Long Valley NJ, this explains a lot. I woke up this morning expecting a quake in long valley California. the Fat Man has been persistent this week.

A friend in Liverpool NY felt it. That's a long ways away.Said it shook her couch and moved her kid's desks away from them. I just ordered the museum putty; ty for posting that inf, you all. I live near a fault that runs under Attica prison (!!), and I DO have EQ insurance on my house. .

That's next to Syracuse, I didn't see anything about it being felt up there.

But what's interesting is it wasn't even that strong at my house 20 miles from the epicenter.

Best I could describe the initial quake was a Chinook hovering overhead.

In the blink of an eye, it will all change. You might get a thirty minute heads up, but don't count on it.

I felt a window rattler back in Philadelphia circa 1967.

President Trump Bedminster Golf Course Was Epicenter of Earthquake that Hit Northeast Region

April 5, 2024 | Sundance | 45 Comments

I suppose there is a bucket of metaphors in here somewhere.

As tens of pencil cups and plates seemingly fell over from the magnitude 4.8 earthquake in New York earlier of Thursday, it was later revealed that President Trump’s Bedminster Golf Course was the epicenter of the quake.

(New York Post) – […] Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster, New Jersey was at the epicenter of the 4.8-magnitude that rattled the New York City area on Friday.

In a rather seismic turn of events, the New York tri-state area on Friday felt the tremors of its most significant earthquake since 1884, shaking the region with a magnitude of 4.8 and surprising many locals in the process.
But what’s even more surprising? The epicenter’s proximity to Donald Trump’s National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The ground-shaking event struck at 10:23 a.m., originating just a stone’s throw away from the luxury golf retreat. (read more)

Saved, to glorify God.
It was shallow, only 2.9 miles depth. Maybe that's why. :shr:
A shallow quake like this one, supposedly is, is felt locally, a deep quake is felt over a greater distance.
You got it backwards.
Something aint right in what they are saying! If it was a
6.8 shallow very shallow quake I could see it felt over an extensive area of 3 states but a 4.8 only 3 miles deep? Never. Unless it was at intersection of three states and really STILL felt only "locally".

Earthquakes on the East Coast and in the Midwest are often felt a long way from the epicenter. It's all about the underlying geology. The geology is very different on the West Coast and earthquakes there aren't felt as far away. I suspect seismic waves through the ground can be just as quirky as sound waves through the air. When Mount St. Helens blew people within just a few miles never heard a thing, yet ships many miles off the coast heard the boom clearly.

They are reporting on it because the last time an earthquake of this magnitude hit on that fault line was 1884.

Chester Arthur was President and Alaska had just become a territory.

That's why it is news. It's rarity, not the damage. However, earthquakes on the east coast, vs the rest of the country cause more damage at lower magnitudes because of the type of bedrock and the types of building materials and lack of EQ building codes. The harder bedrock type allows for EQs to be felt over longer distances in the East, while in the West, the softer, sandier ground absorbs the shaking.

The radio here said 1979. Maybe they played with the magnitude numbers to get a different date to make it seem all the more unusual.

The other EQ's that have hit that fault have all been very low. But the last one that was closer to the size that hit this week was in 1884.

The last EQ's on the Ramapo Line were
1884 - 5.2 which was the highest ever recorded on that fault line
2023 - 3.8
1974 - 3.3
1979 - 2.9

A 4.8....how cute. Come out to the Left Coast where we play with 6-7's plus. :popcorn3:

Yes, I'm that shameless.

But you are built for it there, so you can withstand higher quakes. The North East isn't. Much like how we make fun of you in snowstorms. "It's just six inches of snow, muhahaha". Could be 10,000 feet if you dont have snowplows, salt or ability to deal with it.

Same goes for EQs. Your buildings will be just fine with a 6.0, but in NYC, most of them are coming down and with 118 million people densly packed into a city and up and down a coast, that's a lot of death.

This^^^ And it won't be just NYC, it'll also be Boston, Philadelphia, etc. Such a quake will easily impact half of the population of the US.

Just teasing you Bethshaya.....just teasing!

And for those of us that actually live in the snow zones here on the Left Coast a foot or two if snow is no big deal.....but like last year 10-40 PLUS feet of snow IN ONE STORM is a beoatch!! :bhd:

Personally, I think those folks living in Tornado and Hurricane alley are nuts if they're not living in a bunker! I guess it's whatever you're use to.
