Country living

My youngest son moved to the big city last year because jobs here are zilch but he's threatening to move back. He's 20 and has been staying here quite often as of lately. Looking for a job here isn't good but he's determined to land something. Yesterday he said to me, "Mom, I'm used to the city with the traffic and noise and lights everywhere and when I come out here, I pull in the driveway and see flowers everywhere, I hear birds singing and butterflies flying by. This place is like living in a fairy tale." ;) Maybe he is finally seeing how hard I work to make it this way for all of us. Homesteading, country living, gardening, it's all work and the reward is exactly what he said to me. I tried to take a few pictures yesterday and I'll post them below. I love fairy tales. :)

We've had the same thing happen with one of our older daughters. Her exact words were, "I can't wait to get away from this crumby farm, these stinking pigs and those screaming goats"

She just turned 21 and her and her new hubby are now living at the bottom of our path on an acre of land they bought from us in a little used mobile home that's even smaller and older than the one that she "just couldn't wait to move out of".

Hubby's Duroc gilt had her first litter of pigs this weekend, and DD has already been up here looking at them asking which one they could have to raise up to put in the freeezer.

Funny how things work out isn't it Mijuco. ;) Reminds me of the saying "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" The best thing for the kids is to get out and look around alittle bit, then they realize how good they had it at home.

Thank you both Briches and Suzy! I love this time of year! I dug up some garlic today and saved a few seeds of various plants for our fall seed swap that I hope will come to fruit. Take care!

Vicki, I just discovered this thread.

What a sweet story, and I love your pictures--especially your herb garden!!!

Mijuco, my little nephew was eating breakfast one morning and casually asked his mom, "Is this Hong Kong Fooey?" That was one of their hogs they had slaughtered.

It is so nice when kids know where food comes from instead of thinking it grows at supermarkets!

Tadpole, lol, Hong Kong Fooey? Good name for a hog I guess. :) It is nice when they know where food comes from. Now if I could only get them to help me gather it! ;)

Thank you Booger! It is so much work! I was gone for three days and between that and the rain, the weeds are going crazy here. I have two sons but getting them to help with anything but mowing and weed wacking is impossible so that leaves me. I also own my own business and work at that 30 hours a week or more so as you can see, I'm a workaholic. Getting ready to go pull weeds now! Yuk!! ;)
