DANGER? NOAA believes Solar Storm will hit earth today or tomorrow!

Screenshot-2023-08-04-091604.png

A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) — an explosion on the Sun that is bigger than the Earth itself — is heading our way and will hit us today or tomorrow.

CMEs are full of scary cosmic goodies: electromagnetic radiation and ultraviolet that will cook the planets without an atmosphere. A million tons of charged particles every second.
The Earth’s magnetic field will offer partial protection but enough will get through to seriously disrupt radio and anything electrical — including airplane navigation systems.

The outer layer of the sun near its surface is like a pot of boiling water, with bubbles of hot, electrified gas—electrons and protons in a fourth state of matter known as plasma—circulating up from the interior and bursting out into space. The steady stream of particles blowing away from the sun is known as the solar wind.

Moving at 800,000 to 5 million miles per hour, the solar wind carries a million tons of matter into space every second (that’s the mass of Utah’s Great Salt Lake) and reaches well beyond the solar system’s planets.

For those poor souls with a carbon phobia, here’s something real to worry about.

Space Weather Update / Minor (S1) Radiation Storm
August 5, 2023 @ 11:50 UTC (UPDATED)

A minor (G1) geomagnetic storm persists following a brief period of Strong (G3) storming very early this morning. This was a result of a CME shock passage containing a long period where the Bz/IMF component was tipped south. A gradual return to quieter levels is expected over the next 24 hours.

In other news, a minor (S1) radiation storm is in progress following a filament eruption beginning at at 06:00 UTC (Aug 5) which in turn led to a long duration M1 solar flare around AR 3386. So far it appears that the bulk of plasma is heading to the west and away from Earth.

UPDATE: With coronagraph imagery updated, it appears that a glancing blow to Earth's geomagnetic field will be possible by August 8th. Perhaps another round of at least minor (G1) geomagnetic storming can be expected.

CME Impact / Moderate Geomagnetic Storm
August 5, 2023 @ 00:10 UTC (UPDATED)

An interplanetary shock was just detected by both the DSCOVR and ACE spacecrafts. This is likely related to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that left the Sun on August 2nd. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field shifted sharply south and this triggered a Moderate (G2) geomagnetic storm watch by the NOAA/SWPC alert system. Aurora watchers at higher latitudes should be alert.

UPDATE: The moderate (G2) geomagnetic storm threshold was reached at 04:20 UTC (Aug 5). The Bz component of the IMF remains pointed south and this could prolong the storm.

SUMMARY: Geomagnetic Sudden Impulse
Observed: 2023 Aug 05 0253 UTC
Deviation: 22 nT
Station: CNB

ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 6
Threshold Reached: 2023 Aug 05 0420 UTC
Synoptic Period: 0300-0600 UTC
Active Warning: Yes
NOAA Scale: G2 - Moderate

And here I sit, all content and cool in the middle of Oklahoma.

Don't even think our AC has ran for much over a few minutes ever hour. The high was supposed to be over 103 with a feel like temperature of over 110f.

Mid 80s this afternoon when the sun broke threw. Rain and a northern wind. It was/is great to be alive!

Thank you Lord!

We have a wildfire appx 3 miles as the crow flies from us, and we're uphill from the fire. It's steep and rugged terrain. They've been hitting it hard with planes and choppers. Several VERY suspicious fires started in the last couple of days, including the one near to us. Scary!

ETA: Rain is supposed to move in this evening. I pray it does!!

Actually, we have had several CME'S over the past couple months. Not much more than some radio interference.

If you're in to using apps, put Space Weather Live on your phone. You get solar flare notifications. Don't need to worry much until you see an X5 ish or higher. Which I've never seen.

Auroras were photographed as far south as Arizona on Aug. 5th

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Last night, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field, sparking a brief but strong geomagnetic storm. Auroras were photographed in the United States as far south as Arizona. Another CME is coming and could deliver a similar blow on Aug. 8th. Photos and forecasts @ Spaceweather.com.

The xtra water in the upper atmosphere from the Tonga eruption is compounding things.

Define……”things”…….

:cmpcf:
extra energy in upper atmosphere plus water creates sources of cloud nucleation more clouds cooler temps daytime more likey to create precipitation
plus side clouds help keep
heat in at night so
tossup on long term
mainly more clouds/rain
