CLEVELAND — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. DeWine took a test for COVID-19 as part of the standard protocol to greet President Donald Trump on the tarmac at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland.

DeWine’s office said the governor has no symptoms at this time. DeWine said he is returning to Columbus where he and First Lady Fran DeWine, who also has no symptoms, will both be tested.

Dan Tierney, press secretary for DeWine, said it's unknown where or when the governor was exposed to the virus. DeWine has kept a tight circle around him, with most of his staff working remotely via teleconference since the start of the pandemic, Tierney said.

DeWine said he plans to follow all protocols for COVID-19 and quarantine at his home in Cedarville for the next 14 days. The governor said he plans to continue leading the state from his home Cedarville.

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted also took the COVID-19 test Thursday as part of the protocol to greet the president. He has tested negative and is still in Cleveland, according to his office.

President Donald Trump spoke from the tarmac at Burke Lakefront Airport, shortly after landing there in Air Force One, and he spoke of the governor:

"I want to just say that a very good friend of mine just tested positive you know that our great governor, Governor of Ohio DeWine just tested positive just here," Trump said. "And we want to wish him the best. He’ll be fine. I guess he’s going for a secondary test. I just said I look forward to seeing the governor. They said, 'Sir, he just tested positive.' But he’s a great guy, he’s done a fantastic job of you."

Trump is in town Thursday to visit the Whirlpool plant and a fundraiser later in the evening.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced Thursday he has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

DeWine was tested Thursday as part of a standard protocol as he prepared to greet President Donald Trump at the tarmac in at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, according to a news release issued Thursday afternoon by the governor’s office.

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who also was in Cleveland to greet the president, tested negative, according to the governor’s office.

DeWine has no symptoms, and is returning to Columbus where he will be tested again, as will Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine, the governor’s office said. He then will head to his home in Cedarville where he plans to self-quarantine for 14 days.

DeWine is 73, which places him a higher-risk category for coronavirus patients. He also has a history of respiratory issues. He hospitalized for six days in 2000, while a member of a the U.S. Senate, while he was treated for asthma. He’s had the respiratory condition since he was 25 years old, and receives medication through inhalers, the Toledo Blade reported at the time.

DeWine, a Republican, has become nationally prominent for his cautious approach to dealing with the coronavirus, including being an early advocate for the wearing of facial masks. He becomes the second U.S. governor to test positive for COVID-19. Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt tested positive on July 15. He reported to work 12 days later and has declared himself recovered, according to the Tulsa World.

DeWine may make himself available later today for a press briefing, according to Dan Tierney, a governor’s office spokesman. The logistics are still being discussed, but could involve the governor calling in from a remote location to reporters in a separate location.

“I know everyone has lots and lots of follow up questions,” Tierney said. “I don’t know if that will be possible today. We are going to try to work on that, and we will certainly advise if we can make that happen.”

Officials in the governor’s office said it’s unlikely that many other staffers will have to quarantine as a result of the governor’s positive test. DeWine heads to Columbus twice a week for his coronavirus briefings, but generally works from his home in Cedarville. The only other state officials he likely would come in close contact with include Husted, his security detail and staffers who help with the briefings.

“We do an awful lot of work via technology,” Tierney said. “The vast majority if not all governor’s staff work remotely.”

The White House issued a statement responding to the news of DeWine’s positive test.

“The President wishes Gov. DeWine a speedy and full recovery and commends the job he’s doing for the great state of Ohio,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said.

Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican, said he and his wife Jane are hopeful the governor “will continue to have no symptoms and send our best wishes for a speedy recovery.”

“I spoke with him yesterday about the ongoing COVID-19 response at the federal and state level and I’m certain he’ll continue to lead a strong and safe reopening of Ohio while following the proper protocols and quarantining at home in Cedarville,” Portman said. “I hope everyone will support his recovery by continuing to do their part to slow the spread by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.”

The Ohio Democratic Party is “saddened” to hear of the test result, party Chairman David Pepper said in a statement.

”We know how hard he’s been working to keep Ohioans safe, and this is just one more reminder that this virus can impact everyone,” Pepper said. “As fellow Ohioans, we stand with and support our governor and his family at this time.”

A more sensitive coronavirus test has determined that Gov. Mike DeWine does not have COVID-19, his office announced Thursday night. A rapid-test before DeWine was scheduled to greet President Donald Trump determined he was positive for the virus. A second test administered later in Columbus produced a different result.

“The PCR tests for the Governor, First Lady, and staff were run two times. They came back negative the first time and came back negative when they were run on a second diagnostic platform,” DeWine’s office said.

“We feel confident in the results from (Ohio State University) Wexner Medical Center. This is the same PCR test that has been used over 1.6 million times in Ohio by hospitals and labs all over the state,” his office said.

DeWine and his wife plan to have another PCR — polymerise chain reaction — test on Saturday to confirm.

“The PCR test looks for the specific RNA for the SARS CoV-2 — in other words, the genetic material specific for the virus that causes COVID-19. This test is known to be extremely sensitive, as well as specific, for the virus,” the governor’s office news release said.

DeWine received an antigen test in Cleveland.

“These tests represent an exciting new technology to reduce the cost and improve the turnaround time for COVID-19 testing, but they are quite new, and we do not have much experience with them here in Ohio. We will be working with the manufacturer to have a better understanding of how the discrepancy between these two tests could have occurred,” his office said.

Good. Now he has proof that these test results are bogus and he has no excuse to continue holding schools, businesses and the economy hostage.

well, not QUITE.

He has had the irregularity and variableness of them shown. What he has YET to see first hand would be 1 +, 2 -, 2 more +.
Doesn't mean carp for what he's doing with the State.

Hope you don't mind that I changed it. No disrespect intended toward you. Only DeWine

The only part that bothers me is the negative results came from the Wexner Center. Wexner is/was a friend of Epstein and the owner of The Limited Brands (Limited, Victoria's Secret, etc...).
Could they be purposely now be showing a negative test for DeWine when in reality he actually has it ? With the intent to let him get sick, or worse ?

If the rapid test is good enough for him to be in close proximity to the prez, it should be good enough for me to be able to visit my dad in a memory care facility. No?

And adjoining states just purchased $1.5 million of these same rapid tests of which Ohio gets 500,000 of them. So more unreliable tests with more false positive results that'll keep us all locked down for no reason. F'em.
