Livestock Chickens

My town is debating allowing backyard chickens. I want a few but will be an absolute novice. What advice or books can you recommend for someone just starting out? I am only intersted in eggs and sweet chickens, not in butchering. At least, not right now.

Lilrose mentioned what I came on to say. Very helpful info on that site. I also joined a couple of chicken groups on fb and have learned a lot.
We got five pullets at the end of May. Bought them at almost laying age (they started a week after we got them). So good!

A really good resource is backyardchickens.com. It is a forum dedicated to raising chickens. If I have a question or sick chick it is the first place I go for info. There is a lot of knowledge there.
Thank you for this. I want to read up so as soon as the rule in favor of chickens, I will be ready!

Just watch out on Backyard Chickens... a lot of their stuff tends to be a bit... overboard?! Chickens don't need coats, air conditioners, or ridiculous levels of pampering. Sure, if you have the time, money and need for a pet, you can indulge yourself, but they do just fine with clean water, a good layer mash on demand, and plenty of space to be chickens.

They do need adequate protection from predators... for most people, neighborhood dogs and cats are the biggest danger. And selecting a breed which is appropriate for your climate (a smaller, light colored type if you live where it's hot, heavier types with rose combs if frostbite could be a problem) will prevent a lot of problems.

Above all, enjoy them! They can be endlessly amusing, and fresh eggs are wonderful!

I separate my flocks. Five or six, seem to get along well, and can stay confined in a completely covered predator-proofed area. Mine pens are about 8 X 16. Some have free range in the larger yard during the day, some don't. A good roo is wonderful....they are RARE. Get rid of the roo if he is mean to the hens, or taking feathers off their backs.
