Democrats criticize Romney for 'unemployed' joke
– 9 mins ago

TAMPA, Fla. – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a group of out-of-work Floridians Thursday that "I'm also unemployed," quickly drawing criticism from Democrats who said it showed the former Massachusetts governor and multimillionaire was out of touch.

Romney made the comment while criticizing President Barack Obama's economic plan to a small group of business owners and unemployed workers at a Tampa coffee shop. The former equity firm CEO told the group that he did have his eye on one particular job, however.

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, issued a statement saying Romney's comments were "inappropriate and insensitive to the millions of Americans looking for work."

"This comment shows that Mitt Romney — a man who wants for nothing and whose only occupation for more than four years has been to run for president — is incredibly out of touch with what's going on in our country and around the dinner tables of those who are out of work," she said. "Being unemployed, Mr. Romney, is not a joke."

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom called the Democratic criticism an "absurd distortion" of statement that what was clearly made in jest.

"The person who doesn't take the employment crisis seriously is President Obama, who has discontinued his daily economic briefing," Fehrnstrom said. "If elected, Mitt Romney will reinstate the daily economic briefing and make job creation his number one priority."

Florida's April unemployment rate was 10.8 percent, higher than the national rate of 9 percent.

Thought that Jonathan Tobin had a nice take on the Mitt Romney unemployed comment.

"No Sympathy For “Unemployed” Millionaires"

I know party chairs are supposed to blast everything said by the other side but does Wasserman Schultz really think this sort of self-righteousness impresses anyone? After all, it’s not as if “employed” politicians, such as the congresswoman herself, are considered by most Americans to have an honest job.

What’s more, wasn’t she the one who said yesterday that the Democrats “owned the economy?” But I guess that just means they own the parts that are not a colossal failure, as opposed to the unemployment rate that is currently higher than the one that Barack Obama inherited in January 2009. If anything, Wasserman Schultz would do better to refrain from any comments herself that might draw attention to this issue.

As for Romney, as much as his weak joke won’t hurt him with Republicans, if he really is the GOP frontrunner, he’s going to have to remember that every word that comes out of his mouth is fodder for his critics as well as those of his party. Moreover as an extremely wealthy man whose fortune was made at Bain Capital in part by downsizing faltering companies and outsourcing their jobs, he is particularly vulnerable to swipes about his financial career, a point that Wasserman Schultz’s over-the-top harrumphing about his joke entirely missed. That speaks volumes not only about Romney’s need to be more careful but the DNC chair’s ineptitude.

Where's the icon that breathes fire and has smoke coming out of it's ears?

<insert THAT icon here>

But I had already made up my mind long ago because of mandated health insurance, that if Romney gets the nominee, I'll vote third party - or Mickey Mouse, whichever is the more viable option.
