US Energy Department assesses Covid-19 likely resulted from lab leak, furthering US intel divide over virus origin

The US Department of Energy has assessed that the Covid-19 pandemic most likely came from a laboratory leak in China, according to a newly updated classified intelligence report.

Two sources said that the Department of Energy assessed in the intelligence report that it had “low confidence” the Covid-19 virus accidentally escaped from a lab in Wuhan.

Intelligence agencies can make assessments with either low, medium or high confidence. A low confidence assessment generally means that the information obtained is not reliable enough or is too fragmented to make a more definitive analytic judgment or that there is not enough information available to draw a more robust conclusion.

The latest assessment further adds to the divide in the US government over whether the Covid-19 pandemic began in China in 2019 as the result of a lab leak or whether it emerged naturally. The various intelligence agencies have been split on the matter for years. In 2021, the intelligence community declassified a report that showed four agencies in the intelligence community had assessed with low confidence that the virus likely jumped from animals to humans naturally in the wild, while one assessed with moderate confidence that the pandemic was the result of a laboratory accident.

Three other intelligence community elements were unable to coalesce around either explanation without additional information, the report said.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the new assessment from the Department of Energy. A senior US intelligence official told the Journal that the update to the intelligence assessment was conducted in light of new intelligence, further study of academic literature and in consultation with experts outside government.

A Department of Energy spokesperson told CNN in a statement: “The Department of Energy continues to support the thorough, careful, and objective work of our intelligence professionals in investigating the origins of COVID-19, as the President directed.”

The Department of Energy’s Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence is one of 18 government agencies that make up the intelligence community, which are under the umbrella of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs pushed back against the claim when asked about the reported assessment during a regular briefing on Monday.

Spokesperson Mao Ning pointed to the “authoritative and scientific” conclusion reached after a 2021 field mission between Chinese and World Health Organization experts, who determined the lab leak hypothesis was “highly unlikely.” That mission was later criticized for a lack of transparency by Western governments.

“The parties concerned should stop stirring up arguments about laboratory leaks, stop smearing China and stop politicizing the issue of the virus origin,” Mao said.

‘Not a definitive answer’ National security adviser Jake Sullivan said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that the intelligence community remains divided on the matter, while noting that President Joe Biden has put resources into getting to the bottom of the origin question.

“Right now, there is not a definitive answer that has emerged from the intelligence community on this question,” Sullivan told CNN’s Dana Bash. “Some elements of the intelligence community have reached conclusions on one side, some on the other. A number of them have said they just don’t have enough information to be sure.”

Sullivan said Biden had directed the national laboratories, which are part of the Department of Energy, to be brought into the assessment.

In May 2020, researchers at the government-backed Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory issued a classified report that found it was possible that the coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan, which came at a time when that line of inquiry was considered taboo.

The US began exploring the possibility that Covid-19 spread in a laboratory as early as April 2020, though the intelligence community has noted repeatedly that a lack of cooperation from Beijing has made it difficult to get to the bottom of the question.

Republicans react

The latest intelligence assessment was provided to Congress as Republicans on Capitol Hill have been pushing for further investigation into the lab leak theory, while accusing the Biden administration of playing down its possibility.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman Mike McCaul said Sunday he was “pleased” that the Department of Energy “has finally reached the same conclusion that I had already come to.”

“I have requested a full and thorough briefing from the administration on this report and the evidence behind it,” the Texas Republican said in a statement.

McCaul in his statement referred to a 2021 report he had released as ranking member of the Foreign Affairs panel, which “found a preponderance of the evidence proved” that the pandemic originated with a leak from the Wuhan lab.

The chairman called on the Biden administration to publicly concur with that conclusion.

“It is critical the administration also begin to work immediately with our partners and allies around the world to both hold the (Chinese Communist Party) accountable and to put in place updated international regulations to ensure something like this cannot happen again,” McCaul said.

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska on Sunday called for public hearings following the disclosure of the Department of Energy assessment.

“We need to do extensive hearings. I hope our Democratic colleagues in the Congress can support that. I know the Republicans in the House are certainly supportive of that,” the Senate Armed Services Committee member said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“Think about what just happened over the last three years, one of the biggest pandemics in a century. A lot of evidence that it’s coming from the Chinese,” Sullivan said.

A spokesperson for House Oversight Chairman James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, said in a statement that the committee was “reviewing the classified information provided” by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in response to a letter requesting information earlier this month.

One of the sources said that the new assessment from the Department of Energy is similar to information from a House Republican Intelligence Committee report released last year on the origins of the virus.

This story has been updated with additional reaction.

CNN’s Aaron Pellish, Andrew Millman, Zachary Cohen and Sam Fossum contributed to this report.

Yeah, and the MSM this morning is spinning it as it still being a controversial subject because....... que in the peanuts adults speaking.

Surely we can't say Trump was right.

The problem is that while it was a Chinese lab..the gain of research (,illegal btw in the States) was funded by a shell org. with ties to Fauchi (according to Elon Musk). So our own country is complicit.

Raven, how/why they came to issue their classified report in May 2020, I don't know. But the lab is under the Dept. of Energy, so it makes some sense they'd be the ones making the statement. Maybe. I guess. :eye:

General Michael Flynn: This is powerful testimony (long but necessary read)...

Let’s be crystal clear from the very outset by once again kicking dead horses kicked long ago and repeatedly since: any notion that the COVID-19 “pandemic” is something other than a deliberate and intentional construct of enterprise fraud, which was unleashed on America and the rest of the world, is itself a component of enterprise fraud. What makes the analysis at Moonshine different than quite literally anything found anywhere else is that my background is fraud. Since early January 2020, while the rest of the world was talking about a “virus” and a “pandemic,” I mounted the wild bronco of enterprise fraud and began breaking it. For a very long time, I was the only one riding that horse and I remained committed to it for a simple reason – that’s where the evidence led when examined through the pragmatic lens of common sense.

For one thing, I’m still the only person in America who has told you that the first fraudulent impeachment of President Donald J. Trump was the cover mechanism for the installation and unpacking of the enterprise fraud construct of COVID-19. That position was assumed in March 2020 and those timelines braided together like a rope. Tit for tat. Maneuver and counter-maneuver. Look here, fake impeachment, don’t look here, fake pandemic.

Aggravating evidence completed the picture:
1-Nancy Pelosi moving impeachment oversight from its traditional and constitutional jurisdiction in Jerry Nadler’s Judiciary Committee to Adam Schiff’s Intelligence Committee [HPSCI],
2-the predication for the articles of impeachment transitioning from “Russian collusion” to a Trump phone call with Ukraine and
3-Pelosi’s rush to impeach before Christmas only to hit the breaks and refuse to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate trial venue for over a month.

Succinctly, this DOE report is sowing further fraudulent narrative as a cover story and exit strategy...

They sure are beating the drums for war with China, aren't they. First the spy baroons, now this. Almost seems like they've got an inevitable economic collapse to cover up.

Not that I doubt covid came from the US funded lab, just seems strange that they're pushing the story rather than burying it. Once they shift to we have "definitive proof" it came from China look for the party to get started.

In the field of memes take a look at the first post. The confidence of the statement that Covid came from a Lab is low. The WHO confidence of their statement that Covid came from a seafood market is likely. Absolutely no new information and WHO and US Dept of Energy are saying the same thing. One side is saying the coin is heads and the other side is saying the coin is tails. Should we really start digging into who is right?

So far we have learned that people in the United States had started funding research on this manmade virus and getting a lab in Wuhan to do the work and probably given clues by lab workers here in the United States how best to go about it, this much has been proven true.
Now was it leaked by some unknown way or was some low end house keeping worker that was in charge of disposing of dead research animals taking them out of the lab and for extra money selling the animals as meat to people in the city of wuhan?

FBI chief Christopher Wray says China lab leak most likely

Published 3 hours ago
By Max Matza & Nicholas Yong in Washington and Singapore

FBI Director Christopher Wray has said that the bureau believes Covid-19 most likely originated in a Chinese government-controlled lab.

"The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident," he told Fox News.

It is the first public confirmation of the FBI's classified judgement of how the pandemic virus emerged.

Many scientists point out there is no evidence that it leaked from a lab.

And other US government agencies have drawn differing conclusions to the FBI's.

Some of them have said - but with a low level of certainty - that the virus did not start in a lab but instead jumped from animals to humans.

The White House has said there is no consensus across the US government on the origins.

A joint China-World Health Organization (WHO) investigation in 2021 called the lab leak theory "extremely unlikely".

However, the WHO investigation was deeply criticised and its director-general has since called for a new inquiry, saying: "All hypotheses remain open and require further study."

Mr Wray's comments come a day after the US ambassador to China called for the country to "be more honest" about Covid's origins.

In his interview on Tuesday, Mr Wray said China "has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate" efforts to identify the source of the global pandemic.

He said details of the agency's investigation were classified but the FBI had a team of experts focusing on the dangers of biological threats.

In response, Beijing accused Washington of "political manipulation".

"The conclusions they have reached have no credibility to speak of," said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

Some studies suggest the virus made the leap from animals to humans in Wuhan, China, possibly at the city's seafood and wildlife market.

The market is near a world-leading virus laboratory, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which conducted research into coronaviruses.

A few days ago, the US Department of Energy said it had found the virus was most likely the result of a lab leak in Wuhan but could only reach that conclusion with "low confidence".

In response to that, many scientists who have studied the virus said this week that there is no new scientific evidence pointing to a lab leak.

A natural origin is still the more likely theory, said Professor David Robertson, head of viral genomics and bioinformatics at University of Glasgow.

"There's been an accumulation of evidence (what we know about the viruses biology, the close variants circulating in bats and locations of early human cases) that firmly points to a natural origin centred on the Huanan market in Wuhan city," he said.

On Monday, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that US President Joe Biden supports "a whole-of-government effort" to discover how Covid began.

"We're just not there [at consensus] yet," he said. "If we have something that is ready to be briefed to the American people and the Congress, we will do that."

Tensions in bilateral ties between the US and China have spiked in the wake of the recent spy balloon saga.

A bipartisan panel of US lawmakers this week kicked off a series of hearings on the "existential" threat of the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

The first session of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party focused on issues such as human rights and the US economy's dependence on Chinese manufacturing.

I took this to mean that they are confident the virus came from a lab leak but they have low confidence it was accidental. Primarily because it seems that 'most likely' is the opposite of 'low confidence'.

IOW time to beat the chinese war drums.

The malevolent conspiracies we found digging into the origins of COVID we all talked about in early 2020 on the COVID main thread has so far turned out to be mostly true.

The DS was behind the gain of function that led to the lab leak. The totalitarian DNC/DS used their plandemic and BLM/ANTIFA civil war to bog down and remove a sitting president.

Then grifted from vaccines and cranked up the national debt over 10tln and changed voting laws to fortify the 2020 election that would help them regain and hold power.

The CCP was working with them, and why the CCP got snippy with Blinken in Alaska saying now you owe us.
