Crypto is not currently part of our wealth creating machinery. I'm not against it, just at the moment I have far too little trust in it and have much better ways to make hard cash that serves us better. Then again, each to his own.

I don't have any but obviously many people are making big bucks investing in crypto. I wish them the best of luck too.

Thanks for the poll... It Takes a brave individual to attempt this. Been there, done that.
Hope they don't rip your face off.....heh.

PS: I had a Bitcoin, but it fell out of my boat during a storm.

PSS: The very best crypto wallet is made of Stainless Steel..... Hard drives crash, Android wallets are hacked. Steel will survive a near miss meteor strike.
Cryptosteel...the original is great.....now their are many cheap knock offs on Amazon.

I do. For speculation only and I haven’t bought or traded any for a few years....just wanted to learn how it works.

Why trust in something that you can never physically have in your possession. It's 101010's stored in some computer that has no real value outside of those who say it does. Reminds me of the tulpenmanie speculation in 1600'rds Holland. At least after you lost your shirt then, you could take delivery of the bulbs and have a pretty spring garden.

It is just another form of gambling and you don't even get the enjoyment of watching the dice roll or if you loose enough that $5.00 free adult beverage.

IMO crypto is a speculation, not an investment. I do not even trust Uncle Scam to do money right, why would I trust some unkown geeks with no responsibility save their reputation to do it better?

I trust what the founders trusted.

For the 40% who voted yes......

This is a taxable event that the IRS is looking hard at. Be sure to report this on your taxes.

And I expect this is where all of the regulation will be at going forward.

They've already talked good and hard about taxing unrealized capital gains ... yes they have, as crazy as that sounds ... so you wouldn't have to sell an asset like crypto or stocks ... to be forced to pay tax on increased value.

And just to expand and clarify, the founders trusted God, hot lead, cold steel and hard cold cash. I do too.

Digits are for stuff like this.

Agreed.

But be aware, for the last two years the feds have been asking the question if you deal / dabble in Crypto. In another year they will begin sending letters to those who do, but failed to report it.

Granted this only applies if you sell any.

They want the capital gains.

And likely eventually the crypto will be included in the wealth taxes of course.

I am sure you mean Satoshi Nakamoto.....;)

Uncle Scam can create all the digits needed for any harebrained scheme the DEMONcrats want. If they don't need labor and they don't need votes, they don't need taxes either.

I do.

Only hodl one long-term.

However, I'll take a few fiats (like under $40-50) and "play around" in other cryptos just for fun and to force myself to research deeper for super-duper-long-term.

I first caught wind of BTC (bitcoin) when it was sub $10. I thought it was rubbish simply because I didn't understand the crypto space. I completely ignored crypto until 18 months ago, that's when I made my first investment. I've been very happy since then.

Do you have a crypto currency portfolio?

What is this “portfolio” crapola? “Portfolios“ are owned by people with significant wealth. Most here are not that wealthy. Are you asking who here is wealthy enough to have a portfolio?

Incorrect assumption. A portfolio is defined as a collection of assets. I also have a (very small) PM portfolio. Many members here have a large canned goods portfolio. Etc...

Having a portfolio does not mean having significant wealth. For example my crypto portfolio began with $100 investment and 2 kinds of coins. My portfolio now is worth $310 and includes 6 kinds of coins. Not wealthy by any measure!

I am actually quite poor. But I have deposited some profits from my portfolio into my bank account , only about 50 bucks worth but it will pay for some groceries . I plan to hold for as long as I can, and if it all crashes I'm ok with losing that hundred bucks. I viewed it as play money. Mabye it will turn into significant wealth, maybe not.

Thanks everyone for participating in my poll. I saw this poll on another site and the percentages are similar.

Here is a good site for learning crypto terminology if anyone's interested. I have only been doing this for about 18 months and am still learning myself.

Neither here nor there.
No trust in it. Big returns for big risk. Not for me in this stage of my life. Rather put my money into dividend paying stocks.

Now that biden is in office good luck with that one, oh and you may want to read up on unrealized capital gains taxes... that was passed in the new stimulant bill.

I used to sheet on Elon Musk and his car, but he does have some basic things that I support.
He hates short-sellers. Look at his stock and how he fugged them. He destroyed them. So, I give him props for that.
Granted, short-sellers do provide liquidity in a major downturn (by buying back the shorted shares), however, when it's done in certain precious metal stocks OR in the big SLV (etc) space, or in GME, then it can be considered outrageous to the point of being illegal.
The thing with cryptos is the younger crowd saw how Wall Street/polticians fugged them on the GME short-squeeze (Robinhood included) and are pisst that they NOW see that much of the equities game is rigged only for whale hedge funds/investment banks who own the pockets of you-know-who.
With that in mind, the concept of cryptos like bitcoin is to for society to decentralize away from the banks/hedge funds who are messing with the degenerates and the flyovers.
If you all have time on your hands, get away from the news on the tellie, and start educating yourself on cryptos.
It'll only take about 5 days or so.
There are many things out there (in the crypto world), beside bitcoin, that I realize are quite interesting and can be actionable.
The uber-rich have bucks and only get into new "investments" when they become scalable. That's why Tesla/Elon Musk got into bitcoin around these (short-term all-time-highs). Now BNY-Mellon announced this week to become custodian for banks to hold their cryptos. The wave has begin, and it'll be hard to be rolled back, imho.

I’d imagine we seniors will be reluctant to leave currency......it’ll be a disaster when that rug is pulled from under us!

And, those of us who are aware of the Great Reset would be wise to at least get a passing acquaintance with it. Myself included. Investing in something you can’t touch seems scary!

One nice thing about blue chips is if the market crashes and everything goes under your blue chippers will still have worth when the dust settles so to speak.

I would like to apologize to the board for starting this thread, I now realize it might appear to some that my poll was too personal, and I in no way meant to pry into anyone's financial details. Nothing could be further from the truth and the last thing I wanted was to cause any drama. My posting history will bear this out.

I find the subject fascinating and this was my only motivation for starting the poll. Mods please close or delete as you see fit.

Forget about the flammers. If they do not want to participate, fine.. but always bitching bitching bitching.

You did good. I got killed on my first poll... but you tried, you learned.

Hang in there Abby and thanks.

If you do a search here for bitcoin there are already several threads on the topic, and the board is quite divided on the topic. It's sorta like US dollars, you either own some or you don't. You either have an investment portfolio, or you don't. You either hold physical gold and silver or you don't, you have a debit/credit card, or you don't.

Everyone has their reasons as to why they have whatever, or don't. I'm 54, I can see where this is going, with the monetary system, so set up a portfolio knowing that eventually it'd be only digital currencies in use and not necessarily based upon the US dollar. Eventually no one will be able to purchase anything with US dollars.

If you have a 401K you're investing into something you cannot touch, and when you do touch it the gov't taxes it to death.
