Who says nothing interesting ever happens in the world anymore? This week, in a “first of its kind” operation, a brain-dead human subject was implanted with the world’s first gene-edited pig liver transplant, according to SCMP.

In what could be a pioneering move, Chinese scientists have transplanted a gene-edited pig liver into a human, aiming to potentially mark a solution to organ shortages, the report says.

The liver was modified to reduce rejection risks and was implanted into a brain-dead recipient, showing no rejection signs four days post-operation, as per the Air Force Medical University. SCMP writes that this procedure could significantly aid those with end-stage liver disease, possibly revolutionizing liver transplants.

Gene editing advancements in China also promise to enhance efficiency and accessibility in plant modification, reflecting broader strides in medical innovation, the report continues.

SCMP notes that liver diseases annually claim 2 million lives globally, with China alone witnessing up to 500,000 new cases of liver failure yearly. Xenotransplantation, the process of transplanting organs across species, could be a hopeful strategy, especially for liver ailments, given the complexity and scarcity of human livers for transplantation.

While pig organs have been previously used in research, the liver’s complexity means there needs to be innovative surgical approaches, such as auxiliary transplants, to ensure effective integration and function within the body, according to SCMP.

This development signals a critical step toward more sustainable organ transplant solutions, addressing both the technical challenges and the dire need for viable organs.

The Air Force Medical University commented: “From this perspective, xenogenic liver transplantation has great clinical application value.”

Saved, to glorify God.
My friend was declared brain dead.
In a coma for 4 months.
She later said she heard everything said around her.
But couldn't respond.
They wanted to treat her as a dead person and
harvest her organs!
We ( her husband and I) defied them.
BTW- NEVER declare yourself an organ donor!
They want your organs MORE than they want you to live!
At 4 months of coma i took the heavy chocolate frosting
Off the cupcake i brought to celebrate her son's
4 month birthday, and stuffed the frosting into her mouth
around all the tubes coming the out of her mouth.
SHE LOVED CHOCOLATE, and I was gonna give her
a taste of chocolate before they killed her.
Well, SHE WOKE UP THREE HOURS LATER!
She not only woke, she was standing up beside
her bed, with all the tubes still in her, AND THE GUARD RAILS STILL UP ON HER BED!!!! According to all the nurses! I don't know HOW (and the nurses didnt know how she did that) she was 330 pounds when she went into the hospital to have her baby. I talked with a coma specialist afterwards and we both concluded that the sudden rise in blood sugar may have enabled her body to snap out of the coma.
That happened in Tacoma WA about 33 years ago.

Back in the late 80s, there was a South African Doctor who was bringing patients out of their comas by using a sleeping pill.
The sleeping pill turned off the "switch" that was keeping the patients in the coma.
He sort of dropped the radar quickly.
Just coincidentally, this was about the time that the legal definition of "death" changed, in order to accommodate the "organ donation" movement.

Too extraordinary to ignore: Sleeping pills awaken comatose patients

Posted by: tedconfjune May 31, 2006 at 1:55 pm EDT

In one of the most bizarre science breakthroughs in recent memory, British and South African doctors have reported three cases of semi-comatose patients who were roused to a waking, interactive state by … a sleeping pill.

The effect was discovered by accident: Doctors had administered the sleeping pill, Zolpidem (better known in the US by the brand name Ambien), to calm a vegetative patient who was experiencing restless movements. “Lo and behold, he woke up 15 minutes later,” UK doctor Ralf Clauss told Nature. “The effect is amazing to say the least.”
