thread. People want to be led by the nose over and over AND OVER. It gets more tedious than you can possibly imagine. All I ask is that people:

- read threads

- learn the software (don’t have to be experts, but for God’s sake spend some EFFORT)

- be able to search (I bet most of you, if dropped into the advanced search page, wouldn’t know the first thing about how to use it. Yet, it only takes about ten minutes to learn how. But that’s time most people won’t spend.)

For whatever reason, tonight, CM’s obvious unwillingness to search just struck me very wrong.

Use the software. Try to learn it (there are tutorials on the web.) TRY THINGS.

Then, reach out with what you tried. Detail it. I’ll make the exact same attempt. If I also am unsuccessful, I’ll point people in the right direction. But really, butt wiping isn’t part of my job description, and after over 20 years of it, I kinda snapped tonight. That’s on me. But using this software and employing READING COMPREHENSION, is on you all. (And yes, I “skip” things in posts too. I’m no better than anyone else.)

Like I said upthread, I could explain a topic a THOUSAND TIMES, but less than five minutes after the thousandth time, you can BET YOUR PRIZE HONEY BADGER that someone will ask, “how do I ….”

No one can keep their cool all the time under those conditions, particularly when I go above and beyond in explaining this stuff thousands of times.

Go look at the OP of this thread. If you can force yourself, please actually read it. Would you, after reading that OP, opine that I answered every possible question on this topic? I’d like an answer to that question. (Please include @Green Co. ’s post 5)

Sorry for flipping out. I don’t really know why I did. It felt like getting kicked in the ass one too many times.

A lot of us have been conditioned to roll the scroll because of too many "thank you" and "prayers sent" posts. A lot of good info gets lost in that fog.

Then break your conditioning. That’s not my problem either. You all need to know when to stop scrolling and start reading.

(sigh)

now who's not reading?

I DID search.

For over 30 minutes.

In the wee small hours of this morning.

I am not an IT professional.

And I fully admit to having trouble with the search engine here.

Odd that I never seem to have trouble with Google's.

I'm not the only one who's complained the search engine is very hard to use and rather "persnickety" in that if you don't have the terms "just" right you get nowhere.

I used the search terms:

EAS
Emergency Alert
Emergency Alert System

And found threads, but not this one.

I'm just glad to have found it now.

Not "lazy".

Not playing with my "nails" (the only "nails" I have are the ones I use to HAMMER into the fences or barn when I'm fixing them)

Just not an "IT" -- not "techyy"

And not trying to be a smart-whatever---just asking for help.

Sorry.

See, here’s the deal. THIS search engine is not the “old” search engine from the vbulletin days. This search works great. I paid extra to get it.

Google works because they’ve spent literally BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, and have tens-of-thousands of servers, and a staff of thousands of programmers. You can’t seriously be comparing us to them, right? And if you are, I expect a million dollar check from you next week to begin our search engine build-out.

You didn’t use advanced, did you? You’ve never used the new advanced search, have you? You don’t know what tags are, and don’t care either. Right?

Boss, ah, could ya dial it back JUST A TAD? Like back to 9.9??

Yer starting to demonstrate all of the people skills owned by a code rat.

And yeah, my degree IS in Management and a WHOLE LOT of that is People Skills.

(Got a friend who works for an off-price insurance company who is a QUINTESSENTIAL Code Rat and damn proud of it. The Company tried to promote him to a supervisory position and he turned them down. FLAT. They tried to insist and he said You can push this and I can be gone in 2 weeks. They gave him a raise and said we will not speak of this again. He is THAT GOOD a Code Rat.

DEEP BREATHELY!! and try to dial it back JUST a bit.
I understand that your house is NOT real happy right now with where you are physically, and the pups, and all. But ya really need to dial it back a bit... To 9.9 or 9.7 at worst.

Chuck, nothing out front in this software package requires a degree in computer science. But there is a great deal of functionality available. People (myself included BTW) need to take more time to study up on what this software does and how to get a handle on it. The problem is that almost no one wants to put forth the effort. They would rather it all be handed to them, so they can use it once, forget what they were told, and ask again. And again. And again. Multiply that by thousands of members.

I don’t expect or demand that people get computer science degrees. I DO expect that they put forth an honest effort. CM said she spend 30 minutes on it. (First of all, I believe it to be more like five minutes.) Over the course of my career, I’ve had to search on a topic for WEEKS. Over and over, trying different word and phrase combinations and praying that I get a meaningful hit.

CM said she tried three word combinations. It doesn’t take 30 minutes for that. Don’t lie. And definitely don’t whine.

What combinations were used? Was it in advanced search or quick search? “30 minutes.” You betcha. And PM me rather than use the open forum. And once I provide the answers, I expect the person to whom I provided them assist others from that point forward.

I am no one’s life ring. I’m not the person to grab onto to keep yourselves from drowning. Will I help? Eventually. Will I just give you the answers? No. I’ll make you expend some personal effort first. The old “give a man a fish” vs. “teach a man to fish.” I did the same for my kids when they were growing up.

I’ll give a person clues; they need to try them. Only after a reasonable effort has been expended can someone expect an answer. But I expect and require actual time and effort be expended. And I’m not going to “dial it back” below that point.

Dennis--I did not and do not "lie".

No, I do NOT know what "tags" are or how to use them. I've seen that term on Facebook, too, and don't know what it means, other than when someone has "tagged" my picture--I think that means they either shared a picture of me, or said they liked it, or identified my picture within a picture of their's. That's at least what I 'think' that means.

I fully ADMITTED that I am NOT "techhy"---I am just a 65 year old lady who didn't even know how to turn a computer ON 25 years ago (and probably would never have felt the NEED for a computer, if it hadn't been for my oldest son being blind and the obvious need for me to LEARN about the technology he would need to survive in the world).

And I do fully understand the "IT" mindset--and it is LIGHT YEARS ahead of me. My middle son is in IT -- and he also has NO patience with my inability to barely understand the difference between "bits" and "bytes", "RAM" and "ROM"--even though he's explained them to me repeatedly. He doesn't even try to explain stuff to me anymore--because it's so frustrating to him to try to explain to me what seems simple as "2 + 2" to him, but to me may as well be quadratic equations.

I said I spent 30 minutes "searching"--not 30 minutes "ON" the search ENGINE.

I tried the 3 phrases on the search engine.
I also looked through every possible (likely) section on the Main page--Resources, Com/Tech Help, Corkboard, then pinned threads such as Situational Awareness and Emergency Contact--but couldn't find it.
By this time I was falling asleep at the computer and finally just gave up and looked to see which Mod was on duty--it was Millwright so I PM'd him about it.
This morning when I got up I didn't see an answer yet, so I posted the thread.

We can't all be as smart as you are, Dennis. (and I mean that as a honest compliment--no sarcasm!) We're all different. I wasn't trying to get on your nerves. I just wanted to update my cell phone # for the EAS--and also to ask when a new test might be done, since Bidet is doing his level best to get this nation into nuclear war.

That is all--no hidden agendas, and not trying to bug you.

sigh

No matter to what extreme I try to drive a thought home, it doesn’t “take” with some people.

1) I am not particularly “smart.” I’ve just been dealing with software so long that I’m sick to death of it.

2) AS I SAID UPTHREAD, every single function of this software is designed to be used by people who ARE NOT computer professionals.

3) how much time, across all the time you’ve been a member, have you actually spent trying to learn ANY software function other than post?

4) do you have Alzheimer’s? (PM me with that answer if you wish)

5) can you drive a car? Are you a hazard on the road? Do you know what the buttons and knobs on your dashboard do? (I want answers to these questions)

My ex’s mother and maternal grandmother never learned to drive, depending instead on the services of their husbands or others. That’s why I asked.

Honestly, I just don’t buy the “helpless little old lady” excuse. In my first ever LDS ward, there was a very elderly lady (85 years old) whose husband passed. Once she got past grieving, she started taking computer classes. Until then she’d never used a computer. In the space of a few months, she became pretty good. And she was a very “old school” Mormon wife. Are you telling me you’re less competent than she?

I simply cant hold your hand for the amount of time you want me to devote to you, particularly since you said your own son has given up trying to teach you. My expectation is that if I teach something, the person(s) being trained will take notes as needed and actually try to assimilate the information being presented. When that is not the case, trying to teach someone becomes extraordinarily trying.

So - if you want help, you need to learn things. Otherwise helping you isn’t worth the emotional drain.

Does that make sense?

I’ve posted on EAS a hundred times. Why didn’t you learn the requirements back when I was doing so?

PERSONAL INFORMATION
Folks, it's been talked about in many places, some as recent as today. When you want to be added or edited, PLEASE include all information asked for.

1. Name. first only will work
2. state of residence
3. cell phone number, up to three
4. service provider for the cell phones
5. email, up to three

Out of a dozen requests I receive, at least nine do not have these requirements. Then I have to message back, sometimes get a partial, then another message. What can be done in 10 minutes ends up taking an hour.
I have changes and need to give you the info:

Would it help, perhaps, to extract the "how to sign up for EAS" information from early in this thread and make it the (a) top pin? It might be easier for people to find or be directed to, and save several minutes of scrolling through frustration on many people's part.

That being said, this is reading like a classic 'something wicked this way comes' stress fest, so I think I'll go check my pantry, since I recently came off a week of no power due to hurricane damage.

You know why it irritated me? Because you’re either lazy, ignorant, or unable to use software. I’m betting it’s the first one. And that pisses me off.

Should I come to your place and wipe your butt for you too? That’s what I used to tell my kids when they didn’t want to try something harder. You’re not 9 years old.

Dennis I know you have a short fuse more so lately than ever, but dang maybe you need a break. I know of at least one long time member who left due to the same crap you're slinging in this thread. Not everyone- especially the older generation- understands how to utilize all the computer tools. I am on the cusp of having to learn things at 56 because I still have to work. I can't imagine being older and not understanding. Then coming here and being degraded and yelled at. It's humiliating. I know the IT guy at my job has the patience of Job because sometimes I ask really dumb questions. If he reacted to me like you did to CM, I would be in angry tears and probably lose my job for my reply.

And before you say it- because you've said it before- no one is asking you to baby anyone. But can you say what you need to in just a little nicer way? Good God man.

Individual tests are not sent.

At some future point in time AFTER Green gets the flurry of recent update requests entered, Dennis will kickoff an EAS test.

Everyone on the list will be contacted based on the information provided. If the information is accurate, they SHOULD receive the test alert. If their information is not correct they will not receive the alert.

If something goes wrong with the “system” sending the alerts it could be a mixed bag, from no one getting the test alert to some people getting it and some not getting it. If it works perfectly, everyone who signed up with accurate information should get the alert.

That’s why we test.

I don’t buy it. As I said before, the 85 year old widow who learned computers well enough to get by in SIX MONTHS puts lie to your statements about oldsters being unable to learn computers.

You’re jumping on me because I’m short with some folks. I’m short with the ones who refused to read the information when it was posted numerous times over the years. They didn’t read it then, and evidently they’ve never used a search engine in their lives. As I said in my rant, this information has been provided at least 50 times. It’s out there to read. Read it. Answer me this: how many times am I supposed to give out this info to people who should’ve read it five years ago or more? “As many times as it takes?”

I tell you what. You can be keeper of the EAS documentation. Every time someone asks, I’ll refer them to you. I’m serious. You willing to take that on?

Don't do that BS of "OK fine, YOU want to do it"? As a matter of fact yes, if Green Co needs help yes I'm more than willing to help. If he/ she (sorry I don't know which) wants to turn it over to me, sure. At least people will be treated decent and not humiliated. Some people can read things over and over and still not comprehend it. You don't know what their level of education is or what learning disabilities they may suffer from. They don't deserve to be called stupid and ignorant.

You wonder why people leave, this is the type of BS people leave over. You want to know why long term members don't want to invite people to join. This is the type of BS they don't want people to see and be a part of. Who wants to be part of a group where they are berated for asking questions- even if it's repetitive?

We have a great family here but you Dennis, can be very toxic. One day you're telling someone they are stupid and ignorant and the next "oh I'll pray for you". I am far from perfect but at least I treat people with decency. I suppose now I'll get kicked to Time Out or worse. But I am calling it as I see it.

Because you’re doing EXACTLY what the others are: selective assimilation.
