Planting Companion Planting

Like the thread title suggests this thread is all about companion planting. Yes, I know there are books on the topics, but have found that due to living in different parts of the country, terrain, light requirements, etc., that the books aren't always 100% accurate.

I'd like to hear about your successes and failures with companion planting.

These are the two things that I always do, and I'm learning and trying others.

1) I always plant marigolds next to my tomatoes..about 1 marigold to every 4 tomato plants. This is to prevent tomato horn worms. It has worked for the 20 years or so that I've been doing this, as I've never had a tomato worm.

2) I plant Nasturtiums to keep the flea beetles off my plants. The flea beetles eat up the Nasturtiums and leave the rest of my crops alone.

we plant marigolds throughout the garden and also try for nasturtiums. We put plants that like each other together like beans, squash, and corn, peppers and squash are together, and contrary to to what it says tomatoes and peppers do well together for us. Peppers like to hide under okra also. Peppers do not like beans though. We've been doing this for years and it usually works good for us. Oh and sunflowers everywhere!

I have borage and hot peppers together and both are doing great. I’m harvesting jalapeños and have already cut back the borage 3 times.

I am limited on space so I decided to crowd some corn and green beans together. I might add some squash or watermelon or okra later if I can coax any up. Our nights are still a bit brisk.

Same here o; brisk nights... and yet I stuck three tomato plants in the ground this afternoon, I really need to get my seeds started, I’ve just been so damned tired.
