A large group of state legislators is now asking Gov. Gavin Newsom to allow theme parks to reopen.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- As Disneyland remains closed during the coronavirus pandemic, Disney announced Tuesday it will lay off about 28,000 employees in its Parks, Experiences and Products division.

About two-thirds of the layoffs are part-time employees.

"Over the past several months, we've been forced to make a number of necessary adjustments to our business, and as difficult as this decision is today, we believe that the steps we are taking will enable us to emerge a more effective and efficient operation when we return to normal," said Josh D'Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

The Anaheim theme park closed in March for the pandemic. At the time, employees were placed on furlough and the company continued paying their benefits. Disney officials have been urging the state to issue guidelines that would allow the park to reopen safely.

Walt Disney World in Florida reopened over the summer.

The layoffs were described as impacting domestic employees. But it was not immediately specified how the job losses would be split up among the Disney Parks, Experiences and Products business unit - which includes Disneyland, Walt Disney World, other parks around the world, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney, Walt Disney Imagineering, consumer products, retail stores, publishing, games and other products.

D'Amaro said part of the reason for the need for layoffs was "exacerbated in California by the State's unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen."

Earlier Tuesday, a group of California state lawmakers urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to issue guidelines that would allow theme parks like Disneyland, as well as Universal Studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain and others, to reopen.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated that Disneyland announced the layoffs. The layoffs impact employees across the Parks, Experiences and Products division.

It's not exactly a secret that Disney has been struggling through the pandemic due to the fact that so much of the company's business requires the use of theme parks and movie theaters. While the division that handles theme parks has now finally seen most of them reopened, those parks are still only seeing, by design, a fraction of normal business, and one major location, Disneyland Resort remains closed, with the exception of Downtown Disney, with no announcement regarding reopening. Now, Disney has announced that due to the financial struggle, the Disney division of, Parks, Experiences, and Products is laying off 28,000 cast members.

In a letter to employees that was shared with CinemaBlend, Chairman Josh D'Amaro did what he could to soften the blow of the layoff that will affect approximately 28,000 cast members, two-thirds of which were part-time. The letter reads in part...

As you can imagine, a decision of this magnitude is not easy. For the last several months, our management team has worked tirelessly to avoid having to separate anyone from the company. We’ve cut expenses, suspended capital projects, furloughed our cast members while still paying benefits, and modified our operations to run as efficiently as possible, however, we simply cannot responsibly stay fully staffed while operating at such limited capacity.

The layoffs are coming at all levels of the company, and so, while 67% of the layoffs may be impacting part-time works, which we can assume means much smaller roles, some salaried roles and executive-level positions are also impacted. Since this division of Disney handles more than just theme parks, but also cruises and other vacation options, the layoffs will certainly be covering more than just the parks, but between the fact that Disneyland is closed and Walt Disney World is working on a fraction of its normal capacity, the theme parks are certainly going to be a large chunk of these layoffs, with the Disney Cruise Line being another likely target as the ships still aren't sailing.

In his statement, Josh D'Amaro specifically cited the layoffs were "exacerbated in California by the State’s unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen." The relationship between the theme park and the state has been heated of late as Disney has repeatedly asked to be allowed to reopen and while the state has continually promised that announcements are coming soon, we're still waiting.

And this might not be the end of the road for layoffs either. The letter to cast members also promises that discussions with the various unions that include Disney cast members will be forthcoming, one assumes Disney will be looking for concessions to help share the financial burden.

Disney's major theme park competition, Universal Studios, has already undergone at least one round of layoffs.

It's terrible to have to cover this sort of thing. Disney cast members are part of the reason that Disney theme parks are so much fun. Many of those that work there do so because Disney magic means just as much to them as it does the guests. At the end of his statement, Josh D'Amaro says that he hopes to be able to provide opportunities in the future for those let go to return. Of course, right now it's anybody's guess when Disney Parks will have recovered enough for something like that to be possible.

Like I predicted back in March, the REAL damage will begin AFTER the election , and in January of 2021.
Brace for it, gang. All of it, the evictions, food stamp and medical cuts, STAGGERGING levels of PERMANENT unemployment, state, federal city and county revenue collspses will ALL, surge early next year. "They" will do whatever it takes to make it to 1-20-21 after that the deluge.

Well if there is something that represents capitalism better then Disney, not sure what that would be. They have certainly caved to the woke mob quite a bit lately, and their handling of the Star Wars franchise was terrible, but to go from a drawing of a mouse to the empire it is, that's an American success story....the left must truly hate it! Disney has weathered many turbulent times...apparently the corona will be too much for them.

Are Disneyland and Disneyworld having problems because of "pandemic" or is it because people are becoming aware of their progressive agendas that promote homosexuality, transgenderism, anti-Christian ideas, globalism, anti-America...on and on. I hope it's that people are waking up.
did you read the articles?

Disneyland/World are the center hubs of surrounding businesses the only exist if Disney is up and running.
(hotels, restaurants, transportation.the list is very long) catering to tourists.
This is a mass extinction of business and crushing to peoples lives and tax revenue for the city

California's Governor has a lot to do with this layoff, imo. Newsom won't allow the Anaheim park to resume operations. The city has lost over $100,000,000.00 in revenue which has resulted in a law suit.

Disneyland is well known for its sleazy connections to child porn among other things. Some Iris Dei involved here for sure. And yes, Disney is like a planet with a bunch of business groups orbiting it. When Disney goes down, it will do so in France, and in Japan, and in Shanghai I believe. Disney also is heavily involved in cruise lines, hotels, destination resorts and the whole shbang of the "hospitality," industry.

LIke a lot of one person companies, Walmart, Hilton, Disney etc once the owner/founder dies, and the parasite younger generation, especially down to the grandson and great grandson level, it all goes downhill fast. Hilton and Marriot Hotels come to mind.
We are looking at the collapse of ENTIRE INDUSTRIES HERE. Cruise line INDUSTRY. Airplane INDUSTRY. HOTEL INDUSTRY. TRAVEL INDUSTRY. THEME PARK INDUSTRY.

It will take a while, but they will mostly go down, as in 25 percent permanent reduction in travel levels,
The travel mindset is gone among the senior citizens who are the bedrock. Why would anybody over 60, take the risk of air, cruise, or vacation travel at ANY POINT in the next 5 years? eh. Take a trip to China are we, Dennis? :D

Disney is the first rock in the avalanche. Oh, I left out movie theater INDUSTRY, well you get the idea.

One final thing here. You can't run a hotel, motel, restaurant, theme park etc at a 75% occupancy rate, when it is more likely to be a 50% occupancy reduction rate. Face it, gang the virus is nothing. Some 500 people died in Oregon, out of 4 MILLION total population from the corona virus. I would thing thousands died from lack of dialysis, or heart attacks or multiple other postphoned medical elective treatments, or got drunk and ran into a tree, or ate their gun, or other preventable deaths. Sheesh, and now they want you to take a flu shot to boot. Devious globalist murderers.

Nope, it is just the pandemic panty wadders. People have known for over a decade, probably close to two, just how progressive and liberal Disney is across the board. If someone didn't know by now then they had their brain turned into the off position and stored in a faraday cage for way too long.

Yep, they're the "soft-woke" type. Not the "in your face woke" type like other businesses. They are trying to kiss every butt out there.
They are marketing geniuses at times - and not so much at other times.
My wife's relatives are waiting for the bad news. One works directly for the mouse, and the other at a restaurant dependent on folks having enough money to cater small events.
I have been wanting to go back. I love Fort Wilderness and Port Orleans Riverside (old Dixie Landing). But, even if there are hardly any lines, the shortened park hours, lack of park hopping and closure of the shows makes it very difficult to justify a visit right now. And that really sucks too - gas at less than $2 a gallon would make it even more affordable to drive the motor home out there (Fort Wilderness!). <-6.5 mpg when towing Jeep, 7 without.

Yes, I did. I'm not sure of your question other than the article is saying it's the "pandemic." As I mentioned, I'm hoping people are waking up.

If that were the case, way too many places would not get enough business...they are everywhere. There would be nowhere to spend money. People makes excuses to have their fun, wanna have their stuff.

I came to the definite conclusion this morning, like many times lately: this country is toast. Everything is way too far gone, on many levels, and there's too many idols, too much debauchery and carousing, and way too much corruption and deception.

I am having a had time with a lot of it, and take it up in prayer.

can't be clearer >>> CA is a DNC run state - Why Disney didn't wait another month for after the election is the real question.

Mostly pandemic, I'm sadly convinced.
That, and their parks are WAY too expensive for what you get. I have been to Disney World once; it was an hour and 45 minutes of standing in line in the hot sun, for an okay but not great 10 minute ride. Whoopie doo.

I went to the one in Florida with the high school marching band one year for spring break. We had a fine old time. Sure, we were marching in Florida sun--which is hot even in April--but still. Lots of great memories out of that one event.
