Conservative Radio Host Larry Elder to Challenge Gov. Gavin Newsom in California Recall

Conservative radio host and author Larry Elder is joining the race to replace incumbent California governor Gavin Newsom (D), who faces a recall election on September 14, according to a report Monday evening by the Associated Press.

Elder, a nationwide figure in the conservative movement, nicknamed “The Sage of South Central,” will join a growing field of Republicans who see Newsom’s recent governing struggles as a sign that the state needs new leadership.

The AP reported:
Conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder entered California’s Sept. 14 recall election on Monday, bringing a well-known voice on the political right to a muddled Republican field trying to oust first-term Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Elder said he decided to enter his first campaign after witnessing California’s out-of-control homeless crisis, spiking crime rates, looming water and power shortages, and whipsaw coronavirus lockdowns.

Elder’s entry into the race immediately reorders a large GOP field that includes former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer; businessman John Cox, who was defeated by Newsom in 2018; state Assemblyman Kevin Kiley; reality TV personality and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner; and former U.S. Rep. Doug Ose. He also brings more celebrity sparkle to a race that has lacked a clear front-runner.

In a recall election, voters will be asked two questions: First, should Newsom be removed? And then, who should replace him? Voters will choose from a list of registered replacement candidates. However, the second votes only count if a majority votes yes on the first question.
Candidates have until July 16 to file papers to declare their candidacy. With dozens of candidates expected, it’s possible that a winner could top the field with as little as 20% or 30% of the vote. Republicans believe Elder’s presence in the race will help drive up support for the critical first question on the ballot.
The effort to recall Newsom gained momentum this past winter, during severe coronavirus lockdowns and after the governor was seen eating at a restaurant with lobbyists, in violation of his own guidelines for managing the pandemic.

His poll numbers have since rebounded, as the state has opened up. However, recent California wildfires, and shortages of power due to the state’s premature reliance on renewable energy sources, have revived criticism of the governor.

Elder’s announcement came as a judge rejected Newsom’s effort to correct an oversight and list himself as a Democrat on the recall ballot. Politicians typically prefer to be identified by party, and being the only listed Democrat in the race would have been an advantage for Newsom in a state where Democrats enjoy a comfortable lead in voter registration.

Laughing about the fact that Newsom won't be labeled as a Democrat on the ballot.

Maybe one of the good guys has a chance after all.

Judge Rules Larry Elder Will Be on Ballot for California Recall Election

Last week, Salem Radio Host Larry Elder made it official that he was running to challenge Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in the California recall election slated for September 14. Not long after, however, the California Secretary of State said he didn't qualify to be on the ballot. After saying he would sue over "these shenanigans," Elder delivered on that promise and a judge on Wednesday ruled in his favor, Jeremy B. White reported for POLITICO.

As White wrote:
At issue were the tax filings Elder had submitted to California elections officials in his bid to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom. Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s office said the documents Elder shared were improperly redacted. Elder went to court to fight back, and his case landed in front of Sacramento Superior Court Judge Laurie Earl just hours before Weber was set to certify the final list of candidates.
...
While Elder was one of the last Republican contenders to jump into the Newsom recall race, he quickly attracted national attention and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. That strong start demonstrated his preexisting base and wide name recognition, but Elder was at risk of having to refund the money if he was blocked from the ballot.
Not only did Judge Earl rule in Elder's favor, but in doing so he pointed out that Elder shouldn't have needed to provide tax returns at all, since this was a recall election and not a primary election.

White also wrote:
In addition to ruling that Weber must place Elder on recall ballots, Earl also rejected Weber’s conclusion that recall candidates are covered by the 2019 state law compelling gubernatorial candidates in a "direct primary election" to release tax returns.
“I don’t find that Mr. Elder was required to file tax returns at all,” Earl said.
The upcoming recall election is a special contest, not a direct primary. Nevertheless, Weber determined that the law should apply this time because it was intended to allow the public to vet gubernatorial hopefuls. Newsom's campaign team asserted a similar interpretation in May when it gave reporters 90 minutes to review the governor's 2019 tax returns.
"I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Superior Court of California, our friends, volunteers, supporters, and the people of California,” said Elder in a brief statement posted to his campaign website. "We fought the shenanigans of Sacramento’s politicians and we won. If elected governor, I will fight every single day for this state. This is just the beginning."

Elder tweeted extensively about his candidacy and the ruling on Wednesday, which included a link to an Inside California Politics / Emerson College poll showing that Elder leads the pack of candidate support.

Elder enjoys 16 percent of support from respondents, while John Cox, who ran against Newsom in 2018 and former Mayor of San Diego Kevin Faulconer each have 6 percent. More than half, at 53 percent, are undecided.

In total there are 43 recall candidates.

That's great news!

He seems like a really good guy.

Larry Elder is a great American, and I would gladly vote for him,
if I was in California.

However, its California, and even a great American such as Larry Elder,
stands about a snowballs chance in hell, in unseating a POS
demoncrap such as Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has the backing
of millions and millions of illegal Mexicans, and other illegals.

I wish to be wrong in my assessment, however nothing indicates
that California can be taken back from the Marxists,
especially an attempt at the Dominion controlled ballot box.

Please be safe everyone.

Regards to all.

Better than Caitlyn. Listened to an interview with him/her/it and it was pretty wishy-washy. At least with Larry you know exactly where he stands.

Too bad I don't live in CA or I would vote for him. Wish we had someone like him in CO because what we have are POS's. Still can't figure out how Stickypooper got elected since most of us knew he was a crook. And Polis is a whiny wimp (along with the First Gentleman).
