…… Do You Know of An Internet Forum or FB Group for folks with knee replacements?

I guess the question is already there in the heading:

Do you know of any internet based groups of patients and/or medical practitioners focused around knee or hip replacements?

I would really like to exchange experiences and insights with other people who have undergone total knee replacement, have been a caretaker for someone, or is a professional that treats them.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and insights.

Well, I got my wonky right knee replaced in October 2016. And, this is a forum…

So…how can I help?

My wife had her knee replaced last November. Ask away but I recommend looking at the actual knee replacement videos on YouTube. They give you a lot of information. The best advice I can give you up front is that you get out of it what you put in it i.e. if your a couch potato and don't put in the exercise (on YouTube) and physical therapy, you won't be happy with the result. My wife and sister-in-law both had knee replacements two years apart. My SIL became Jabba the Hut and my wife put in the work as painful as it was but today my wife is back to normal movement and Jabba is barely able to walk and needs to use a scooter.

Wife had knee replacement. Doc scheduled PT for in home 2 weeks, then in PT office. Wife did several in the office, then took home instructions to finish. She did not use walker, cane or shower chair at all. There was no downtime. Take away is be on your feet and do the PT instruction.

I had both knees done in 2015-16. I did them one at a time. I religiously did pre & post exercises. I did PT at their office. I iced a whole lot with an ice machine. I used a cane for about 2 days. With the second one, I was cleared to drive as soon as 2 weeks. No issues now except for knee sensitivity when kneeling. I have to get up from the floor like an inch worm.

It's been a long time since I've been there. One chooses a screen name, and starts an individual thread as one goes through the steps of before surgery, hospital recovery then the lengthy recovery at home. Lots of suggestions, there were great nurses who gave advice, some permanent stickies. Very helpful.

Hope you are doing better Barry.

I know of no such forum because I had plenty of support from my surgeon's office and recovery went well. I had little choice and was lucky - fitting my knee replacement in between support for my parent's own hip and knee surgeries at the time, plus juggling farm chores and a 40+ hour/week job. I know you had both knees done at once, (which I personally think is insane!) but everyone's situation calls for different and sometimes desperate measures.

One thing to mention - don't remember exactly how far into healing you are - but at 4-6 weeks, it's common to have these weird night knee pains in bed. Haha...you think it's pretty much over, and then these hit to mess with your sleep. They were explained to me as nerves healing, a very common phenom at that stage, and I can attest that, annoying as they are, they DO go away in a couple of weeks.

I had both my knees done 2-3 years ago. The pain in my knees went away. Unfortunately I still can not walk because of my back.

The number one thing to help the success is to do the therapy and then some.

I did at home therapy, graduated to going to a therapy business, and I added water aerobics which I highly recommend.

There are things I can not do or I do not want to do like kneel or get up from the ground but I am glad I did it.

TKR (left) about 6 months ago, I find if I do not move around a lot it gets stiff. The more I exercise the better it feels. Generally, I bike 40 or so miles a week. Did my first larger hike last week on one of my favorite mountains...

DH had hip replacement...refused all the rehab options...he is tough.... just went with it himself..used one cane for short time....took a few pain pills and got up and walked and walked.... lot outside on rough ground...doubled his protein powder before the replacement and kept it elevated for several weeks after...it really helps joints and healing...he didn't try to explain to them....the doc... refused to release him to go back to work....for i forget..six or eight weeks...told he couldn't drive for that long it would.be impossible...he was driving after 2 weeks... they gave him a ton of pain pills....and told him to call for a refill when he ran out...he only used about 25% of the first bottle....no wonder people get addicted....we had to both go to joint camp.. before the operation...it really was more about pain pills and laxatives and how hard it would be after the operation and selling more medical care and rehab..and pain pills....nothing really postive... terrible waste of a day...
After the operation they had him up and they wanted him to walk and do 4 stairs...it is 13 stairs up to the bedrooms..so he did 12 stairs both up and down the first.time....while they told him to stop he kept going...and walked 4 or 5 times farther than they planned..he was fighting for what he knew he needed to be able to do when he got home the next day...he already knew he could walk all over the house and do the stairs before he came home...was it easy no.... but day was better than the one before
We try to keep ...we can do it...instead of the
we can't do it...the medical "professionals" were trying to sell...
It worked for us..
