At least she put her off duty time to good use! One of the first things you learn, got a chance to sleep and your weapon is clean, sleep.

Thank you Mrs Pac.

I can remember where I read it, but I think it was part of the "Mercenaries' Code" or "Soldier's Code" and it went something like this.

Don't run when you can walk.
Don't walk if you can ride.
Take care of your equipment first.
If there is food, you eat.
If there time, you sleep.
There will always be something to complain about and don't take complaints personal.
If you need something done, talk to the Sergeant.

Milo and Toby were discussing Mark's harsh punishment of Jainey at noon meal. Gary got there in time to hear, "Jainey and punishment" and then asked what was going on.

"Dad really came unglued and severely punished Cody and Mara, they married and then were banished to the far cabin for 30 days. He was still mad enough that he relieved Jainey of guard duty and restricted her to quarters for three days. I thought the old man was going to blow a gasket, when he found out. I haven't seen him that angry for years." Toby spooned several mouthfuls of thick potato chowder.

Milo was surreptitiously watching Gary's reaction. Honey had told him about the morning's drama of Jainey talking to Gary and all the big man would do was shake his head no. Nobody knew what had been said, and Milo through deduction, had a pretty good idea. Honey had said Jainey's face was carefully controlled and she was walking stiffly, like she was furious.

Gary was thinking about her quiet question earlier. She hadn't whined or tried to change his mind, beyond a soft please. He actually felt kinda crummy for brushing her off now, and there was no doubt he thought three days was unusually harsh. Gary shrugged, it was no matter to him.

Gary could feel Milo was watching him and carefully kept his own expression blank. What was it with these people, if he wanted a girlfriend, he'd go get his own. The last two he had, didn't last long, they were so-so in the personality department, so he just drifted on.

Milo and Honey discussed the three day suspension; Milo wanted to get her take on the severity.

"I think it was a good thing," Honey had surprised him with her observation. "Jainey's exhausted. She's pulled double shifts four or five weeks in a row. I think Mark just finally realized that fact. Did you?"

"Yeah, sorta. She volunteers for the second shift almost every day."

"She's desperately trying to show she's willing to do anything asked of her, for the privilege of staying here. She literally has no relatives, or any other place to go if she were sent out. Jainey is an over-achiever, and an all around good gal. It was a real blow to her self-esteem when Gary looked at her and then at Mara, and then couldn't take his eyes off Mara. She's sensitive about being a plain woman and ignored."

When Honey put it that way, Milo looked at her and shrugged. "She has to have skills to stay here. We all do. We can't carry freeloaders."

Honey looked at him and nodded. "Don't abuse her good nature. She's untrained, not physically fit, and under a lot of stress. If she were a man, you'd have someone training her in the blink of an eye."

Milo nodded. Honey was right, he needed to talk to dad about a group wide exercise program. In fact he didn't know why it hadn't been done.

Jainey was so drained that she slept for the first twenty four hours and then the night that came next. A quick trip to the bathroom and she went back to lay in the bed, trying to think, and slipped back to sleep. Her reserves were severely depleted. Honey repeatedly looked in on her, and Jainey barely moved positions.

Mark, Clora, Milo and Honey were discussing the problem the morning of the third day. Honey was chiding the men for not paying better attention to the 'troops.'

"That's too overworked," Honey was protesting. "Neither of you would allow a regular soldier to become that exhausted."

Milo pushed the piece of paper into the center of the table. "If you don't mind, Honey and I did a fitness evaluation on everyone here at the retreat. I don't need to say most everyone flunked. Gary and Robert are the only two we have, that are in condition. If we had to make a run for it, we'd all perish; trying to help those that needed assistance." Milo looked around as the stark truth was sinking in.

"We need a plan for when we come under attack again. And we will. When I looked at that group we just put down, all I could think of was; this is a feeler, to see what kind of defenses we have in place." Milo was tapping the paper with his finger. "Right now, our key rifle and defense personal, are some of our worst fitness people. Dad, myself, Toby, Ben Robert and Gary. Lou is as soft as melted butter and Ben can't shoulder a rifle well. That's seven of our fighting force. I didn't count Hank, as I expect him to take a last ditch stand here in the house to protect the women and children. Cody is, well tell me Dad, how do we figure Cody and Mara into this.?"

Mark leaned back in his chair. "They disobeyed orders," he said with great finality, calmly looking at the face of the number one red headed son.

"They did," Milo agreed. "And there has to be punishment for that. But they are two that could help in a fight and if Cody and Mara are killed, Hank and Lemmie won't be of any use to us. That takes four people away from our defense." Against superior odds, we may need those four people."

Mark didn't say anything, and his expression didn't change. There was no way he could rescind the banishment without losing control, and he had no intention of not being in control. He didn't want to tell Milo he had a point, Mark wasn't ready for that.

Milo and Honey talked themselves through the list of people and Mark watched Milo. Milo was a good soldier and a better lawman. In fact, Milo and Honey worked together as he and Clora had done. Finely tuned to the other's thoughts and actions. Milo had the capacity to be a good leader, with Honey to take care of the details.

Mark looked over to see Clora watching him softly. He reached under the table for her hand, the same time, she reached for him.

Gary and Lou came wandering in, looking for coffee.

"Just the man I wanted to see," Milo looked at the hulking big frame of Gary. Except for the dark hair, Gary looked like a through and through Linderman. Tall, thin and well muscled, a late bloomer as were most of them.
Lou looked positively puny next to his brother, and at twenty two, he was far from being grown.

"What are you now Gary, twenty six, twenty seven?" Milo asked.

"Twenty six."

"That must make Robert thirty?"

"I think so. Or twenty eight. Who knows" Gary scratched his chest, and sat down with his cup. "Whatcha got going?"

"An assessment of the physical capabilities of the group. We're up to our asses in snakes if we ever have to leave here." Milo was frank.

Gary nodded. "I noticed that. You thinkin of starting a exercise program?"

Milo nodded, and pushed the paper to Gary. Every member of the retreat was listed with a number from one to ten behind their name. He and Robert were the highest at an eight, on account of their wounds. Gary snickered when he got to Lou's name with a four. He reached over and picked up Lou's arm and felt the muscle. "I think that's pretty optimistic," he jabbed at his younger brother. "He's kinda puny."

Lou bopped Gary in the arm, and it looked like an ant trying to move a bale of hay. Gary turned around and gave him a look that said, 'so?'

Lou picked up his coffee and stared out the window.

Milo re-directed the conversation; "Gary, would you be interested in training a small group at a time. I believe Toby and Lou are the only two men that are healthy right now."

Take care of yourself Pac, it may be hard on us but your health comes first. This is bad news for the clan, only a few in shape and unwounded. Thank you Mrs. Pac.

Pac, I hope you don't have what I had. It was like a super duper cold, almost pneumonia, but not.
It took three weeks to get over it. Took a long time to get my stamina back.

Just rest it out and feel better soon.

"How about you, Toby and Lou, to begin with. Stretches, basic exercises, some jogging and weight lifting?"
Gary looked at Lou and got his nod. Milo blew out his breath and nodded, he could already feel the hurt, and he hadn't even started.

"Toby's the one that will take careful watching. He's a little pudgy from the 'good life' and we don't want to stress his heart, but he's sure gonna live longer if he gets back in shape. I think we should include Robert, he needs to maintain the conditioning that he has." Gary was thinking out loud.

"What about Cody and Mara?" Milo held up his hand to stop Mark's objection. "They're here, we feed them, they use resources and if we sweat them hard, they may not act like minks."

Honey couldn't help but snort with amusement and clapped her hand over her mouth. Clora looked at Milo and said, "that's enough of the graphics, thank you."

Gary and Lou laughed out loud, and Mark was unhappy. "I have a condition for them to be let out. Two hours of hard conditioning every morning and two in the afternoon," Mark decreed, that's as far as he would go.

Milo nodded, that was fair, and they needed members up to fighting speed as quickly as possible. "If your going to have Mara, what about Honey and Jainey. I honestly feel they need to be included. That starts nine of us as a nucleus, for a defense team."

Gary nodded, "but that also makes for a large group. I'm less able to assess individuals fitness in that situtation."

"Let's start," Milo urged, "If some can't take the pace, they can be included in the next conditioning. I want to go on record as being very concerned that our next raid isn't that far off in the future."

"I'd like to include Sherrie," Lou spoke up, and Gary nodded. Lou grinned to himself and Gary elbowed him in the ribs. Everyone else pretended not to notice.

Honey hated to go in and wake Jainey, the woman all warm and tousled, as she stretched. Honey had left the door open, and Gary happened to be exiting Mark's office. He was treated to a eyeful of Miss Jainey, and he ducked and hurried down the hall.

Jainey was totally unaware, but Honey had heard the footsteps and smiled to herself.

yes,
the sweet little germ factories 'shared' with me. I am doing better, but this one's going to last longer than seven days.

I have two bottles of home made elderberry wine left, and they fermented extra stout, while I was busy with other tasks.

They are more like Elderberry cordial or brandy. It doesn't take much to blow your socks off! Makes me feel better,....no matter what ails me. LOL. Pac.

Take care PAC. At 4 weeks I had to go to a regular doctor appt and she chided me for not coming in sooner. Seems I ended up with a sinus infection, elderberry concoction and all. After 4 days I am feeling better already and the cough is getting less and less. Take that as a cautionary tale.

Thanks PAC for sharing this wonderful story with us. Reminds us we need to push on thru the 'colds' and work on getting into/staying in shape. That is my biggest drawback I fear.

Thank you Pac, sounds like the elderberry wine my wife used to make. Two small glasses and all is well!

Thanks Mrs. PAC

Get better soon.

Oh, if you take a pressure cooker (the old kind with a weight on the top) and put a hose on the vent thing the weight goes on and run it under cold water and cook off wine slowly and then condense it you get brandy. Just an interesting FYI, not advocating moonshining. (To small a cooker for large batches really but it does work)

My grandmother made wines in bottles we saved for her and just stretched a balloon over the top to catch the fermentation gases and keep things clean.

Thanks again

Mark asked Cody and Mara to come to the office, and headed down the hall, leaving them no room to object. As they were out of 'jail' so to speak, they went with trepidation, wondering what had happened now.

Mark had them sit down and he eyed them like a stern father. Cody couldn't quite meet Mark's eyes, and Mara sat with downcast face.

"I am disappointed in both of you." Mark scolded. "As adults, I expect you to remember that there are impressionable young children here, watching what you do. When you are out of the cabin, I expect circumspect behavior. We are starting an exercise and would like you to participate. It is not required, it is voluntary, and it is two hours in the morning and another two in the afternoon. I strongly urge your participation."

Mara was the first to agree. "I would like that, I need a way to burn off energy. I'm all in."

Cody was a little slower to agree, but eventually came around.

"It starts in a half hour, see Gary for your instructions. And thank you both for understanding the benefits." Mark ended the meeting and the two miscreants hurried from the room.

Gary had a full room, and it was too crowded to do any calisthenics. That was what he had been afraid of. Right away he divided the group into two. "Men from 8 to 10, women from 10 to noon. Men eat early and start at noon until 2, women from 2 to 4. Prepare to sweat, get dirty and get in shape."

Gary dismissed the women and started in on the men. It was the regular Marine corps set of exercises, he did the work right along with the class. As he suspected Lou and Toby were the softest and started taking breaks as they sweated like never before. Milo did as many as he could, then bent over, caught his breath and went back at it again.

The problem came when Gary started the ladies. Eventually he had to focus on a spot on the far wall, well above their heads. He occasionally watched their forms, to make sure they were doing the exercises correctly, and perhaps looked more critically at Jainey, than the others. She, completely ignored him, working hard at every change of movement he called out. In the back row, she made no effort to call attention to herself.

The main problem was with Mara. Right out in front, she smiled and flirted with her eyes and he tuned her out. She was a married woman now, and he had no intention of upsetting either Mark or Cody.

Honey reported what she had seen to Milo, remarking that Mara might be a bigger problem than she was worth. "Do you want me to have a talk with her?" Honey offered.

"Ya know, I think Ma and Dad should be the ones. This is their place and their rules, and I think it would carry more weight coming from them." Milo was thinking out loud. "There is the parent factor, so maybe they can straighten her out. I'm actually surprised at her actions, considering what Dad said. We've been lucky up to this point, and I'm appreciating Jainey's restrained behavior."

"I'm beginning to think she is a better woman than Gary deserves. There is an edge to him that I find puzzling," Honey replied as she brushed her hair. They were getting ready for bed. One of the rare times Milo didn't have guard duty at night.

"Ohhh," he laid his hurting body down on the bed and tried to relax.

"Who's on duty tonight?" Honey asked, sure she knew who one of them was.

"Jainey and Lou."

"I'm not surprised, she does look better with sleep."

"Dad and I appreciate her willingness, but we are going to have to give everyone a rotation. That means Tricia, Rennie and Tess. That won't be popular, but we all need more sleep." Honey nodded as she worked liniment into Milo's sore muscles. His shot blasted body was in poor shape.

"Are you working and stretching more than you should?" Honey asked as she gently warmed and kneaded the sore ligaments. Milo just groaned and Honey looked at the fine form stretched out on their bed. She turned out the light.

Three weeks of double timing his 'recruits' had Gary in very fine form, and the exercisers in decent shape.

unscientific fermentation

Dosadi,

I have made wine with the balloon, and when I want stronger stuff, I make it in a crock. Very unscientific and subject to working too much, but handy to let ferment when canning is going full steam.

In a 10 gallon crock, I fill it half full of (say elderberries) mash them good with a potato masher, add sugar until the juice tasted slightly sweet (5 lbs. or so) and two heaping teaspoons of wine yeast. Stir together, add 'good' water, not chlorinated or treated, to within 3 or 4 inches of the top, stir well, tie a used and well bleached pillow case over the top and let it ferment.

It will drive you out of the house and draw fruit flies in invasion forces. But when you taste, say after 30 days, it should be losing that 'raw and strong' taste. I have let it go for 60 days or more, and it starts to get syrupy. Even better!http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/images/icons/icon10a.gif

Thank you Mrs. PAC

Both for more story and the info on the elderberry. I'm not a big user like I once was, but knowledge is always valuable to me.

Mark looked at the groaning, exercise sore people at the supper table and smiled. He and Clora, Lemmie and Hank were doing less vigorous exercises, more along the lines of stretching and then testing muscles with a tiny bit more, but everyone was involved, even the children.

The further they got into the conditioning, the harder Gary worked his pupils. No one was immune to his sarcasm and sharp digs. Men and women slowly clawed their way into magnificent shape. Strangely enough the small diseases such as colds and coughs lessened, as fit people had better defenses.

Still, Gary drove them relentlessly for an hour a day. Divided now into small groups according to fitness ability, he bullied, pushed, taunted and roared insults to squeeze the last bit of willpower from everyone of them.

No one was sure what happened, but it was Milo, Honey and Jainey in a class and Jainey had just completed a hundred pushup's after coming off of all night guard duty. Her tired body refused on the ninety-ninth one and she collapsed on the floor.

Gary was yelling at her, Honey was yelling at Gary, Milo was yelling at both of them, and when Jainey regained enough strength, she got up and walked out the door. The other three were so involved they didn't even miss her.

Jainey walked down the hall on trembling legs and collapsed on her bed, face down. It was a repeat of the exhaustion she had felt before, and now there was a added bite to her situtation. Love. Jainey had fallen in love with the one man in the world that hated her without tolerance.

She wasn't thinking about the way he treated her, her body had shut down due to fact there was no cushion of necessary fat around her internal organs. Her body was beginning to feast upon itself for the needed calories she required to function.

This time Jainey slept for three entire days. No one could tell if Gary cared or not, but the way he was pushing the rest of the clan, he was like stepping in a mud puddle and encountering a snapping turtle.

Finally Milo took the young Marine out to the workshop and gave him the talking too that Gary needed.
