It was absolutely done too late. And Chinese parents straight up laughed at the Double Reduction policy instated in 2021. Good grief… their young adults are “lying flat”…. Unlike Americans who are “quiet quitting” because they don’t want to work, Chinese have the exact opposite problem, but both responses are similar. “Do nothing.”
But China largely avoided the high COVID death waves the rest of the word had by draconian lockdowns. Japan did also and now both countries are paying the price. All they accomplished was postponing the inevitable. At our peak, the US had over 5,000 COVID deaths per day, so 9,000 deaths in a country with nearly 5 times our population is not extreme. Just like other countries, the virus will soon infect basically everyone in China and herd immunity will kick in.
If you feel manipulated, think about how manipulated and controlled the Chinese people feel. I kept telling my friend in Shanghai what was happening during the protests (trying not to get censored and banned off Wechat.) She kept telling me there was no way it was happening. It won't work this time. Biden can do all he wants on the federal pieces. The state pieces are more apt to say piss off and go see if your wee wee can touch your cloaca and if you can you know what to do.
