covering bare places in yard

I have two pups who share my bed and board. They have a doggie door and can go in and out as needed into a fenced in backyard. Trouble is, there are large areas of places where the grass has died or almost died leaving behind areas of dirt which is mud in the mornings, nights, and after rain!! What is the best solution for handling the bare areas for tthis fall and the approaching winter...straw over the bare spots, or are there any other possible solutions other than straw?? Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated!!

I would try planting some rye grass in it for the winter. That should keep it from getting to natsy.

It does look awful, but even more important than that is the problem of my fur kids tracking in mud. Hope I can get something done about it. Thanks, PilotFighter for the tip about the rye grass. I've heard the tip to plant that in your garden in the fall and then turn it into the soil in the spring when you plow your garden, so I guess it grows more easily in the fall than regular grass seend would. It just might work on the bare spots! I need something that will grow fast here--CODE GREEN!!! hehee

We solved that problem in our yard, by killing the rest of the grass around the dead areas, and laying little brick paths, and areas for the dogs to run. Really came out looking nice. After wipping the floor 4 times one day, we decided we had to do something.

Lot of stuff could work, pavers, flat bricks, neighbors old driveway (designed like a little country path), about anything that would lay flat. Fall clearance at the lumber yards now, so maybe they'd have some pavers on sale.
