CHAT Does anyone have a microwave/convection oven combo?

I was just telling DH yesterday that when the microwave goes I might want to replace it with a microwave/convection oven combo, so I could bake stuff without heating up the whole house in the summer, and it would save energy. Low and behold, my microwave just died without warning!

If you have one, do you like it? What brand? Can you put in as much as you would a microwave with the same interior size? Or is it so small as to not be worth it? Does it get too hot? Do things get crispy as advertised? What do I need to know and what questions do I need to ask?

Thanks everyone!

We have one, it is an over the range Kenmore Elite. When we were redoing our kitchen it was on sale, we've never used the convection function, although I'm not sure if it is because it is the style or because it is convection the wattage seems lower than other microwaves.

The ranges at our old house and new were/are convection ovens and I'm a big fan of them.

I had an old, enormous Toshiba combo unit I got at an estate sale many years ago; probably late 1990s. I had to replace a couple of seals and minor things (door latchesx2) every 5-6 years but it finally cratered around 2013 and, as I was single then, and had a decent microwave, I never replaced it. I've looked at new ones recently but the cavities on the counter top unit are way smaller than my old one and they seem to be a lot more cheaply put together.

My sister did a kitchen remodel and put in a builtin unit which was like a conventional oven in size plus a dual conventional oven stack - a cooking fool that girl. She said after if she'd really known how useful it was she would've done a dual stack of them and passed on the conventional ovens.

Long and short -- I found that combo to be hugely useful and practical but I never baked in it; just never been a baker.
Pot roasts?Hams? Roasted poultry? oh yeah

Same here. I suppose having the option is nice but oh well. I've never used the convection part of the nice samsung we have.

it is great for baking biscuits, cookies, jiffy cornbread, cakes, refrigerated biscuits.

And the air fryer for reheating or cooking fried fish or chicken, french fries, corn dogs, egg rolls, any thing you want crispy on the outside.

I saw that at Walmart, and was curious about it too. I think it was $99. What do you think of it? Oops I looked it up and it said $299.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input. DH thinks its funny I'm asking you all. I told him the reviews on the net are worthless - either paid or part of the company making them, or bad reviews scrubbed. You guys will tell me the good, bad and ugly!

I picked up a Galanz at Wallyworld right before the shutdowns. It was under $200 then. I must admit
I haven't used any of the other functions, but the microwave works great.

Biscuits you say? Off to the Wally site after we eat!

Yes, over the range. Do not buy one from Samsung. Had one lasted less than 6 months. They changed out board and it lasted another month. Refunded since under warranty and got a GE. No problems and it’s over 5 years old.
